Unit opens to help patients with addictions

A NEW unit to support people with drink and drug problems in Glasgow has opened, promising better care for people who need intensive support but not full-time hospital care.

The Kershaw unit at Gartnavel Royal Hospital has been refurbished to offer a day hospital service, seven days a week.

Patients who do not need round-the-clock nursing care visit the unit for detox services, medication, and a range of therapies to help with mental health problems.

Staff also work with patients to help them learn new skills so that they can get their lives outside back on track as they recover.

And the fact that patients can return home each day helps them to keep in touch with normal life.

Health Minister Nicola Sturgeon opened the unit officially during a tour yesterday when she met patients and staff.

She said: "This is a fantastic facility. It is exactly the right environment for the services provided here."

The minister said she was honoured to have the task of officially opening the centre which would help tackle one of the key health issues facing Scots patients.

She added: "Tackling drug and alcohol misuse is a priority for the Scottish Government and for health boards. An important part of that is to provide the appropriate care and treatment for people trying to overcome addictions."

While the unit offers day care to patients it has access to seven beds at the hospital for patients who need to be admitted for more intensive support.
