Ann Lilburn: stabbed 86 times
Ann Lilburn: stabbed 86 times

A FORMER accountant who stabbed his wife 86 times in a frenzied knife attack was today found guilty of murder.

David Lilburn was fuelled by rage after 43-year-old Ann vowed to leave him over his affair with another woman.

A 999 call heard hysterical Ann scream: "I'm dead" as her husband repeatedly plunged kitchen knives into her.

Scheming Lilburn tried to con a jury at the High Court in Glasgow claiming he was mentally unwell and a "black shadow" had ordered him to stab Ann.

But they dismissed his lies and found him guilty of murdering his wife at their Paisley home in the early hours last July 29.

Lilburn, 45, will be sentenced to life when he returns to the dock in September and told the minimum term he must serve.

The court had heard Lilburn embarked on an affair with 43-year-old divorcee Lynn McGuire after answering her advert in a lonely hearts column.

He had earlier paid £2000 to a private detective to find a former female schoolmate, but she turned him down.

Lilburn told the court his womanising led to the "complete destruction" of his loyal wife and his kids lost respect for him.

But he still wined and dined McGuire, treating her to five-star trips and meals in restaurants.

Ann, a Catholic, eventually consulted lawyers about a divorce.

Lilburn was later sent a letter demanding he leave the family home in Arniston Way.

This left him fuming - and eventually led to the brutal attack on his wife.

Lilburn had gone to sleep in the marital bed, despite it being agreed he use a spare room. He had earlier been out celebrating his birthday with Ms McGuire.

The court heard his wife came home and a row erupted. Raging Lilburn repeatedly banged her head against a door frame and floor.

Lilburn stormed downstairs and grabbed four knives from the kitchen before returning to stab his wife 86 times.

The jury were played the 999 call in which Ann pleads for Lilburn to stop. She also screams to the operator: "I'm dead".

Moans and groans are interrupted by Lilburn striking her with the blades.

After the attack, callous Lilburn stepped over his wife's blood soaked body and went for a shower.

Lilburn told police he had no memory of any attack, but during the trial he admitted killing his wife and that a mysterious "black shadow" had telepathically told him to.

His QC Andrew Lamb asked the jury to convict him of the lesser charge of culpable homicide on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

Nice to see a murderer actually convicted of murder, instead of culpable homicide or manslaughter.

I find it bizarre that Lawyers have little morals when it comes to their clients behaviour that led them to trial in the first place.

In this case, having being a blatant womaniser, he is seen as not such a bad person by his lawyer even though he stabbed his wife by repeatedly plunging kitchen knives into her.

Sometimes the legal profession is seen a dirty trade, thankfully common sense does prevail, though not very often.

God bless Ann. We miss you and will continue to do so. He's been dealt with justly and will rot where he belongs. I couldn't have hoped for a more appropriate outcome and thank the jury for the outcome.

Poor woman. Why couldn't he have done the decent thing and given her a divorce? Once again, life should mean life. Someone with a temper like this, could kill again.

Why is this evil man being allowed to live?
A life for a life, he forfieted his life when he took anothers.
I don't want to hear any humane or liberalist crap about us being as bad as him. I am disgusted the tax I pay is being used to house, feed and clothe this monster. Bring back hanging and rid us of these evil beasts once and for all.

Tax payers are paying to keep him alive but with any luck he will be used as a human punch bag where he is going. I bet this poor soul of a woman fought for years to keep her marriage alive, fought in vain to make him love her but in the end she paid with her life. I hope this be a lesson to hundreds of other woman trying to hold on to such a loser, GET OUT WITH YOUR LIFE, they are not worth it, ROT IN HELL ANIMAL, I hope his fellow inmates give him all the S E X he doesnt want!

Our criminal justice system is a sham. There is no justice in Scotland. Instead we have lawyers and judges who like to dress up in ridiculous fancy dress garments and reckon they know best.

Thank-you all for comments. Like myself you have all been disgusted at the murder of Ann. Ann was a lovely lady, devoted to her children, even her husband and her friends and family. You have all read about the court case, and yet only a 10th of what that man did to her over the years was used in this court case.

In memory of Ann and women like her, why not make a donation to your Local Women's Aid so that perhaps other woman won't suffer the way that she did.

It would seem Ann being a catholic felt she had no other option but to live with this brute despite what he was putting her through. Its poignant that her religion merited a mention.Religion plays such a big part in peoples lives that they go through this for years before thinking enough is enough.
I agree wholeheartedly with mrs. doubtfire make a donation in ann's memory because ann is not the first woman trapped like this and she will not be the last.
Rest Peacefully Ann

This case has made me very sad because it reminded me a lot of my own mother - married in her teens to be a good Catholic housewife, then putting up with 30 years of mental and physical abuse because divorce was supposedly an even worse thing than being beaten to a pulp. Unlike Ann she didn't even have a family to call for help - my father forced her to cut off all contact with her family as part of his abuse. It's heartbreaking what some women were raised to consider "normal" in a marriage. Luckily she saw the light and got out, but I have no doubt that if she hadn't, we would have been reading about her in the papers as well.

Shocking crime, not a story I wish to read. The 999 operator who took the call must now knowing the call was not a hoax be very shaken. Best the evil is locked away for good.

Yet again a blatant wife killer pleads some sort of insanity to a court via a lawyer. Leaving his council (eh?) aside, this monster had enough sanity to meet and then wine and dine other women. Only when finally confronted by a loving wife does he see a black shadow!
His council (is this a joke word now?) actually used this nonsensical plea on a known murderer's behalf. So, where does representation of decency end and catering for the baser animals in society take over? I despair when remembering the hosts of 'so-called insane' killers who are being kept, fed and clothed by we the taxpayers and ...worse still...we pay the enormous salaries of the legal councils for these animals.
