VIDEO EXCLUSIVE: Headcams for Subway cops in bid to beat yobs

by Marianne Taylor

GLASGOW'S Subway police have unveiled their latest weapon in the war against yobs - head-mounted cameras.

The hi-tech kits, which will be used for the first time in Scotland today, allow British Transport Police to record anti-social behaviour on trains and monitor crowds at big events such as football matches and concerts.

Two officers will wear the special "Veecams" tonight as fans travel to and from Ibrox for Rangers' second round Champions League qualifier against Lithuanian side Kaunas.

The £1200 hands-free camera can film continuously for up to eight hours. It can be positioned on the head or body and has a microphone.

High-quality footage is easily downloaded onto computers and DVDs.

Because the cameras are tamper-proof, bosses say any evidence collected by them will be fully admissible in court.

They have already been used successfully by British Transport Police on the London Underground and by other forces in England and Wales.

It took the Subway network's two dedicated cops, PCs Jack Mitchell and John McCrone - affectionately known by Subway staff as Jack and Victor after the Still Game TV characters - just two days to learn how to use their latest pieces of kit.

The pair have been working as neighbourhood officers on the network for 18 months.

PC Mitchell said: "These cameras aren't for everyday use, but at big events such as tonight's football match, where 20% of the fans will use the Subway, they will be invaluable.

"The majority travel to and from Ibrox safely and sensibly. However, there's a minority who want to cause trouble.

"We're determined to stamp it out and these cameras will be another tool that will enable us to do that."

The cameras will be on trial over the next two months. If successful, they are likely to be rolled out to other officers based at Central and Queen Street stations, and could be used at other big events such as concerts at Hampden and next year's Open golf tournament at Turnberry in Ayrshire.

Chief Inspector Alex McGuire, of British Transport Police, said: "Headcams are already used extensively by our officers on the London Underground and have proved invaluable in helping reassure staff and passengers."

Donnie MacLeod, head of security at Subway operator SPT, said: "We're delighted to support this initiative."

Like the expensive, ubiquitous and intrusive CCTV, these cameras will ultimately get in the way of police doing their job effectively and will prove to be simply another costly media stunt trying to deflect attention from the fact that crime rates continue to soar in Glasgow.

So we now have a situation where perfectly innocent law abiding citizens going about their business will have their movements monitored not only by CCTV but also these robotic roaming cameras. The images?Well they will downloaded and put on to a database where they can be digitally enhanced, altered et al.
What happened to police evidence where the testimony of relible competent eye witnesses was all that was required in court?

So, there's CCTV in the streets around the stations, in the stations, on the platform, in the trains, in the streets around the stadium and in the stadium itself. How in the name of @rse are two more wee cameras going to make a difference? Ther's just this ineffectual illusion of action and assurance, but no-one from BTP is telling us how its officers will take preventative action to identify and detain/arrest any troublemakers.

everybody is sick of crime, and the alternitive to fight crime is put these jokers on camera, if the public has any other ideas then they should give some output.... big brother has arrived ,its inevitable thanks to the parents who think their cherubs are without fault....sometime the cameras are excellent unpaid babysitters.

The money spent on all the gadgets and gizmos that are issued to police officers would be better spent on providing more police officers. Two British Transport Police Officers to provide a police presence at all the stations and on the trains running on the Glasgow Underground system is a joke. This provides 40 hours policing over a seven day week. Its better than nothing but merely a token gesture for the underground users.

there is new recruits on their way, 112 i think, no doubt the gizmos and gadgets will be put to good use, mean while we also have the riot guys who give wake up calls at 5.30 in the morning to the gangsta wannabes...its called taking back the city, the police are finding the new technology systems in place cut down time wasting paperwork(there is even another gizmo for listening through walls which has been in use for around 25 years, can you believe it....amazing!i guess we have to get used to it after all what is thealter native?

In better ordered days the sign of the cross applied with the hickory stick was sufficient to identify the miscreant as he was assisted to the cells. One assumes that cameras and such trivia add to the perfume and lipstick in the modern police person's shoulder handbag, irrespective of gender. Where have all the'Big Hitlers' of Percy Sillitoe's day gone? Stalwarts like him could tame a whole gang single-handed.

just a word of warning to some of the parents who have their heads in the sand,... if you have just bought your offspings a bike ,have it registered at the police station, the reason is.....some of the drug dealers are supplying bikes for use in the selling of drugs, when the bike is stolen then the 'little helpers' do not inform the police as that way they cannot be implicated in any criminal activity, even if your kids tell you "my pal let me borrow the bike....it aint necessary true, check it out, there is a way to transport the bikes along with the dealers from one area to another its on large vans that can carry about 6 to 8 riders along with bikes, so when your wee souls tell you they were on a bike ride.....check it out!
