THE biggest curry house in Glasgow is set to open on the site of a derelict hotel.

Entrepreneur Archie Sharif will launch the mammoth Indian restaurant as part of a £9million redevelopment of the landmark Kelvin Park Lorne Hotel.

The 39-year-old, who also owns Modern Indian on West Regent Street, bought the hotel in March last year and planned to finish the development by the end of 2007.

But he decided to turn the A-listed building into a four-star boutique hotel while pursuing his dream of building the city's - and possibly even Scotland's - biggest Indian restaurant.

The curry house, which opens in October, brings to an end years of uncertainty over the future of the hotel which closed seven years ago.

Archie said: "Part of the hold up of the development was getting the interior design right.

"Originally the plan was to refurbish the hotel to a three-star standard but we decided instead to aim for four stars, which has led to the delay."

"The restaurant is in the extension to the building and we have spent a fortune on buying reclaimed stone that will carry the look of the original building.

"I think we are building Scotland's biggest curry house.

"We will have up to 300 covers in a completely new restaurant."

Originally plans were lodged by an English firm to turn the site into a hostel for asylum seekers.

But permission for a change of use was turned down after protests from residents.

Then in 2003 developers wanted to turn the site into flats but that plan was also dropped and the hotel has lain empty for years. The Lorne revamp will be a boost for the Kelvingrove part of Sauchiehall Street - an area caught between the city centre and the West End.

In recent months a number of new venues have opened nearby including fish restaurant Blas and Big Slope, formerly Cafe Organic.

Archie said: "We will be good for the area and the location is a benefit.

"Once open we will be able to compete with the city centre and West End hotels."

Martin Lawrence, formerly of the Dakota, One Devonshire Gardens and Malmaison, has been appointed manager.

Archie has also hired outfitters New Concept, which won the contract for the Dome in London, to help design the bars and restaurant. Oran Mor designer Surface will create the bedrooms.

I thought we were trying to improve the health of Glaswegians by changing eating habits! This wont help.

Curry's aren't necessarily bad for you - plenty of healthy ones out there. It's the burger bars/chippies that are giving Glaswegians the opportunity to eat themselves into an early grave. Ultimately, eating habits are down to the individual, and if they're not willing to change, then an extra curry house can hardly be blamed.

I'd rather this than a derelict building!

Doh - I meant "curries", not the electrical goods store

Well done to this guy for developing a site that has been a real eyesore for years. I wish him and his business great success.

Its good to see the man brightem up a once elegant part of town (50 years ago this area was on a par with parts of Central London), in the last 20 years it looked as if it was on course to be transformed into a ghetto. Still plenty more work to be done in this part of Sauchiehall St and neighbouring Argyle St.

Investment, jobs, an attraction, the obsoletion of an eyesore. Well done!

C'mon Jim, we're all responsible for what we choose to eat. A curry now and again isn't so bad, so don't go all 'Giilian McKeith' on us. Put your wee tupperware box away man!

And, this sounds like a bold plan - well done Mr Sharif. The Missing City's right, this is a really good wee corner of Glasgow which has been run down for years (although it already has picked up since I lived there at the start of the decade). Investment is a good thing surely.

Finally!! How long was that hotel lying derelict and empty ?

It's just a wonder that some wee scumbags didn't come along and torch the building before now.

Glad to see this enterprise is finally getting off the ground, lets hope it brings yet more diversity and culture to the West End.

I was worried for a time that it might turn into a rates free giant charity shop - LOL ;-)

Good news but I'm sure Mother India next door and Sibbo's over the road won't be too happy. I wouldn't want one empty shopfront to be replaced by two.

There's also the empty facade next to the new Tesco that was destined to be an Indian Restaurant as well. No idea what that will become now.

The less derelict shopfronts in this great wee area the better.

Guess it's survival of the fittest, but Mother India's certainly seen a few other Indian restaurants in the area come and go before...

I'm in the mood for a curry now.

Hey dont diss a good curry!! This is good. At least a former hotel that was a waste is now being turned into something all Glaswegians can benfit from. As far as i am concerned there arv not enough curry restaurants in Glasgow. The more the better for me!!

There's still time for it to burn down...

Well it seems to be a favourite of certain patrons that their restaurants mysteriously burn to the ground, and then up pops a lovely block of flats!

Bring back the Creme de la Creme.....!

Yes a curry is ok every now and then .But we all know Glaswegians habits .it will be every week or few days .So its not a good thing then is it.

This was a pretty decent hotel - which I stayed in december 2003, obviously a research error on this article saying been closed for 7 years!!! not closed that long, but long enough for it to become an eyesore!
