City looks to Sweden in blitz on sex trade

by Gordon Thomson

GLASGOW men who pay for sex could be outlawed if a crackdown on prostitution in the city goes ahead.

Council chiefs and police are in talks with law enforcers in Sweden, where tough new laws on prostitution were introduced nine years ago.

Under Swedish law, paying for sex is punished by fines or up to six months in jail.

Glasgow council chiefs want to target men who pay sex workers who operate from city flats, saunas or brothels. Attempts will also be made to persuade prostitutes to quit the sex industry.

A ban on kerb crawling was introduced last year but deputy council leader Jim Coleman wants a zero-tolerance approach to men buying sex.

He said: "We applaud and plan to emulate the Swedish approach. For the best of reasons, many residents believe that if you regulate prostitution you make women safe. But as soon as you discover the violence and exploitation endured by women every day, it cannot possibly be condoned."

Ann Wilson, who heads the city's community safety services, said: "Sexual exploitation is completely unacceptable so we're doing what we can to tackle the demand.

"No country or city has managed to get rid of the problem but countries such as Sweden have begun to see an impact."

A Swedish delegation of police and government officials is due to visit Glasgow in a few months to resume talks following earlier discussions this year.

Glasgow has yet to indicate when it plans to lobby the Scottish Government for the powers needed for a crackdown on men who pay for sex.

Charity workers at the Scottish Prostitutes Education Project remain sceptical. A spokeswoman said: "Studies show that criminalisation and clampdowns on kerb crawlers merely cause sex workers to work longer hours in great isolation, leaving them more vunerable to attacks."

Here we go again... yet another ill-conceived, badly-planned, knee-jerk shot-in-the-dark which - according to expert opinion worldwide - will actually make the problem worse by driving sex workers underground where they will be even more vulnerable and even less protected.

Do the fools at Glasgow City Council sit up all weekend thinking about how to make the lives of the most vulnerable in this city even more painful?

If this nonsense ever made it into law, someone could do more time for visiting a massage parlour than selling drugs or GBH....

Haven't we more pressing crimes to be sorting out ?

I doubt many women do this because they want to, so where will they get money if the council are successful in their plans ?

Funding to help get them out of it will be minimal, so I can only see this generating more crime as desperate women turn to thieving etc to raise money.

Another loopy scheme from a crusading council.

I don't know if the council can pull this off, but it could be a great blow to Glasgows sex tourism industry. At least Meep should be happy.

THERE IS NO DANGER OF THIS HAPPENING BECAUSE ITS THE COUNCILLORS AND POLITICIANS THAT USE THIS INDUSTRY AND THE GIRLS WHO PROVIDE THE SERVICE ARE MAINLY DRUG DEPENDANT SO THEY WILL NOT GIVE THIS UP

Surely it's the men who are being exploited:-(

I think prostitution should be free for ugly folk.
If you are ugly, and I mean ugly (sydney meriwhether ugly), then you should get prostitution on the NHS.
Posted by: Pete, Glasgow on 4:31pm Mon 25 Aug 08
You'd only get that on the BUPA. On the NHS they just give you a speciality magazine and draw the screens...

Poor Sydney...

I'm sure that these establishments are up to date with their rates and council tax.Doesn't that make the GCC pimps and ponces?

Lobby parliament my arse, they'll just phone McAskill who will issue puritanical edicts regarding prostitution and alcohol but continue to reap the benefits from his targets, council tax from brothels, business rates from saunas and pubs, fixed penalty notices from the frequenters.

time effort and money wasted on this would be better used trying to catch the perpetrators of the rapes and sexual assaults being committed on a daily basis in the glasgow area, instead of trying to push prostitutes and their clients into the seedy underworld of glasgow.
if the council wants to do something why not the way amsterdam has found, clean tax paying prostitutes in clean safe parlours.

Tam-m. I concur.

But thats too sensible for the cooncil. Only ideas generated by nuggets are considered.

---speaks for its self---i take it earlier this year some councillors had a free outing to sweden to discuss this.if this falls through perhaps they will go to the bahamas to see how they deal with prostitution over there.
at the tax payers expense of course.

If men want to pay for sex that's their business.

What about all the men who pay for sex and don't get any, i.e. married men.

The only reason men go looking for women is that they haven't found a good looking sheep. Instead of cloning them, why don't they spend the money trying to improve their looks.

Sydney I strongly suggest you look at the Swedish experience with an open mind.
Many people think they are being progressive and liberal by supporting the decriminaliastion of prostitution. But the Swedish approach has not only drastically reduced the numbers of people engaged in street prostitution it has also reduced trafficking.

In Amsterdam by contrast the majority of prostitutes are foreigners with no identity papers - in other words they have been trafficked.

You will never eliminate trafficking just as you will never eliminate prostitution. But you still have a choice between making it easy and making it hard.

Tam and Joe Schmo - you have a somewhat romanticised view of Amsterdam.

The mayor of Amsterdam is reconsidering legal prostitution, claiming that it had not successfully protected it's 'sex workers'. Rather than the popular perception of independent happy hookers the evidence is that prostitution in Amsterdam is still controlled by crimonals.

That is why they have shut down much of the red light district, just keeping a few streets for the tourists.

A typcially arse-for-tit approach buy the Council and Police.

The women are not selling sex because men wish to buy it.

They are selling their bodies because they are addicted to heroin .

Criminalising men will not break the cycle of heroin addiction ---> need money ---> sell body.

But, then the Cooncil and Polis never let the facts/reality get in the way of their tokenism, do they?

HGlasgwegian, Glasgow on 1:50pm today

pros are going to ply their trade no matter what, so by allowing it in massage parlours or licensed brothels they can keep an eye on whats happening.the police would then be free to allocate more time to finding the forced prossies ..not a perfect solution but forcing pros and their punters into the underworld puts both in a dangerous environment.opening both parties up to abuse and violence.
i am not advocating prostitution but i think they deserve a realm of safety to ply their trade.

Men will always go looking for sex, asking innocent women in the street "How much" and hassling youngsters...cos there are plenty of pervs out there...prostitution is here to stay and we should be licensing it..monitor the clients to protect the women...
