Task force to tackle cities’ gull menace

by Brian Currie

THE menace of urban seagulls is to be tackled by destroying their nests.

Environment Minister Mike Russell today announced he was forming a Seagull Task Force to combat the growing problem.

It will find ways to prevent gulls from nesting and how nests can be effectively destroyed.

These include installing wires and spikes in known nesting areas.

Mr Russell said: "Seagulls thrive on litter and their aggressive behaviour towards other birds, pets and even people is increasingly problematic.

"I even read this week about a young paperboy who has had to abandon his deliveries due to attacks from the birds."

In Glasgow, gull numbers have increased over the last 25 years largely due to the boom in fast-food outlets.

The city council says its public health unit is receiving a rising number of complaints about the gulls.

They include aggression, droppings and the birds raiding refuse bags and bins.

Last month the Evening Times reported how a falcon taking part in the Glasgow Show was chased by up to 50 gulls.

It failed to return to its handler after it was "dive-bombed" and wasn't recovered until two days later.

And at the Faslane naval base, sailors watched as a five-week old kitten was snatched and then dropped on to a barbed wire fence by a gull.

The task force will start work in Dumfries.

Mr Russell said: "I expect the task force to swing into action next spring to coincide with the next breeding season.

"If successful, lessons learned will be shared with other local authorities."

Yet another example of how unsuccessful the Clean Glasgow campaign has been: £5 million of city taxpayers' money down the drain just so that a wee puffed-up popinjay politician could get his mug in the paper... and litter is still at the forefront of problems that ever-dwindling tourist cite after visiting the city.

Cull the Gulls!! then they won't need to nest or poo on cars, property and people.

The Gulls are unfortunately being demonised when they are actually a consequence of the filthy proletariate who discard their uneaten junk food on the streets with abandon. Why not have a special 'scumbag' tax on fast food outlets which could be used to boost the street cleaning in the most litter prone areas where the filthy people who eat the filthy food throw their filthy rubbish.

I thought gulls were RSPB protected and therefore you couldn't kill them?

While some people will not bother their a**s to use a bin to put their left over food into. That will not stop the gulls from trying to gain access to food. I have been dive bombed many times by gulls trying to take food off of me, whilst I am walking through town, eating.

Best thing to do is make the bins bigger, empty the bins on a more regular basis, clamp down on the litter, especially when pubs and clubs close, the amount of litter (and seagulls) at 4am/5am on a sun morning is disgraceful, its like a scene from the birds.

Agree with this one. If Glaswegians spent as much time picking up their litter as they do on their fake tans we'd have a much cleaner city.

Nothing to do with the decimation of the Scottish fishing industry then?:-(

Why don't the Orwellian camera vans which patrol our streets all day fine the gulls for defacating in public, like they do with humans? Is that why the council have closed all the city's public toilets, so they can fine more people for doing it in public??

Don't be a minger. What possible reason would someone have for doing the toilet in public? No excuse for it.

Back to the gulls. They are a bit of a pest, but no more so that manky humans on Glasgow's public transport. Do something about them.

Can no-one else see the opportunity here?
If we capture the birds, we can then process them INTO 'burgers' for the fast-food restaurants. McSeagull Sandwich anyone?

Hey Alan,
Maybe the people should not walk around with food all the time.

Why doesn’t the council or the RSPB trap the gulls, humanely of course. Easily done. Boxes placed on rooftops etc. with food inside as a lure. Once inside, the gulls can be transported to their natural habitat, Ayrshire coast etc.

The gulls would be happier there. It’s not in their interests to live off scraps of humans’ junk food.

Might sound a daft idea but it would save the gulls from being culled, or harmed.

Just name them 'Feathered Rats, and fine the ejits that continue to feed them in the streets, usualy little old ladies in rainmates.
Posted by: The Wise One, Glasgow on 10:18am Sat 23 Aug 08
Put a bounty on their head, for example, a £1 for a bird handed in dead or alive.

Those wee ladies in their rainmates could make a killing, no pun intended.

BLOCKEM...some gulls do nest in Glasgow but alot of the gulls you see in Glasgow travel there from the coast so transporting them there just saves them commuting!!

With so many wild birds in the streets it's worth remembering, don't kiss wild birds or you may get an untweetable canarial disease.
ps. I thought the comment section had reached terrible pun time

Brilliant proposal. I hope GCL are taking note but make sure RSPB carries out the seagulls’ one way trips to the seaside.

Gulls do not fly up to Glasgow to scavenge and return on a daily basis - over the years they have built up a small colony here. Most know of no other habitat than living in towns. I trust you were kidding.

the in mates would probably like them to eat(dont tell them though,) and it would help towards the cost of meals we taxpayers pay dearly for, there is also a high class meal served in europe somewhere of water rats.....no kidding, so serve that to them too, its called a little taste of culture!

Fully agree here.
Take away the gulls food source, and fine the litter louts who throw away their take aways at 12, 1 & 2 am. Not only are they feeding the growing rat populations but the gulls as both posts above state . . . .

Nice one T.A.

How about entering gulls in the Olympics diving category. Or accuracy for sh$tting on folks heads / cars.

Why not just put targets on the top of our heads & cars to make it easier for them - LOL ;-)

As for their name not so much "Seagulls" but "Seegulls" - their bl00dy everywhere.!.

Maybe we could enter them on the "Best Choir Standing?" Programme on the Beeb - under - "The Gull Chorus! as they make some amount of noise & their not even in tune - shocking! LOL ;-)
