City students paying £70 a week as rents soar

by Gordon Thomson

GLASGOW students are paying some of the highest rents in Britain, new research has discovered.

Rent levels are being pushed up by young professionals who can't get a mortgage because of the credit crunch and are renting rather than buying.

A study by the website accommodationforstudents.com found students in Glasgow are paying an average rent of £69.34 a week.

The city comes 14th in a table of Britain's most expensive university towns.

St Andrews University - Prince William was its most famous student - has the dearest accommodation in Scotland at £82 a week, while Edinburgh is one place above Glasgow at £71.06.

Researchers said undergraduates were having to stump up an extra £10 a week more than four years ago.

The option facing parents of buying a flat for their student son or daughter rather than renting is becoming more attractive.

Gurjit Singh, president of the National Union of Students in Scotland, said: "These statistics highlight once again the intense financial pressure students are subject to.

"Our own research tells us that more than a third of students in Scotland have considered dropping out because of financial hardship, and rent is one of the biggest costs faced by students."

London is the most expensive place to study, with an average student rent of £102.65 a week.

C'mon ET, why print this rubbish? These sorts of surveys are purely designed to get publicity for the firms involved and probably have no statistical worth.

I agree with Brad on this. Students get more than enough money off the government and the Student loan company to cover those all important "expenses" like clothes, beer, stationary, beer, DVD;s beer, trainers , rent, , food oh and beer. Students alwyas complain about not having enough money. Well you you know what students? go and get a job and find out what the real world is about.

Once again, Mr Meep and reality aren't exactly on speaking terms.

The clue's in the name Meep: Student Loans Company... Students get loans so they can afford to go to university and then - get this - they pay the loans back . Crazy idea eh?

What elevated moral position is it you hold that you feel you can tell other people what to spend their money on anyway? Can you walk straight with that big chip on your shoulder?

Done it pal. Twice. Two degrees. Then lived off £57 a week fae the 'jobseekers' until I got the job I have now (earning considerably more than £110 per week too, thanks).

Not too sure of the point you're making, or if the comment above is directed at me or not. If you're student then maybe you're too thick to understand that I was defending students' right to do what the hell the want without comment from naysayers and reactionares.

University, though, is a choice. It's lean few years (and also add in the opportunity cost of what a student could have earned in teh four years they chose to spend at university. No-one's forcing anyone to go. It's a choice.

What the muppets don't actually realise is that the country needs students - and graduates. Graduates who are the backbone of the NHS for example, or who are the scientsts and engineers who drive the economy. And there's no point decrying the 'mickey mouse' degrees either. All graduates leave university with a whole range of skills which aren't subject related, for instance in the conceptual and thinking skills - basically the ability to adapt and think more widely. You should try that.

Er, that's wrong. For a start Scottish students don't have to pay up front tuition fees of £3000 plus per year, unlike English students.
