When the secondary school is in, these pervos harass the schoolgirls, according to a family member. Good to see somebody campaigning against it.

there needs to be a wake up call somewhere, every homeless unit and B&B catering to the homeless, brings with it anti-social behavior and misery to those living near by.
The correlation between anti-social behavior and these units cannot be ignored any longer as decent law abiding citizens are having their quality of life disrupted and jeopardized by transient nomads, who dont care about themselves, let alone other people.

Eh... which 'correlation' would that be exactly: can you give me the source of the scientific study you allude to... or are you just basing your rant on the usual [bold]ignorance-based prejudice[/bold] (as aptly exhibited by Mr McAveety) which explodes in stories like these?

These men have to go somewhere. Putting them into council housing and leaving them there is not the answer. But the Bellgrove Hotel makes Slatefield a no-go area. It's a disgrace these places exist in 2008. Get it sorted.

Syd, use your eyes. If places like the Bellgrove had decent facilities, social work care available and were not a dumping ground for poor unfortunates then perhaps things would be better. GCC and the Social work services are totally to blame for this fiasco. They leave these people to rot and drink or drug themselves to death. Then, they are admitted to hospital where the NHS has to clean up the Social Work's mess.
I feel sorry for them, but not as sorry as I do for the law abiding people who have to put up with it.

I think Ms Lauder is living in cloud cuckoo land. Gallowgate has [italic]always[/italic] been rough. [bold]Always[/bold]. I would suggest that Ms Lauder had done her homework about the area before moving in. Considering that Glasgow council have already closed two hostels [bold]that were needed[/bold], the senile idea that the Bellgrove hotel should close because : "its not nice" in Ms Lauder's eyes is just selfish and plain daft. Did Ms Lauder not do any research on Gallowgate before deciding to move herself and her kids into the area? No sympathy for her whatsoever. If she doesnt like Gallowgate, i am sure theres more than enough landlords up at Govanhill willing to put her and her kids up in a nice "fragrant" tenement.

[italic]"The voice of Glasgow's silenced majority."[/italic] [/quote] ignorance-based prejudice !! is not something i suffer from. As for the research, well the evening times campaign against the Queenspark hotel is a good place to start..... Although now closed there is a well documented history at Peter McCann House. The Hamish Allen centre is probably the worst offender with serious assaults within the centre running at the rate of a few per month. So the evidence is clear for all to see and is in the public domain.
Having an opinion on something does not make one ignorant nor prejudiced. You of all people should know that as you are not short on coming forward with your own views and opinions !!!!

Hi Sidney,
Unlike others I do agree with you on many occasions.
I disagree on your opinion of the hosting of the Commonwealth Games.. I believe it will take Glasgow another step forward in the regeneration of the East End and Sporting facilities
Keep your comments flowing Sidney. Whether I am in agreement or not you add to good debate .. Some could learn from you.

Maybe it was because the Labour Party at this time was enjoying filling their pockets and blaming the East End misery on the Tories as a diversion away from their corrupt activity over a long period time.
Considering the place had crumbling post-war housing built only 20 years pervious, as well as a school in the same condition, the attitude has changed from being a building that was not bothering anybody to one that is filthy and does not blend with the area.
Of course, CG 2014 has accelerated this and in a short space of time, it seems the East End has become the new West End - still, the place is still awash with the same social problems, only signifcantly worse as a result of the politician's gas!

Yeah the Gallowgate is serious NED country and I know of many people who have bought flats in the area to get on the property ladder. The problem is that the same flats cannot be resold as no one wants to be hassled almost every time they use the street. Even people coming to view flats are getting asked for cash and bothered by jakes and NEDs. It sounds like some of the locals feel that they are prisoners in their own homes. It is just as sickening to hear about a minority wrecking havoc for the majority. The socialist in me would say let's look at how the minority were 'created' in the first place but we already know that welfare cut backs have led to the concentration of a social problem in a particular area. I can understand why folk may not be happy about jakeys cutting about near a school esp. if it is where their own children attend.
Perhaps instead of handing over the next brownfield site to a private developer Glasgow City Council might set it aside for much needed accommodation for the homeless. At least this would start to pave the way for a more sustainable solution instead of adding to Gallowgate's list of already existing social problems. The place is a war zone at night and running battles on the street are not out of the ordinary.

I am glad this homeless refuge is where it is, otherwise we could end up with one in the South Side of he city.
As for people saying they see 'alcoholics congregating in the street everyday, isn't that the norm in the east end. My question is
"How can you tell the homeless from the people who have homes"?

That area has always been a hell hole, nothing to do with the hotel, its the residents - check out the housing round there - the residents cant even look after their bought houses. OK there will be some idiots but as for creating the image that Gallowgate would be lovely if it wasnt for the hostel - gies a break!

My point exaclty Emma, the Gallowgate is NEDville central and closing down the homeless shelter would simlpy move the problem into another area. As for 'The Wise One's' question, are they drawing a crude positive correlation between alcoholics and homelessness? It is probably true to a certain extent but alcoholics can also have homes so I don't see the value in drawing boundaries between the homless and the homed. NEDs by contrast are a different kettle of fish altogether.

Aunt Sally the 5 mile link will now be completed due to the Scottish Government.. We have waited since the 1960's for completion of this link.. If you bother to check the further plans for Glasgow you will find the many building projects that will develop from this road..
Furthermore if completed earlier the cost would have been much lower ..
Nearly 40 years of Labour rule had destroyed many areas in Glasgow.. Councillors, MP's, MSP's with no vision for the future, only their bank balances. I know, as a former Labour organiser in the south.
Seems to me (for a change) joined up building projects for a change rather than individual site planning..
Cheers

I live near by and while I might not pop to the shop next door at night, during the day its fine, it's mainly old boys away in their own world and no trouble. The problem is it attracts all the neds who force the winos to go into the shop next door to get them booze and find sport in physically abusing them.
As to the hostel owners they seem to keep the area clean and every now and then when it gets covered in graffiti they do clean it up.
I think the real problem is having a licensed grocers right next door to a hostel for vulnerable people with alcohol issues. So maybe this type of accommodation doesn't have a place in this day and age for those with genuine dependency issues.
I think the woman should be more concerned about the state of the empty houses and derelict closes in Comelypark Street/Slatefield which are much more of a problem for attracting undesirables.

I think the woman should be more concerned about the state of the empty houses and derelict closes in Comelypark Street/Slatefield which are much more of a problem for attracting undesirables.

victor meldrew, i was pointing out the obvious to the majority of glaswegians in saying Gallowgate is rough. I never said it was a bad place. In fact i wouldnt mind living down the Gallowgate. No pretentions . No arty farty west enders. Just decent people who know what they like. [italic]Its just that they all like drink[/italic] . If the police say the hostel is not causing problems why cant people accept that? And has a final note Gallowgate is [italic]not[/italic] east end. Its a part of the city centre.

Medical help, tutors, and physical training daily.. Of course each depending on the physical state of each person... I am deadly seriously this would include various educational programs. Anyone got a better idea? Cheers

Can they not house Homeless people in old country houses.
It will kill two birds with one stone by doing up rundown mansions and castles in the country and using them as hostels for the homeless. And the countryside will do the people who are addicts good.

Hello - wake up [italic]"angry east end residents"[/italic]
Displacement, or NIMBY'ism is not the solution here.
We're talking about people, not animals.
Yes, they have problems, yes their social skills are needing worked upon.
Those who are complaining should just be glad they are not homeless, on drugs, drink or both.
Clearly as I've said before a task -force( much as I hate these groups) needs to be set up, with the Local Councillors, health board? S.W. Dept? MSP's Community Police, Council reps, and residents.
Simply closing hostels down is not the solution in the short term, however much people dislike the behaviour of these homeless people.
By scattering the homeless residents accross the city, or placing them in yet more B & B's how does that solve the problem ?
By moving them from, or closing the hostel, how does this help the people in it get clean of drink/ drugs, get the help & support they need ?
Clearly the police need to show a higher presence in the area - but repeatedly arresting these guys for anti-social behaviour, breach of the peace, or putting them in prisons doesn't fix their problems.
Hostels are definately not the long term solution to homelessness.
But, until the council and authorities generally cough up the funding for policies to eradicate homelessness from Glasgow then sweeping the problem under the carpet simply sees local residents face having to deal with the problems homelessness brings.

Glasgow City Council, Strathclyde Police, the Scotish Government are failing the needy citizens of Glasgow. Hostels in Glasgow should be for Glasweigans requiring short term shelter, while this screwed up Government finds them a permanent place to stay.
And i am not talking about the Junkies and Booze Bags, these Hostels should be and where intended for needy people in hostile situations like Battered Husbands/Wifes, Sexually Abused Family Members, Vulnerable people of Glasgow.
But NO we throw all the Glasgow Booze Bags and Junkies in them, saying we have housing shortages, while we give all the housing to our adopted Brothers and Sisters from Eastern Europe and Africa, a bunch of NO GOODERS who come to the UK to commit as much skull duggery as they can, bleed the benefits and health care system dry, and when they have all the benefits and housing in place, they go back to the mother land in the safe mind there benefits going into the BANK, and they can rest assured knowing the FLAT we have just given them is safely rented out to other illegal immigrants.
This has to stop now, this Government has to take responsibility for the actions of these people, lets just take a quick look at the RATE of SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASE in the UK, it was not born here, its coming from Africa and Eastern Europe.
Not only are these people draining our economy they are also spreading disease like wildfire, they Rape, Murder, and do what ever they want, as most of them are anonymous.
Glasweigans need to get together and bring back the old phrase "Glasgows Miles Better"
Jesus christ, we are the MURDER CAPITAL of Europe, i think only Moscow has more Murders per head. And if we keep allowing these thugs into the country its all down hill from here.

Having driven past the Bellgrove daily, for many years, I have to say I've never seen any trouble from the residents of the hostel.
The main problem in the area are the children of the local residents, who persistantly throw stones, bricks etc at passing cars, then disappear back towards Comeleypark St. I would say the poor occupants of the Bellgrove suffer way more from this ferile pack, than the locals
do from the homeless!

Why are people complaining - these alcoholics have to drink, urinate, congregate, socialize, swear, drop rubbish and spend their welfare somewhere. Surely its better done just next to their 'home' so at the end of the day they can stagger the few yards home to bed.
Luckily I live miles away and so admit to being a hypocrite unlike many of the numpties above wringing their hands and whining with their left wing, liberal middle class ideas of those poor downtrodden chaps.

Never mind the East End, anybody see the fracas with the drunkard & polis that went on in Partick earlier today ?
Who says the East End is the only place with it's problems.
The druggies, drunks, shop robberies, and fights are increasing in the West End too.
Time for folk to open their eyes and shut their pockets to the crime that is going on around them.

I have to admit that I haven't read all the other comments made about this article. But what I can say -from 25 years of working with homeless people - just remember, there but for the grace. Anyone of the people who call the Bellgrove their home could be you. Won't happen to you!?Really! I have worked with professors, doctors, solicitors, merchant seamen, army personnel, teachers, social workers, bin men, office workers, shop workers, trade union officials - who all said at some point in their lives - Nah, won't ever be like the jakies and junkies that live in homeless hostels. But it happens. So instead of bringing down these people and treating tem like something that should be scraped off your shoe - just remember, it COULD BE YOU or someone you know. Noone knows what is round the corner. My Nan told me to always remember - there but for the grace. THESE PEOPLE could be me, they could be you, they could be someone you know or someone you love. How would you like to be treated or how would you like someone you loveto be treated? At the end of the day, the PEOPLE who live in the Bellgrove are people with problems. Treat them so.

PS to my last comment - the East End of Glasgow does have problems and GCC would be better to spend some of its Commonwealth Games Budget on sorting out the lack of social housing, long term unemployed no-go post code areas and similar long-term social problems - rather than set their sights on "bringing the wealthier punter" into the area once the Games are over. Bring back a socialist conscience rather than the Tory conscience that seems to have inhabited the GCC of late. How
dare they call themsleves Labour.

Sadly, we truely have the best councillors money can buy! Like the majority, they are only out to line their own pockets, and will only do aesthetic improvements in poorer areas, if the wealthier have to travel that route to their destination.

I live on the Gallowgate, and i'm actually a neighbour to the Bellgrove Hotel. It is indeed an eye sore. But the men are generally nice men, they have problems and so do we all, but... that is just life.
I have had more trouble, like the police officer has said in the article that its more from youth activities and gangs. My close door windows have been smashed because youths have been bored, and the children who live above me have been bullied by these youths, no one i know of has been harmed by these men that are in the bellgrove hotel, if anything they give enjoyable banter.
For this lady whom in the article is complaining about the hotel, should travel up 5mins walk behind her to duke street, no need to travel to bridgeton in her car! to get some milk.
I have a 2 year old daughter and i'm more scared of walking past the school with her rather than going to the shop next door.
