POLICE have installed CCTV in a Glasgow community still reeling from a massive street brawl which resulted in the death of a 32-year-old man.
Last month's pitched battle shocked residents of the normally quiet community of Carmyle.
Around 20 men - thought to be rival gang members - clashed in Carmyle Avenue. Some were wielding samurai swords, machetes and baseball bats.
The fight left Charles Bowman, from Cambuslang, dead. A
22-year-old man has appeared in court charged in connection with the death.
Now, in a bid to reassure worried residents, police have joined forces with Glasgow Community and Safety Services to put up a CCTV camera at the scene.
The camera will supplement public space cameras already available in the area.
Police say the new camera allows them to monitor activity in the area and to capture footage of any disturbances.
Superintendent Michelle Martin, of the Shettleston, Baillieston and Greater Easterhouse sub-division, said it was crucial to reassure the local community.
She said: "Unfortunately, in recent weeks we have had to deal with the tragic death of Charles Bowman, following the large-scale disturbance which took place in Carmyle Avenue.
"It has been a difficult time but thanks to the support of the community and some detailed inquiries, a 22-year-old man has now been arrested in connection with the incident.
"As Carmyle is typically a quiet area this incident has no doubt shocked the local community.
"I would therefore like to reassure them that we are committed to tackling violent crime in the area.
"By working together with our partner agencies and local residents we are determined to minimise and make a positive impact on reducing violence within our communities.
"It is our intention that the camera will help reduce fears and help restore the feeling of safety within the Carmyle area."
The move follows the recent introduction of additional CCTV cameras across the East End in a six-month, police-led initiative.
