Trains to ‘fly’ flag

by Caroline Wilson

SCOTLAND'S trains are to be given a facelift with the country's national flag.

The rail network is to be rebranded with its first uniform look using saltire livery.

Stations will also be revamped using a dark blue colour scheme and blue signs similar to those at Glasgow Central and Edinburgh Waverley.

Transport Scotland say they want the country's trains to have the same connection as red buses have in London.

The work will be carried out during routine re-painting to avoid extra costs.

The move has led to some accusations that the SNP government is using the rebrand to push the independence message.

However transport chiefs insist the plans were on the table before the party came to power.

They said the rebranding aimed to provide the country's railways with a livery that will not change each time a new company takes over.

Passenger watchdogs said the saltire livery would reduce confusion and save money in the long term.

Robert Samson, the Scotland manager for Passenger Focus, said: "It will help bring uniformity, because there is a mishmash of First ScotRail and Strathclyde Partnership for Transport livery now, and different signs all over the place.

"The new livery gives Scotland's railways a national identity without being Nationalist."

The look is due to be launched next month to mark the 25th anniversary of the ScotRail name being coined by British Rail. The saltire livery, which will also be extended to train interiors, will cover 260 trains across the country.

Gary Brogan, the head of franchise futures of Transport Scotland, said: "We aim to create a brand which is independent of the franchisee."

I love how the money can be found to paint the exterior of the trains but there is no money for a bucket and mop to clean the inside. The rail system in this country is a bl**dy joke and yet yesterday we are told to expect another increase in ticket prices.

How nice will the trains look with a national livery and when the doors open a distinct smell of stale booze and sick.

that's because the crazy situation exists that the outside belongs to the government and the inside belongs to the franchisee!
i suppose it's in keeping with a national identity of the icty streets smelling of stale booze and sick on saturday and sunday mornings!

Quite how anybody can complain about the condition of the trains in Scotland is beyond me. Even the old ones are still smart and pretty clean.
I travelled on some kind of heap from Preston to Liverpool recently and I thought I was in a 3rd world country. It gave the impression it was going fast with the noise it was making, but in actual fact, it couldnt have been more than 35mph. It also smelled like an old paid of football boots.

We've got it good up here and should be grateful!

How secure in its identity can a nation be if it has to drape everything in its national flag and put the name of the country at the end of every government department or inititive? Yes, we live in Scotland, get over it!

The Strathclyde Rail network should be kept seperate. As in Glasgow should have it's own livery.

Integrate Glasgow's buses, trains, (possible) ferries.

Well i'd like to know what SPT think of the plans, given that they already have their own livery independant of the operator (hence why they are not in First Group "barbie" colours).

I personally think the trains should be Caledonian Blue, and why not bring back the depot mascots? So Eastfield-based trains could have the west highland terrier logo, Haymarket could have the castle, Inverness the highland stag, and so on.

It wouldn't matter what SPT thinks, their train powers were changed to transport scotland

Agreed. It's like living in a tartan theme park.

The reason that trains are dirty inside is because the people who use them are animals and make the mess...the suit wearers during rush hour are the worst.

And who cleans up the mess or try to...the ticket examiners.

Clean up after yourselves or are your houses a dump too?

Remember everyone that the trains bring visitors into the city as well as frequent travellers from the leafy renfrewshire suburbs. The smell of urine and litter gives us a taste of what to expect when we arrive and have to do the 'Hope Street Shuffle' avoiding the half-digested kebabs, and dark rivers of urine on every corner. If only we got the conductors to smell of drink, bum fags and to be threatening it might help complete the experience. Any thoughts?

Pity that image accompanying this article shows the old livery of TWO franchises ago, ie National Express and not the current holder, First Scotrail OR EVEN THE ACTUAL PLANNED 'SALTIRE' LIVERY! At least with this new bold, dynamic, imaginative, Scotland-wide livery, Glasgow will get its 'Blue Trains' back (of a kind)! The image (published elsewhere) looks quite striking on the Class 170 Turbostars and we had a hint of what was planned when Transport Scotrail announced & issued an "artist's impressions" re the recently commissioned 38 new Class 380 Desiro trains for Ayrshire & Inverclyde IN SCOTTISH BLUE!!

PS That should have read Transport SCOTLAND!
Same difference. It's all about image and branding AND I'M ALL FOR IT!! "FLY THE FLAG"!

Andrew, Only the small minded would be against.. It seems we have a minority on these topics always against progressive ideas.

Maybe they should get out more and get a bit fresh air.
Why do we have so many sitting at their PC's always complaining.
Maybe some attention could be given to their young. The streets / transport might then be kept clean in the manner of the majority.

Self esteem seems to be lacking with some posters..

Did you actually read the article or did you just stop at the headline. Because if you had read the whole article you would have found this

“The work will be carried out during routine re-painting to avoid extra costs.”

Or are you arguing that the trains should not be maintained?

I am not disagreeing about how dirty the trains get. But how many people who complain about the state of the trains put their feet up on the seats, leave news papers and other rubbish about the train. The cleanliness of the trains will be dictated by how well the travailing public treat them; just now it seems the people think they are mobile bins, so what chance does First Scotrail have

I is sort of comical ...that people are commenting about the smell of booze and vomit ...that has nothing to do with the railroad ..it is a small percentage of the passengers who are to blame .....

I'm all for it. It'll be nice to have dapper wee trains. Perhaps we can have a smiley face and a wee tartan bunnet painted on the front too. Lovely.

Think the RMT might have something to say about the ticket inspectors having to wear kilts though.

So much for integrated transport. I said this when SPT lost its powers over the rail service. They are talking about introducing contactless PAYG like Oyster in London - how the hell can they do that when different people run different parts of the network? And it will only confuse tourists visiting the city. More politicians' ideology interfering with the railways.....what's new!!!

I have just come back from San Francisco where they have a local rail/underground system known as the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit). Clean, bright stations. No ticket offices - all automatic machines. Clean trains - CCTV in every carriage. Direct train from Airport to City Centre. Ban on food and drink on the trains. Safe to travel on trains in a multicultural city. Announcements you can understand. How do visitors to these shores view our transport system?
