Who'd hire someone who lacks the initiative to find his way to an interview ?
Apparently he couldn't use the internet or phone book to look up their address ?
I hope this boy and his idiot father end up paying the costs for this farcical attempt to gain compensation for their own stupidity.
Folk like these, trying to screw money out where they can, is costing us all.
Perhaps if the father had spent as much time pursuing his boy's schooling as he does chasing compy, this would never have happened in the first place.
Either way, it's pathetic if he hadn't the wits to find the place or if he just used that as an excuse to launch a claim.

This sixteen-year-old is after a job. Like lots of sixteen-year-olds he doesn't know everything about the world of work. I remember getting lost on the way to an interview in Paisley travelling from Glasgow when I was 16. Sure, it wouldn't have occurred to me to pursue the issue through a tribunal, but this was probably a daft idea on his dad's part.
At least he's actively looking for a job, and he deserves encouragement, not being slagged off.

By being so litigious for such a petty reason where the blame lays squarely at his feet, he may have rendered himself unemployable.
What employer is going to risk employing a teenager that doesn't have basic skills, refusing to take responsibility, but has demonstrated a clear risk that he'll take them to the cleaners at the first opportunity?
He could have just put it down to experienced and learned the lesson that if he wants to get a job, he has to demonstrate some maturity and common sense.
He may well have been actively looking for a job but when he's not dawdling, he's spending his energy finger pointing at innocent parties at huge public cost.
That kid is a liability.

He's obviously immature, lacks resourcefulness, is easily influenced by his father. His dad is a major liability, too, feeding his fantasy that he's hard done by and ruining his son's reputation by mounting that wasteful legal action.
A better approach would have been for him to have apologised to the company whose time he wasted by standing them up and demonstrated to them that he was worth a second chance.
Then he could have spent 5 mins popping to his local bus or train station to enquire about timetables to attend the second interview that the company offered, since he's clearly incapable of opening the yellow pages or using the internet to get this info. £40 for a cab?
But we've all been teenagers nervous about entering the job market for the first time and have made gaffes. This is why I am restraining myself with my description of him and his actions.
It's just his gaffes has been amplified by a misplaced sense of injustice and it's a shame that it's likely to be very counterproductive for him as he's now publicly humiliated himself.

I wonder what he put on the application form assuming he can write!!
Unable to use a computer or internet (to look up company history and directions)
Unable to use a telephone (to call the company and ask how best to get there)
Unable to communicate in general by asking a member of the public for directions bus times etc.
I think there has to be more to this story or the dad has more front than Blackpool!
Why doesn’t the 16 year old go to college and learn computers or internet! And maybe telephone skills.
Are there any college courses for common sense!
Employers beware this guy could sue you unless u pick him and his dad up and take them back home!

Found this quote from the company that won the tribunal on another website which shows you how strange it is and offers another perspective.
"A spokeswoman for the company, which employs 800 people throughout the UK, said they were amazed that it ever got to a tribunal.
"This is the most bizarre tribunal case we have ever had. We didn't even meet him. He didn't turn up for two interview requests and it ended up at a tribunal."
Who'd hire someone who lacks the initiative to find his way to an interview ?
Heidthebaw seems to have hit the nail on the head. For the few interviews ive attended the frst thing i did was print out the directions from the likes of google maps or photocopy a street atlas. I'd have a look at the bus/train times and make sure I knew where I was going and that i would be on time.
Dare I say it, but this seems to be another example of the rediculous claim culture that has sifted our way from the states.
Adverts on television for lawyers to help you claim are absurd! I was in a minor bump the other week in my car - a passerby said, and i quote, "want some advice, when the police come just sit in our car and say your neck hurts - gets you a fortune" He was politely told to p*** off.
Anyway, who is would employ 'darren' now? to any future employer he seems like the kind of person to stir up trouble...

This is so retarded, you couldn't make it up, moreso as Glasgow has lots of cranks such as this character.
Maybve he was from caveman descent and could only speak basic language, wear basic clothes and stay within the confines of the local tribe.
Probably better of on incapacity - reason being is that they have no sense of direction - what chance has people like this got if they cannot travel to the other side of Glasgow, which is no way near as large as London.
It sounds like this person or caveman has never been outside Pollok - the type who sends postcards when the y go into Glasgow for the day.
Next it will be that somebody is suing kellogs cos they don't know how to make a bowl of cornflakes or somebody is suing Ayrshire Farmers cos they don't know how to cook potatoes.
Madness, many thanks ET for publicising how backward people are becoming, usually seen on a daily basis on buses etc, but now you have shown this sad aspect of reality in print.

The tribunal heard how Darren insisted that a taxi would have cost him up to £40 to attend the interview and he had no idea how to get to Shettleston by bus and trains.
Was the taxi going via Prestwick?
Just as well he wasn't going for a job as a postman.
Funny stuff man!

I take it our education system has stopped teaching how to read maps then? If I was desperate enough for a job, whether in Shettleston or Shepperton, I'd research my route, and plane my travelling time well ahead of the interview. Just for the record, if Peabrain from Pollok took the big shiny thing with wheels (I think they're called buses!!..) into the city centre, then get another big shiny bus thingy frm Argyle Street (used to be the 61/62/64 done the route - I haven't been in Glasgow for over 2 years). Now... If anybody there needs directions to Shepperton, I'll be only too pleased to help!! LOL!!

I don't know what the boys father was thinking about. If my son was that stupid I'd be hiding in shame, not trying to take all and sundry to court for a quick buck !! Wasters the pair of them !

still here's hoping that teenage bams like the one in question don't go on to reproduce future bams or dear knows where we will end up.
I appreciate that not everyone has access to or even knows how to work the internet but please don't tell me that this guy or even his father (what a jerk) couldn't have phoned or even walked into a train or bus station to ask how to get to the interview location. I just don't get this mentality. Some folk can't do anything for themselves. Next thing teenage bams like the one above will be expecting the government to wipe their ****!

This idiot should have had costs awarded against him. Employment tribunals are there to deal with important issues not these time wasters. Too often people use ETs as a way to force companies to settle a case rather than pay for the costs of a defence. It's time that expenses were awarded more often.

According to the Scotsman, "The tribunal heard that when he failed to turn up, he was contacted at home where he explained that he didn't know how to find his way from Pollok to the company's Shettleston office – a 20-minute car journey.
The company said they told him how to get there and he was offered the chance of another interview, which he failed to take up."
I don't think many companies would even bother to call back candidates that didn't bother to show up for the interview and didn't contact them to say they couldn't make it, let alone offer another interview and give personalised directions for them!

It's a good job they had more sense in the old days or most of the world would have remainded undiscovered.
It looks like their publicity is backfiring on them as they just look like muppets.
I always thought you had to be or have been IN employment to go to a tribunal.
Pity help anyone employing these dafties.

If the tribunal had the facility to make the claimant pick up the full costs for a spurious claim if they determine they are 100% to blame, then this would act as a deterrant to dumb claims like this.
My guess is that as the claimant is unemployed, they would have been entitled to free legal aid, so don't bear any consequences when it gets laughed out of court.
Clearly, this claimant didn't think anything through, from how to prepare for an interview, through to how they would reduce their employment prospects by scaring away future employers.
I always thought you had to be or have been IN employment to go to a tribunal.
Not so!!.. I succesfully sued ETAM PLC in 1985 (I think that was the year!). It made the statute books regarding sex discrimination. I was refused an interview by them on the grounds that I am male, and would be working in a female-oriented retail store. The point of my own claim was that ETAM clearly failed to obtain an exception to the post being for FEMALES ONLY, as defined by the sex discrimination act. Funnily enough, the Evening Times put that on their front page too!!

Johnny Punchclock states "At least he's actively looking for a job, and he deserves encouragement, not being slagged off."
I wouldn't call failing to keep a date for an interview as actively seeking employment. I wonder if he got the job whether he would drag his dad along to advise him on which tool to use? I would't be happy in employing him.

And all of this palaver for a boy who has just completed nearly twelve years of education!
As a ten-year-old boy I could traverse Glasgow in any direction from Cambuslang to Whiteinch and from Pollock to Parkhead.
Now, I wonder if I could have sued the tram companies if I got lost? After all, I paid a halfpenny for my fare on most journies.
Sometimes it just don't pay to get up in the mornings (to read about numpties like Darren).

I can undetstand the attraction on the surface, but apparently companies like McDonalds have a policy that staff can eat as much food as they want in the hope that they get so sick of the food that you won't be bothered or want it after that.
That would be tragic if the ladies clothes shop had the same policy.

Exactly. That's the mentality of so many people and what happens....... they later moan about how they under paid and what a great job they do. And then muppets like StewieGriffin and Hugo come along and start banging on about how it's shameful that these people aren't paid the same as the ones who educated themselves.

As a 16 year old, when I worked for them (which required me to walk some distance to catch a bus whose timetable I looked up before my interview), the cost of the food you could have on your breaks was strictly limited to the duration of the shift and strictly monitored and recorded.
When Darren actually gets a job, he'll soon find out that it is the employees role to please the employer and adhere to their rules, and that it is the employer that is doing the employee a favour, not the other way around.

Don’t know what has shocked me more about this case..
The utter stupidity of the idiot 16 year old….(I Googled the company..…first thing that comes up is a map!!!!!!..their office is about a 40 second walk from Shettleston railway station…
Or the quote from resident legal rent-a-quote, Cameron Fyfe…perhaps he could explain why people think they can claim for anything…can’t be anything to do with some of the cases he’s pursued down the years with attendant media fawning…????

As a Hiring Manager, we have on occasion provided directions to prospective employees - it is not a necessity. Anyone who has applied for the job, would have and should have assessed were their interview would be held and how they are going to get there.
If he was unable to determine how to get to his interview, he could have called the Head Office and asked for directions - our better still do what I did when I worked in Glasgow at a Recruitment Agency - gave the number of First Bus and got them to tell him the correct bus numbers and routes.
It just wasted time and money in going to a tribunal to claim compensation for age discrimination - it clearly showed the company allowed him to complete an application, set up and interview - the 16 year old decided not to follow through from start to finish. What a waste of tax payers money.

What a farce.Seems a bit strange that the kid's dad does not know how to get to Shettleston but is able to go to a tribunal!I bet they know where Celtic Park is(less than 2 miles away)but the real truth is he probably could not be bothered going. Also, as he stays next to silverburn, i see adverts advertising a bus direct to town so surely he must have seen the same adverts.Strike off the law firm daft enough to represent him and claim legal aid at the taxpayers expense.

Just noticed the journo's name that compiled this story - JOHNATHAN PAISLEY. Rumour has it Darren is hiring a hitman to wipe him out - As soon as he can work out how a phone works, and whereabouts in Paisley he lives!!.. He'd do the hit himself, only he doesn't know what bus to take, as he's never been to Paisley!!

DOES THIS BOY NOT SPEAK TO HIS PARENTS?? IF I WAS NOT SURE OF HOW TO GET FROM POINT A TO POINT B I WOULD ASK SOMEONE FAMILIER WITH THE BUS SERVICE. ALL HE HAD TO DO WAS PICK UP A PHONE AND ASK DETAILS ON HOW TO GET THERE. HE BETTER GET HIMSELF A MAP OF GLASGOW AND THE SURROUNDING AREAS FOR THE FUTURE INTERVIEWS. GOOD LUCK TO HIM ON THE JOB HUNT.

Actually, I give the litigious timetable-allergic teenager the benefit of the doubt around accusations that he was evading the interview in order to continue claiming benefits.
I am optimistic that he did want the job rather than continue claiming any paltry sums of income support he is eligible for, just that he had an enlarged sense of entitlement to the role.
The time and energy expended on preparing for that tribunal could have been more productively spent on applying for the dozens of retail, catering or cleaning vacancies at Silverburn, Braehead or the city centre.
Now, of course, employers will be nervous of him because he has demonstrated a total lack of knowledge of his employment rights.
PS - If the tribunal needed him to turn up in person, would he have been able to have found the venue?

what a complete little wasts of space, and his father is obviously worse! In my day (not that long ago) my father woukld have booted me (not literally for the benefit of the PC mob) out the door to find my way to a job, not spent time planning a tribunal.
I would suggest that he would have a job by now if he wasnt engaging in legal arguements and wasting everybodies time.
Useless waste of space, and as other say - who will now emply either of them.

This story is truly shocking. These people are an embarrassment to the human race. Only complete morons would claim what they did. Anything for money eh? Who would want to live on the same street as such people?
If he really wanted a job he would have went for the interview. Do such people think that people are thick?
WHO would ever give him OR his father a job now?
Baldric - I have a cunning plan? Beyond belief really.

WHO would ever give him OR his father a job now?
Baldric - I have a cunning plan? Beyond belief really.

Darren, if you read this, consider the kind of pathetic wee bullies who are creaming themselves about the chance to slag you off.
First of all, they are likely to be a lot older than sixteen. Much, much older than sixteen. And there's a fair chance that none of them have actually done a hand's turn of work in recent years.
Secondly, they seem to have a lot of time on their hands. They probably also have very poor personal hygiene, and are sitting in their underwear in a darkened room with a box of paper hankies nearby. you know what I mean. Some don't even live here but take an obsessive interest in local news.
Thirdly, why do you think people like that, who smell, and have nothing better to do during the day than slag off a teenager, are so bitter? Because they are basically disappointed old farts whose best days are behind them. Well past their sell-by dates.
Of course you should have checked out the route to the address you were going to using Google and using the Traveline website, and you will know better next time.
And it was a mistake to go to the Tribunal without talking to a lawyer (not Cameron Fyfe, though), and to have listened to legal advice.
But stuff it, and stuff them. You are sixteen, and they are a bunch of stinky old farts. **** them if they can't take a joke.

A lot of people are saying that the boy went for this jobn because he was frightened his benefits would be cut. You don't get JSA at age sixteen.

Here is some interesting posts I found on a website,it seems to center around the scottish cooperative, and posted by some guy called Big Kenny, does anybody know any of the people mentioned ?

Coop planning Whisky Galore Giveaway, if you vote for nu labour at the next general election.
*
Here is the latest ! a Cooperative spokesman,J.M.Steven
sonson has stated that voters who vote for Labour at the next "general election" will recieve 3 free bottles of malt whisky as a reward. Details of this incentive can be obtained form there web site,or by telephoning there head office and asking for the personnel dept !!
For more details copy the link below, and paste it into your browser claim your whisky now !

To Alex from Kent the cooperative labour supporter........
...
Alex did you not mean a "conivence" retailer ! they are very good at Scheming, as well !
and I say this on good authority for I know all about them. As for there Ethics" just like nu labour they are very short on morals,
I could write a book on there gross mismanagement
with details to confirm them. ie the store were half a million pounds went missing is only one of them
A personnel manager attempting to pervert the course of justice by coercing an employee and a security guard to change there story regarding 3 stolen bottles of whisky !
(even though the shoplifter who had stolen the whisky pled guilty to the offence and had been sentenced )
so that they could get something on the store manager to construct his
dismissal,a very devious lot is the coop. I pity the future for somerfield staff with this lot. It's time to pay the ferryman mrJ.M. Stevenson !!
no concern about the loss of company goods ie
the 3 bottles of malt whisky, constructive dismissal was more important at the time, after all it
was only 60 quid that was lost a small price to pay to try and reach your intended target !!
Quote ! the Coop need nu labour, there morals and ethics, are the same !
*****
Here is another fact about them you will remember mr alex barr from Kent. The story of colin beating me up ! do you recall ?
***
I remember that christmas night out in the coop for store managers and regional managers, at the horseshoe bar in glasgow, one regional manager called Colin Martin,(nicknamed the boxer )battered a store manager to pulp and was not sacked even although fighting meant instant dismissal as per company policy. This was the second assault this particular regional manager had made on a company employee and got away with it,he was one of what was known as the "select club" unsackable ! in other words !
Therefore Somerfield managers if you are invited to a coop xmas night out, wear body armour or take some CS spray with you, you may need it ! the "Boxer" could be there !!!
Yes Colin it's me ! big Kenny the guy you hated !!

It says he failed to turn up for a job interview. Did he even leave the house? Did he make any attempt to get to the interview? Maybe he should have asked his Dad for directions...wait...
I'd bet his father has never heard of Shettleston...travel
s no further than the benefits office, Pub and the Bookies. I'm not surprised by the claim though, in light of some of these tribunals past awards it was worth a try.

Why are there no photos of this character who was too stupid to call the bus company to find out which bus travells closest to his new job I want to laugh at him as much as the next guy. Would a brain be asking too much of the youth of today or is that neds. What about his father though, actually agreeing it might be a good blag to sue seems he has too much time on his hands and not enough sense.
