Students should feel at home in the east end, they don’t work and laze about all day just like most of the unemployable of the east end.

Where will the funding come from for this proposal? I seem to recall about £35m being spent in the last few years on this University.

I'd have thought the last thing the drug-riddled east end needed was another 'shot in the arm'. And is there any truth to the rumour that the uni will be changing its name to Glasgow Caley Special?

Dumb move....dumb, dumb, dumb!
The Cowcaddens road site is excellent. Right next to the city centre, and with excellent transport links.
A fortune has been spent upgrading the facilities at the City campus. So now they want to tear it all down and start again?

What a preposterous idea! The NEDs will have a field day with the students and a correlation may emerge between GCAL's relocation and its declining student numbers. Once they find out that they are expected to live and study in the east end then if they don't have second thoughts about going to GCAL their parents will surely be concerned about sending their sons and daughters to NEDville central. You cannae walk along Duke Street without being hassled by some wideo tapping you for fags or demanding spare change for their next hit. Haven't those behind the purported GCAL move heard of 'neighbourhood effects'?

The best thing about Caledonian is it's hyper-convenient city centre location.
Moving it out to the East End means that the university will gradually diminish once the Commonwealth Games finish.
Terrible move by the oft-criticised hierarchy of this university.

The management presumably think that they'll be able to make a profit selling their city centre sites. It could be a good idea, if they can make the location work for them (i.e. get students to go there). It would be a good shot in the arm for the East End, and would bring jobs, spending and investment. Bit like the Games but longer-lasting.
On the other hand, it might well cement them as the poor relations of the other two Unis - more like Paisley (sorry West of Scotland) than Glasgow or Strathclyde.

Wonder what it says about the respective readerships?

Ok the east end does have its problems but you certainly cant tar everyone with the same brush saying as unemployed! I’m currently from the east end and I went to uni and I’m now in a very successful job probably better than most of you who have already commented on this article! As for it been drug ridden ok this is correct but then again so is a large part of the west end!! you know where I’m talking about ‘student land’!! I seen and been offered more drugs there in my 4 years at uni (especially Ashton Lane) than I have done in the east end!
As for Sydney’s comment on the diddy uni, unfortunately its people like you who keep this vicious circle going round. A lot of intelligent people from the east end don’t get into these so called elite universities because they don’t go to certain schools therefore having to go else where or these ‘diddy unis’ as were referred to! Before you start on me I was lucky enough to be accepted to Glasgow but then again this is maybe because I am more privileged than most of the people with whom I went to school with. However I turned my back on it and decided to go to Paisley which is considered even more of a ‘diddy’ uni, as they have a better IT department than most other snobby universities in Glasgow!
I do agree that it does not make sense to re-locate after all the work that was done on upgrading the campus. Also i do agree that Dalmarnock is not an ideal place to re-locate due to the fact it has high crimes rates and so on. As for parents being concerned about students studying in the east end! Do people in the east end not go to uni?! This does highlight the point though that a vast majority of people in the east end miss out due to the fact they do not have the same opportunities as people from more affluent areas! This again creates this circle were people in the east end often end up in low skilled and low paid jobs due to the fact they never had the opportunity to become further educated.
What I don’t appreciate though is everyone on here slagging off people from the east end! As for not being able to walk along Duke Street with being asked for change or fags, do you people not walk along byres road? The beggar outside the Hillhead subway alone has asked me for more! Remember everywhere has its problems no matter what side of the city!

This is a good idea, this will encourage the children of the east end that uni is a good place to go. Also being next to the games village will be handy, all those flats - just perfect for the students plus the transport links would be decent at that time too. Its a winner, plus the uni will get mega cash for there existing site.

This explains why every new boxy wee flat next to tescos on dalmarnock road has a sold sign on it! Somebody knew something!! It is a wonderful idea for the south east but im not sure if its good for Glasgow Poly to move from the toon.

Agreed that many, many good people in Glasgow miss out on a place at a 'good' university, but the answer to this is to raise eduction standards across city schools - [bold]NOT[/bold] create a Diddy University to ghettoise working-class students in a university which mass produces mediocrity!

I agree with nicola, I alson live in the east end and have worked for the last 10 years solid since I left school. I think a lot of you need to go to the optition and boon an eye exam as it is clear to me that you all walk about with your eyes shut or you are all completely blind! There are drugs, murders and poverty all over glasgow.. Each are has its own problems. Newton Mearns at the moment has problems with the so called labeling "neds" and "druggies?" so it goes to show you that so called "upper class" place like Newton Mearns isnt as rosie as ity seems.
I think the move would be a great advantage to the east end, it will take the look of the empty land sites that are all over the south east and turn it into a remarkable feature for all. The down turn is tha people from the north or west will have to travel futher to get to the uni each day.
It has the thumbs up for me!

Right okay I can see the need based argument but I am not sure about the longer term benefits. If people have a uni even closer to their doorstep will it make them nore likely to go? Perhaps not and students coming into live it up in a relatively deprived area with better future life chances blowing their loans on booze and partying etc. might be a kick in the teeth rather than a shot in the arm for a lot of seasoned east enders. Has anyone thought about how an influx of students might exacerbate the 'town and gown' scenario?

As an academic brought up in the Saltmarket, I never fail to be irritated by those who mock the achievements of Universities like Glasgow Caledonian. Such small mindedness such as references to 'Diddy University', reveals more about the writer than it does about the University.
While far from convinced about the wisdom of moving to the east end of Glasgow, due consideration must be given to its merits. A city centre site is normally more attractive to students than one stuck out on a city's outsklirts. So let us avoid knee jerk reactions until full and proper research has been carried out, including eliciting staff opinion. Personally, I would stick with the present campus as the east end is so far removed from the areas where students normally reside in the city unless of course the University is planning ot make a bid for the future Commonwealth games village as potential halls of residence .

I suppose we should be used to the ignorance, but it still gets on my nerves.

As for not being able to walk along Duke Street with being asked for change or fags, do you people not walk along byres road? The beggar outside the Hillhead subway alone has asked me for more! Remember everywhere has its problems no matter what side of the city!
Spot on Nicola! We were brought up in the east end of Glasgow from Gallowgate to Dennistoun, and all my family, and my children are all employed, and not druggies. I get so sick of people outside the east end, lumping everyone together.
I suppose we should be used to the ignorance, but it still gets on my nerves.

Does anyone realise just how big the current campus inclusive of the student accomodation is and just how much it's worth. Is it coincidental that the Buchanan Galleries is due for a major overhaul and possible expansion.

Its funny that after being on the site since around 1968, the university (now that Cowcaddens and Townhead have been chewed up to look like a place of non-city centre origin) they have now decided after spending huge amounts of cash, they have an idea now to move to the East End, or as snobs like Wallace Arnold would say (Glasgow East)
They must have plenty of money to waste or spend, dependant upon how you look at it, the site around the uni (which once was the sidings to Buchanan St Railway Station) may actually become the home to millions of yuppie flats, or even better, the Bus Station may be moved so that people who use the bus station in the future may not feel as threatened with an overhead car park, including one next door which is heaving with Sweaty Junkies mad wi the smack with head hanging over stomach and still standing on two feet!
Sydney Meriwether - is he not part of the Family Guy production team?
Stewie? Any leads on that one?

Check out the story about the Lottery Grants, Townhead's due to be tarted up.Could this be to make it more pleasing on the eye to those behind the relocation of the Cally and it's future development plans??????

The Caley is a massive land mass, not forgeting the newly built accomadation blocks on Baird Street. Appears as if some one or whom is covering their back-side. Any move would consume massive amounts of housing & the empty buildings left from the move would be a great benefit to Glasgow shoppers and any-one wishing a mini-city within a single complex.

I think this is a brilliant idea. There's been talk of the need for major investment in the East End for years and the relocation of GCU would certainly bring jobs. This is innovative and the University should be commended for considering it!

It is without question that the East End, having been neglected for so long, requires a huge deal of regeneration. The recent commitment to major investment in this area and the securing of the Commonwealth Games of course are significant contributors to regeneration.
The addition of a university, whether it be GCU, Strathclyde or Glasgow, would be a major step forward in the transformation of the East End.
The positive effects on the area of such a move cannot be under-estimated: educational and leisure facilities, improved transport links, IT infrastructure, restaurants, cafes, cinemas, retail outlets, attraction of business and economy, hotel and conference facilities, cultural centre, healthy construction industry etc. Hence major job creation, opportunity and inspiration for a number of people in the area (in particular, the so-called neds) who may otherwise unfortunately be sucked into a less-than glamorous and often anti-social lifestyle, while attracting a new generation of people to the area whether to live and study, to work, or to visit for a day or night out.
Thereby transforming a once deprived area into a dynamic social and economic hub of which Glasgow can once again be proud.

steak and kidney - your views on glasgow tech, as i knew it, and on life in general are blinkered, elitist, always driven by the same pathetic agenda. get a grip man. you would appear to have gained some knowledge over your years. try to apply some intellect to it. try thinking out of your box for a few secs instead of giving the impression that you are totally oot yer box man. next thing you'll be telling us that strathclyde uni, once the red uni, is and always will be just the royal college or does the word royal excuse this particular ghetto of the working class from your snide comments.

A university in the east end is a great idea.
Locals could attend a degree course on 'Benefits and how to claim them'. I have no doubt many will already have prior knowledge of the course content and should graduate with honours.

I am disgusted at the comments made regarding the East End of the city. Glasgow has many run down areas - not just in the East. The comments made typify the ignorance that the so called "intellectual" people chose to have. Open your eyes & look round about you. The West End is certainly not a million miles away in its appearance to Duke Street. They both could do with a good clean - ([bold]as could some the[/bold] [bold]folks in both areas!![/bold]) & re-generated. In the East heroin is a problem. There is a massive number of professional people hooked on coke throughout the city. (dependant not just recreationally) Drugs are a national problem – not just a problem for the east. On the unemployment matter – how many people are out of work in Drumchapel & Clydebank? Or are these areas too far west for the “intelligent” folks on this thread??

Yes it seems that the East End is getting a pounding even by the drug squad who raided addresses in Calton.
As for the true west enders I don't think that they would agree that Drumchapel or Clydebank are part of the west end proper. So MAXIE they might indeed be too far west and this is reflected in the house prices at least. There are even those who say that if your postcode doesn't start with G12 then you shouldn't class your address as being in the west end!

And MAXIE I think that most folk accept that there are NEDs and bams in the West End, sure we all with you there. I am often approached outside Hillhead underground for spare change but I am not in the business of bank rolling the drug habits or jakey dreams of others. Donating to legitimate charities is much more effective.
The beauty about the West End though is that less NEDs tend to live there but you sure know it when they walk along Byres Road making a scene in front of folk going about their daily business.
A lot of west enders are concerned about the purported Underground extension that will directly link into the east end. It might be good for the GCAL relocation but the social problems will now be able to more easily penetrate into the west end as squads of bams arrive on site to get juiced up. Students get juiced up too and yes they often cause problems but they are less likely to be involved in running battles on the street that featured in the Evening Times just this week.

Several universities have tried this before (notably Oxford Brookes & Heriot Watt) and have generally come to regret it. The idea is sell off the uni's ultra valuable city centre land, use the funds to build a brand new and much bigger out of town campus, leaving them in the end with better facilities and probably some spare cash for future projects. However, inevitably the move results in a drop in student numbers, international students in particular (who many UK uni's are now heavily dependant on for funding), who are less inclined to live and study out in the sticks. Also, transport links are inevitably worse. To get to the new campus location someone on the South side will now have to get off a train at central and either walk up to Queen's street or take the subway up, then get on another train, then walk again. Car use increases, and thus staff demand higher wages to cover their increased transport costs. The end results is usually this drop in students and increase in staff wages wipes out much of the financial benefits and leaves the university worse off than it was before.
Now the East end, while not as bad as some others here have said, it is fair to say that its not exactly the most desirable part of Glasgow for people to live and study. The higher crime levels will mean increased security and insurance costs (relative to a city centre location). Also with the current credit crunch it is doubtful that Caley will get top dollar for their land. And if more staff are forced to commute by car, given recent oil price increases, this could result in a substantial demand for an inflation busting wage increases year on year. And as oil prices continue to increase the student numbers will drop still further (and again international students are the least likely to own cars or even have UK valid driving licences). Given these particular circumstances, I would hope the authorities will see sense and call the whole thing off. If they go ahead with this plan then I do worry about Caley Uni’s future financial survival.

I am absolutely appalled by this plan. As if going to a modern uni doesn't have enough of a stigma now they're gonna stick it in the heart of the East End?!
The fact is, this uni has ploughed MILLIONS into its current campus in a short space of time, often to the disruption of students. I remember sitting exams next to the building site that was the Saltire Centre, it was completely distracting. But we were told it would all be worth it for this flagship building. Designers walked around looking satisfied that Glasgow's premiere modern uni was represented by such a fine design. Well more fool them.
This is such idiotic planning. Caley's selling point is the fact it's right slap bang in the city centre. Travelling in? No prob - bus station terminal literally across the road.
Yet again they are thinking SHORT-TERM. Once the Commonwealth Games pass, and those buildings slowly fall into disrepair and go more unused over the years (you can have a swimming pool or a track on your doorstep, doesn't mean anyone's going to use it), what exactly is that going to do for the prestige of the uni?
I know the uni thinks getting in students from lower income families, and those who are the first in their family to go to uni is their remit, but now they will do that to the [italic]exclusion[/italic] of all others. It could go down a really nasty road, which they are too blinkered to even consider.
I hope that those who make this university their place of employ will object to such an upheaval.

The last people Potty Pamela is going to listen to is the staff who actually make the Uni work. Talk about out of touch with reality. Every student survey that has every been carried out puts the top attraction at Cally as the city center location. Who in their right minds is going to drag themselves out to the outskirts of the city when Strathclyde is sitting there (Even if as a previous post says there is a run down swimming pool and race track there - think ahead these attractions have got to last - how many schools have been burnt down in the east end to date?). Unless of course they cannot get in anywhere else - enough said there. This is all about Dogma and Money and nothing to do with actual university education. If the lefties and politicians want more people from non traditional backgrounds to go to Uni - then improve the schools so they can get the proper qualifications to get in (no dig at teachers just resources). No - that would cost to much, a lot more than beaming in a third rate Uni into the area, making up some dubious courses and press-ganging the local populace on to them at the threat of having their benefits cut. You can see it all now. Lets just imagine what type of courses Potty P might offer the locals to get them out of the poverty trap - Medicine (become a GP 120K) hmm, short of lots of Dentists, what about Architects to design all those great new buildings for the regeneration projects . . etc., well dream on as we all know it will be death of aspirations by multimedia (or some other such crud) with no prospect of a 'decent' job at the end. In the same week as Potty P announces this hair-brain socialist wetdream Aberdeen is announcing a probable break trough in the treatment of a major illness - is this not what Universities are meant to be doing pushing back the frontiers of knowledge and understanding not engaging in social work. And it looks as if there is a conflict of interests rat lurking about this whole scenario with this guy Crawford - someone should take a serious look at all of this before a whole cart load of public money is wasted. Money that could have been used to created appropriate sustainable jobs for the people in the area. What sort of employment is the Uni going to offer the locals exactly! I will let you work out the details of that one. It would be totally obscene to have Potty P and her 200K plus wages lording it over the poor folk of the east-end, at least they would get to see a decent Audi sports car I suppose, give them a boiled sweet and be on your way Potty P.

I believe the new logo for Glasgow Calitoxia University when it moves to the chemical dump that is south-east Glasgow will be a giant skull and crossbones!

OK point taken - a lot lot more to do about money and very little to do with left wing dogma.
