wow some blaze me -and the kids watched it from the window at 11pm, could see the smoke and flames and I live around 7 miles away! Dramatic fire , I did keep windows closed though as the black plume was headed over my way!

This is not the first time this scrapyard have had a massive fire. What action will SEPA take? Surely a 5 or 6 figure fine or jail term MUST be the case. This scrap yard MUST be licensed and must have in place a code of practice to prevent such fires. It will be very interesting to see if SEPA have any clout or what action they will take. They had 2 inspectors on site last night. Can they force the closure of this site? Who is liable for costs etc?
The smoke caused a lot of disruption due to the wind changing direction.

Sure it's not just me, but this fire is just too much of a coincidence, based on the far more difficult economic times.
Whatever the cause of this blaze, it's clear as folk have said the management and control of such a potentially dangerous environment should be far more closely monitored.
Also, interesting that:
firefighters were initially hampered by a lack of pressure in the water supply, but water from a tributary of the nearby River Clyde was pumped to help out.
as the BBC had just days before had a false fire alarm leading to it's evacuation just minutes before it was due to go on air with its evening broadcast of Reporting Scotland, and I thought it was conveniently placed, next to the River Clyde, should there ever be a fire there......
and, woe and behold, theres a fire on the banks of the Clyde, in Renfrew just days later, with the Clyde being used as an additional water supply to fight the flames.

I agree with the sentiments above. Rather conveniently timed. Interesting how the spokesperson for the scrappy declined to comment. Hmmmmm. But yeah, that place is on fire so often its unreal. [bold]Shut It Down! Before someone gets killed![/bold]

Tut Tut!
There is a ship at anchor off Greenock that was due in at the basin to collect a load of scrap metal that would've been bound for Spain. The yard is losing money due to this fire. Why would they want to destroy a load of scrap metal that was hours away from being sold? Too many sweetie wives on here.
The yard has had 2 major fire in it's history. The current blaze being one of them and the other being two years ago. The vast majority of fires that come from that area are burning in the neighbouring Breakers yard. NOT the scrap yard.
Before I'm accused of being involved in the Co. involved, I'm not. I only photograph the upriver docklands.
What I will say is that The Upper Clyde needs a dedicated river based fire crew. With so many new developments spring up along the riverside the potential need is there.

My point is that SEPA controls permits for these places. So legislation is in place. So it will be interesting to see how it is enforced.I recall a very big blaze with tyres near here some years ago. The blaze seemed to oil, plastic and rubber as far as I could see from the Yoker side.

I live just the other side of the water to where this scrapyard is. Its not the first time Ive been concerned. My partner phoned SEPA last nite. The Fire Brigade were not informed until 14:30(according to the papers). It started way before then. I hope something is done about the potential dangers this scrapyard poses. My main concern is what effects this smoke has on our air quality ? If it was an "accident" someone is still at fault and its serious. The company may be losing money but it works both ways. 80 firefighters are at the scene for a start.

I agree with most of the comments regarding the fire at renfrew, however why did it get so big so quickly and why does the operators not have substantial onsite equipment to contain and put out such fires.maybe its time for these places to have this as a condition of their planning or licence to operate conditions.
Why did the firemaster not call in the fire tugs quicker to fight the blaze from the river?and why do we not have river firefighting vessel considering the amount of developments being built on the riverside, perhaps that plan is too simple for the so called experts to contmplate after all they are so involved with high tech theories and all the fancy training that we pay for surely they can
put a fire out. and I suppose its one way of getting rid the non ferrous waste that needs to be separated before they yard can load the ship that is waiting for its cargo, mmm, maybe I should patent that idea.
