Night shelter for homeless is axed

The centre will no longer provide night help, but other services will continue

A NIGHT shelter for Glasgow's homeless has been axed after a funding cut.

The Salvation Army's Laurieston Centre will no longer provide emergency accommodation to people forced to sleep on the streets.

The night service was targeted for closure in April, but Glasgow City Council agreed to give extra cash to keep it open for a further two months.

But the charity was unsuccessful in finding an alternative funding partner to secure the long-term future of the shelter.

Launched in December 2004, the centre's night service was aimed at providing an emergency lifeline for men and women forced to sleep on the streets.

From 10pm every Monday to Friday they could have a hot meal, a shower and fresh clothes.

A council spokesman said the funding cut was linked to a city-wide programme of improvements to homeless services.

Around 80 emergency beds have been put in place to cope with the loss of the service.

The Laurieston, off Oxford Street, also operates a dedicated day service for some of Glasgow's most vulnerable citizens, offering drug and alcohol rehabiliation services. This will remain open.

A Salvation Army spokeswoman said: "The service was initially set up as an emergency service and the funding was guaranteed for only three years.

"All seven night staff have been redeployed to other services."

In the past four years 700 hostel beds at crumbling hostels have been decommissioned by the council as part of a review of services.

However, 619 new supported accommodation beds and 1000 temporary furnished flats have been created.

The council says the changes have led to a 22% reduction in homelessness applications across four years and a reduction from 30% to 10% for the number of repeat homelessness applications.

The Salvation Army also runs a city re-settlement centre for the homeless, with 42 self-contained flats in the South Side.

Yet another sad example of how our decrepit New Labour city council is happy to let vital services for vulnerable people go to the wall, while it continues to waste hundreds of millions of taxpayers' money on useless, vanity projects like the 2014 Diddy Games.

It's just sad that our councillors & politicians can't, won't or don't speak out when serious and terrible issues like this arise.

Of course hostels should not be a long term solution to homelessness. (nor B & B's!)

But, if Councillors, politicians, and those who turn their noses up at the homeless - and say they have theirselves to blame swapped places with them, and lived in these hostels they might even develop some empathy, or understanding.

Having volunteered at one of the numerous soup kitchens run around the city by The Simon Community, an excellent charity & organisation for the homeless, I can say that homelessness is being swept under the carpet far too often.

I just hope that it will not be ignored even further due to the bad press it gives the council & politicians alike to the rest of the country, Europe & the World in the run up to the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

There are situations where I do not condone begging, or aggressive behaviour, and the Big Issue should be seen as an alternative.
But, even the management of the paper / magazine must surely admit it is being hi-jacked, and has far too many pitches in some parts of Glasgow. With some who cannot speak enough English, and some who have no proper pitches, or I.D. badges.

These kind of issues cannot be ignored, put to one side, or denied as being the problem it is today for any longer.

The homeless people of Glasgow may have drug or alcohol problems, but if that is their only vice to survive the depressing life on the streets alot due to genuine reasons, then who can blame them.

It's just proof again that there is also the serious lack of provision of placements in drying out centres, A.A. Councilling, and other forms of being given methadone with support from the medical proffession.

People should be ashamed that we still have this kind of problem in the UK. As it will not go away until we face up to it, place funding where it is needed, and stop treating the homeless as second class citizens.

Many have had very interesting lives, and stories to tell, and need a listening ear even more so.

Perhaps instead of supporting charities which are so well advertised, and the much bigger world relief organisations - we shoud give a couple of pounds to homeless charities & organisations within our own cities.

After all " Charity begins at home. "

Fully agree, the labour party priorities are all wrong, morally, and common sensically.
Just how they continue to justify where our tax paying money goes, and why is a mystery.

quater finals of the archery

I can't wait!

Sweep it under the carpet and, to our public officials, it doesn't exist. They think putting some poor sod who has, for decades, had a drink or drug problem or mental health issues in a house, on their own, in the community is helping them. Well, it isn't. They need help, not ignored. But why would they want to spend money helping people when they can build a running track.

The expression "Out of sight, out of mind!" seems appropriate.

Homeless, less fortunate, and all awkward situations are being swept under the political carpet.

Meanwhile, our politicians & councillors alike are the ones who are out of mind. Out of touch with the electorate, public, and the reality of this situation....

While they continue to line their pockets, others have to struggle to find their next meal, bed - place of safety and avoid the hassle and potential of being mugged, or potentially murdered themselves by those even more drugged up, or fuelled by the demon drink.
( & that doesn't have to include the homeless.)

I suggest the homeless should be placed in the East end of Glasgow where Ms Curran will' fight tooth and nail' to ensure they stay there, well away from her south side abode

"There but for the Grace of God go I.." about being homeless. I really feel bad that government "world-wide" has no more compunction than to not care that people have to sleep in snow, midges, mosquitos, rain, what have you than in a nice warm bed after a good shower bath, while they are willing to line their pockets with tons of money.
