Fire hoses snake up past the ninth floor as firefighters battle to get water to the blazing flat

DOZENS of lives were put at risk by a massive blaze after vandals targeted vital water supplies.

Firefighters were delayed in tackling the inferno on the 10th floor of a Glasgow tower block after several dry-riser outlets were vandalised.

Today their actions in Pinkston Drive, Sighthill, were condemned by fire chiefs.

Almost 50 emergency calls were made by frantic residents after fire broke out shortly before 9pm last night.

It was initially feared people were trapped inside the building and at the height of the blaze around 25 firefighters were at the scene.

When crews arrived they tried to establish a link at the dry-riser on the eighth floor but it had been damaged.

They found a similar situation on the seventh and ninth floors and were forced to run a hose from the fourth floor.

A Strathclyde Fire & Rescue spokesman said: "These actions caused the delay in firefighting which could have had serious consequences, leaving either our crews or residents injured."

A probe is being carried out today at the flat where the blaze broke out. It's been cordoned off and a police officer is standing guard.

One resident said: "I live three floors above the fire and was worried for myself and my two children.

"Our flat is very smoky this morning and we are trying to keep the windows open to get rid of the smell.

"We weren't evacuated last night but it is frightening to hear this morning that the dry-risers had been vandalised."

One man, who lives on the 19th floor of a neighbouring block, said: "It is a real problem if there is a fire and you live on the floors above it.

"What on earth would you do? It's not as if you could exactly just jump out."

The fire broke out just yards from blocks of flats which were recently demolished and near a popular social club which was recently destroyed by fire.

Make all the anti-social neighbours live together in high-rises instead of spreading them among the law-abiding majority. Then, if their behaviour causes a tragedy, it'll be no great loss.

Surely the incompetent housing association, decrepit city Council or the SFR have a responsibility between them to ensure that the dry-riser units are secure BEFORE they are needed for life-saving use.

If they can afford to employ a spokesman always to blame someone else about everything that goes wrong with SFR, then surely they could employ a safety officer to check the dry-risers in the city's dwindling stock of high rises?

Nice one! This is the ideal solution so long as they take their Social Workers with them.

Sydney give it a rest. It's as certain as death and taxes that for every hundred people, you'll get a few who make it their sole purpose in their life to make the lives of others just that bit harder. The problem's neither with the GCC nor the SFR, it's with the mentality of these thugs who don't give a second thought about what they're actually doing.

You should write to the SNP Government, Sydney, since it's their decision to allocate most of this to the Games (instead of education, etc.).

Once they've paid to educate Sydney, there will be very little left for anything else.....

how is it that we can only comment on some stories

Yes, how is it we can only have a say on some of the stories, and what, pray tell, is a high riser?? Thanks

Thank you celtic4,- I'm sitting reading this stuff, feeling pretty stupid, as everyone else seems to know. I presume it's some sort of tap for a fire hose?

A dry riser is an input point on the outside of the building that allows the firemen to connect their water hose to. Inside the building, there are dry riser outlets (on each floor) which the firemen connect their hose to and the water comes through.
The dry-riser is a dry pipe system within the building that allows water in and flows through the system to be accessed on each floor.

I thought that was the plan...

Sydney SFR employs thousands of safety officers, every firefighter is one and can expect to carry out regular multi-storey inspections on tower blocks like Pinkston. When defects are found, whether it be to the dry/wet risers, self closers, hydrants etc, a list is forwarded to the relevant housing association. That the housing association drags it heels in repairing these faults can hardly be blamed on SFR.

the only way to ensure they are in 100% working order 100% of the time is to have a 24 hour guard on each one

there's a job for you syd, to get you off the sick

A few owner occupiers enjoy living in tower blocks ,and decent council tenants, most with concierge and not any vandalism , its not all anti social scum , and anyway, a human life is still a human life.

A lot of folk are horrible antisocial neighbours and live in close proximity when in a tower. I feel sorry for the decent civilised ones who mind their own business and are out working and deserve to live in quiet homes with un-vandalised communal areas/lifts/dry risers.

the council can only act on tip-offs, and maybe folk are scared to 'grass' so everyone reaidng this should report any dodgy things, if all that is true then it is a police matter as well.

The problem in tower blocks was/is the same as in any other community. Resources.
I lived a Manchester tower block for many years and the accomodation was excellent.
When we first moved in each of the three blocks had a live in caretaker, a community room and laundrette. Over a couple of years however this was changed. First the caretakers were reduced to one for all three blocks and the laundrettes were closed. Next the community rooms were closed and finally the last live in caretaker was paid off. With each of these reductions in services came an increase in vandalism and a loss of the sense of community. Like myself a lot of the origonal tenents became desperate to leave and the downward spiral began.
Similar problems existed across the country but at least one developer reversed that trend in London by modernising the flats and providing amenities. A successful move that ensured those flats were highly sought after.
Investment in building these communities would have been the key to high rise living but it wasnt to be and the opportunity has been lost.

I think bill emerson's point is half right. People make a community not caretakers who do a good job, the people have to get together and fight for their community

Any mental enough to vandalise this type of equipment needs a good kick up the arse!!!!

i would put a bet on that the vandals who tampered with the water supply are familiar with the vandalizing of the fire hydrants which has been reported recently, there should be a reward from the police if the culprits are pointed out, although some kids would try to do damage you will normally find it is somebodys big brother and the wee ones are the look out, and the parents are neighbours who live in the area,... parents and neighbours help the area and phone the athorities , even if you send a card with the person responsible......thi
s comes under the heading of attempted murder...no matter what people think.
