Why do you need to lower the tone? Insulting Fredo is hardly constructive input.
Airguns should be banned. End of.

It was only a matter of time before this happened. When will the indifferent politicians take action. How often does this sort of thing have to happen before they begin to care ?

Honestly - what's the arguement against a total ban on air pistols / rifles ? If someone needs a licence then let them be the exeption and apply for a licence - apart from that - get them banned !!

When is this going to end? Constant inaction from politically impotent leaders lead directly to death and serious injury on the streets, THESE PEOPLE SHOULD BE HELD TO ACCOUNT.
Fifteen years ago my friend was left in a coma after being smashed in the head with a brick and still EVERY DAY I see these potentially deadly weapons lying on the streets. Two years ago a boy I went to school with was glassed, and permanently scarred, yet walk into any home store and they are there on the shelves, GLASSES, and cups too, for anyone to avail themselves of, when will someone with balls take the helm and implement the rules this country needs to allow us and our children to walk the streets without fear for our lives?!

This is againjust proof that you cannot have any half measures for legislation of airguns.
They either need to be outlawed / banned completely, otherwise trying to govern / police them is virtually impossible.
To be able to police the sales of airguns we need enough police - which we do not have.
To be able to ensure that the age of those who posess airguns is legal, and the criteria for possession must be far tighter than it is at present.
Ultimately if shops continue to run a business, and make money from the sales of airguns, however law abiding they are, you will always get illegal sales, and dodgy deals.
Like the banning of the use of mobile phones in cars whilst driving, or smoking in public places - these pieces of legislation can never be fully enforced.
ULTIMATELY IT IS NO GOOD TO SIMPLY CHANGE THE LAW AND HOPE THAT AIRGUNS WILL BE POLICED SAFELY OR USED RESPONSIBLY. THE LAW IS ALL TOO OFTEN AN A55 AND WE NEVER HAVE ENOUGH POLICE TO ENFORCE ALL THE NEW PIECES OF LAW INTRODUCED.

In Switzerland, officially, "gun crime is very rare".
In Switzerland, and until very recently, it was compulsory for [italic]every[/italic] adult male to keep a rifle or SMG at home along with a quantity of ammunition.
So what's the difference between our countries?
In Switzerland the weapon [bold]training[/bold] is compulsory and every male is taught to respect their weapon and what it does or can do. They know how to safely handle their weapons and how to safely store them.
Our knee jerk reaction to any of these dreadful atrocities is to slap bans on gun clubs and even army rifle ranges (as in Glasgow).
There will always be a fascination for weapons, so those interested should be actively encouraged to train how to use them and how to behave when in control of such a weapon.
So do the opposite, open more gun clubs!

current air gun law 4 u lot 2 read from airgun shooting website.
AIRGUN LAW GENERAL
Airgun shooting in the U.K. is governed by extremely strict firearms laws and there are severe penalties for anyone who breaks them, even if they do so unintentionally.
With the introduction of the Anti-Social Behaviour Act 2004, there have been certain amendments to the Firearms Acts 1968-1997. You can no longer have an airgun (loaded or unloaded) in a public place – even cased – unless you have lawful authority or a reasonable excuse. This may be that you are on the way to a gun shop, to a shooting club or to grounds where you have permission to shoot.
You can only take your airgun onto land over which you have permission to shoot, regardless of whether or not you intend to shoot it. If you trespass with your airgun, you are committing an offence of ‘armed trespass’.
The Violent Crime Reduction Act 2006 has also made changes to airgun law and the primary changes are detailed elsewhere on this site.
The important aspects of the airgun laws are abridged as follows:
OWNING AN AIRGUN
You do not need a licence to own an air rifle or air pistol providing it is not capable of exceeding a certain power limit with any brand of airgun pellet. The power limit it set at 12 ft. lbs. for air rifles, above which you need a firearms certificate (FAC). You cannot own an air pistol over 6 ft. lbs..
You must be 18 years of age or older to buy or acquire an airgun and it is an offence for anyone to give someone under 18 an airgun as a gift.
You must be 18 years of age or older to buy ammunition for an airgun.
CARRYING YOUR AIRGUN
Your airgun should be contained in a secure case if being carried in a public place.
You must be at least 18 years old to carry your airgun in a public place and you must have lawful authority or a reasonable excuse for doing so.
Your airgun is considered ‘loaded’ if there is any form of projectile in the breech or magazine, regardless of whether or not the gun is cocked.
SHOOTING YOUR AIRGUN
It is an offence to shoot your airgun on land where you have not been given permission to shoot by the occupier, usually the landowner or tenant. You cannot shoot on ‘common’ land.
You cannot shoot your airgun within 15 metres of the centre of a public highway if, in doing so, you are causing a nuisance or endangering the public.
It is an offence if you fire your pellets so that they travel beyond the boundary of the property where you have a right to shoot.
It is a serious offence to kill or injure any bird or protected animal with an airgun unless you are an ‘authorised’ person – i.e. you have proper shooting permission. Provided you are, the Secretary of State automatically issues you with a general ‘open’ licence every year for this purpose.
YOUNG PERSONS
Under 18 years of age, you cannot be in possession of an airgun unless you are supervised by someone aged at least 21, or are using it at an approved club. However, from the age of 14, you can shoot your airgun on your own and without adult supervision provided you are on private land and have consent of the landowner.
However, until you are 18, you are not allowed to carry your airgun to that land unless you are supervised by a person aged at least 21. In any event, the rules outlined in ‘Carrying Your Airgun’ (above) apply.
If you are aged under 14 years old, you can only shoot your airgun under the direct supervision of someone aged 21 years or older on land over which you have permission to shoot. The supervisor is legally responsible for the actions of the person they are supervising and no pellet must go outside the boundaries of the land. You can also use an airgun at Home Office-approved clubs or at a fairground shooting gallery for target shooting

How about an intelligence test before being allowed to post a comment?
Let's give them a chance, say MA/ CA*100 >50?
Either that or just delete the ones that come from the bottom of the food chain.

goodness
why is everyone arguing?
a toddler lies with severe head injuries hospitalised, because a 5 yr old opened fire. Wee andrew morton died after being shot by one as well, RIP wee darling.
what is this world coming to when no one supervises an airgun away from defenceless children who do not know what is a 'toy' or what is 'real'?
i would like to see them all banned ,or at least kept safely away from the public, kept in special locked cabinets and sold to those with special permission licences i.e farmers.
what in Gods name do people buy these things for? I must be really ignorant. is it target practice on wee birds and other sick inhumane acts? I just do not 'get' it.
had it been an adult male on his own wooded farmland with his airgun doing whatever and shoot his self by accident, i have no problem with that scenario as he was the adult-and he would not be in same critical state ,as he is not an 18mths old baby.
so they are perhaps used for culling and pest control etc. But no way should a child ever see a weapon let alone manage unsupervised to shoot someone with it.
I too would like to see them things outlawed.

thanks bear, i didnt know all that info. wee neds in my street had one here and they were firing it at my car a couple of yrs ago, didnt need to be a bullistics expert to see what direction/window it was fired out of. the babies seat was covered in square car window glass, when the side window came in and i cut my hands to shreds trying to pick it all off and i was in tears also , i was really upset that police were not interested when i reported the pellet and the bullet hole .
i was greeting like a big baby and a woman offered me a plaster for my cuts as i tried to shovel it away . cos i stay alone and i thought what if they had hit my wean .
same age as andrew morton at the time
the mum got an asbo, through something else before i had even moved here as someone said her family are trouble i have read their crimes in the paper so its always scumbags isnt it?.

edna, seems like there are neadrathals in all places, my freind had a lot of trouble in her neighbourhood too...she went to an army and navy store and bought camouflage gear and hung the outfit on the washing line....huge size, no more torment.(the cowards are the ones who like to threaten, either by boasting that they have weapons or show them off to their gang members, luckily enough the council can take the houses off them for asbo, even if the house is private and even if there is some one in the home who is 'not quite right'and had dealings with the police, social wotkers take the vulnerable person away to be looked after by suitable sources.

Ban these airguns things, only neds who end upo owning one in Glasgow. Seeing as no adult faces charges in the Brum, can only assume it was a freak accident.
Unlike: Taking aim out a window at fire engines when you are aged 27 and murdering a toddler in the process= not very bright .
The fredo psuedotroll is quite amusing in a sad way , makes for some enlightening reading that persons can reach a new level in arguing about nothing in type. Right am hungry away to eat, troll and chips.
