£2.5m boost to get city on its bike

GLASGOW is to receive a £2.5million boost to develop new cycle lanes to the East End.

The cash, which will also be used to improve infrastructure such as pavements and walkways in the city will become part of the legacy left by the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Transport bosses say the investment will make the East End more accessible from the city centre.

The project will involve a major upgrade to cycling and walking corridors along Clyde, London Road and Gallowgate connecting the Dalmarnock/Parkhead Cross area with the Commonwealth Games venue and the city centre.

Additional proposals include a schools' bike loan scheme in seven East End primary schools and a car sharing scheme for motorists in the area.

Glasgow's £2.5m share of an overall £15m pot, shared between seven areas will also be used for community-based bicycle recycling and cycle support schemes.

Barrhead in East Renfrewshire, Kirkintilloch and Lenzie in East Dunbartonshire will get a share of the money on a raft of ideas which include personalised travel planning, more pedestrianised zones, free trial bus and rail passes and better walking and cycling routes.

The plan also includes "park and choose" initiatives, similar to park and ride, but with choices including bus, rail, cycling or car trip-sharing.

Meanwhile, bike rental schemes pioneered in Paris are proposed elsewhere in the country enabling people to pick up a bike at a rail or bus station and use it free for half an hour.

The plan was announced as part of a Scottish Government drive to showcase pollution-busting transport initiatives.

Scottish Transport Minister Stewart Stevenson said: "We need to look at new ways of persuading people out of their cars and onto more sustainable forms of travel such as trains, walking and cycling.

"The proposals from local authorities and regional transport partnerships have been impressive and the seven communities selected now have the chance to improve travel options for thousands of residents."

Why would you think that?

A cycle lane from the city centre all the way to the southside would be greatly appreciated rather than having dicing with death on Kilmarnock Road/ Pollokshaws Road etc

Yes, it's pretty awful. Victoria Road is much better but maybe not exactly where you want to go. There really needs to be a way of getting across the railway land between Pollokshields and Tradeston.

I've always thought a cycle path running alongside the cathcart circle line would be perfect.

Yet another waste of money. They put down bus lanes which are so badly finished every time it rains there are massive puddles everywhere. What a shambles this country is in. There's a cycle lane on Cumbernauld Road. I've actually yet to see a cyclist use it. They seem to prefer the pavement.

I think it's fair to say that a lot of cycle lanes are installed where it's easy to do so, rather than where they're really needed (e.g. Pollokshaws Road/Eglinton Street).

Why bother when most cyclists seem to prefer the pavement?

You mean bike theft?

Why bother when most cyclists seem to prefer the pavement?

Only because most motorists seem to prefer parking on cycle lanes. Current on-road lanes are a bit of a joke, basically just a green stripe that might be clear to use for a couple of hours just before dawn. Some of said stripes are also only about five yards long, which is no use to anyone.

New and upgraded lanes are a great idea - but ideally they should be separate from the roads and patrolled or watched by CCTV to prevent neds using them as a convenient, police-car free place to drink.

Up until a year ago, I cycled regularly along Cumbernauld Road, taking my life in my hands every time. One of the main reasons for stopping was the feeling of terror everytime a double decker or a d**k in a w**k tank revved up behind me because I wasn't going fast enough for them.

Why didn't the council take this opportunity to improve cycle routes throughout the East End - instead of just the bit that the visitors from other countries will see?

Looks like we're going to be hearing of a lot more of these tokenistic schemes that are simply aimed at papering over the cracks.

Cycle lanes in the east end. Give me a break.

They would need to ride tandems... Someone at the front peddling like mad and someone at the back deflecting all the bricks, etc which the yobs would be throwing.

And as for free bike stations, has anyone noticed the weather recently, and they are forecasting it will only get wetter.

How about using the money to provide a free circular bus route around the city centre which would allow people to get where they want and not have to risk pneumonia.

Done much East End cycling? I have, and no bricks, etc have come my way.

Maybe I'm too fast.

I cycle every day in the east end ,going to work and back and it's not yobs that give me aggro it's the car and lorry drivers who see me as an inconvenience even tho' I'm yellow vested and reasonably fast.

I cyle to work most days from the Eastend and I never use the pavement. I think you'll find weelangy the issue goes both ways on the areas at lights set out for cyclist cars rarely obey and through town I dont think I've made it once with out someone careless wondering along the cyle path. Most other cities in Europe are alot more respectful to the cyclist why not so here?

Cost of fuel has seen myself study the practical of a bicycle, banned from driving dies to health issues, a car is no option.

Apears now I can drive a Bicycle fitted with a four stroke engine, or, even a electric one, but they are many choices and much of teh technology on sale is not for the Glasgow hills.

120mpg on 2.5 ltrs of fuel, now it becomes tempting. Certain engine sizes are exempt from the expense of a motor vehicle and with cycle paths a motorized bicyle would be idea.

Seems that now the only issues is the flamability of petrol, out-side cupboard. The noise might be an annyance and one hopes a few communications might move a designer to improve the exhaust pipe.

May be the Scottish Government will allow bicycle lanes to be built next to motorways, now with a motorized bicycle you truly could cut congestion. ©2008 leesome
