Summer’s sinking feeling

Shoppers have had to take cover this month
Shoppers have had to take cover this month

by Iain Lundy

GLASGOW has suffered one of its wettest Augusts in living memory with only three dry days in the month so far.

And the soggy summer is making people miserable as the feelgood factor is replaced by the feel worse' effect, an academic claims.

The city has endured more than double the normal August rainfall already with forecasters warning there is more to come before the month ends.

Normally an average of 80mm of rain falls in Glasgow during August but so far this month the city has been drenched by more than 160mm.

A weatherman said today: "To have only three rain-free days in the month is pretty poor but there will be more rain before the weekend and on Saturday night."

The spokesman for weather forecasters Meteogroup said there had been three particularly bad days: August 1, 7 and 10, though he added: "Just about every day in Glasgow has had rain for a spell."

And it is claimed that the constant rain could have a "feel-worse" rather and feelgood effect.

Professor Nanette Mutrie, of Strathclyde University's department of sport, culture and the arts, said the effect was different from seasonal affective disorder, brought on by a lack of daylight.

But she added: "Poor weather conditions put people off doing outdoor activities.

"That will have a negative impact on overall activity levels and can be a link to how people feel.

"Being regularly active is positively linked to feeling good but people whose activity levels are curtailed get what we describe as a feel-worse' effect and their moods drop.

"We encourage them to do a little bit of exercise a day even in rain."

A spokeswoman for the National Farmers Union Scotland said farmers were waiting for a break in the bad weather to try to salvage crops, some of which would be "significantly reduced in quality".

Scotland has been one of the worst-hit regions of the UK this month.

Several homeowners and offices had to be evacuated after flash floods.

But Malcolm Cannon, managing director of Edinburgh-based Wellington bootmaker Hunter Boots said business had been brisk.

He said: "It has been another good year with around 300,000 pairs of wellies sold."

To save Sydney Meriwether the bother of turning his Vtech computer on, I'll comment for him.

Sorry but Summer 2008 is over. Let the trees turn brown, and march forward to Crimbo and New Year and hope that Summer 2009 is better.

Mind you, I remember saying this last year.......

If we didn't have such crap weather what would this paper have to report on ?

Surely we can read better news than what most folk already know.

Anyway, I know I don't want to be reminded about our crappy, wet, pouring rain day in, day out.

It's depressing enough looking out the window to see its pouring again.

Also, theres the public moaning about it, using the rain as an excuse for doing less, not dressing for the weather, or getting soaked & then complaining about it when it's "your" own fault.

Global warming may or may not be to blame, but until people all do more to conserve their energy used, use renewable energy, rechargeable batteries, wind up radios etc.

There are so many ways in which we can all do more for the environment and recycle etc the list is endless.

But, unless we all do more in a small way, accross the community, country, and globe the changing seasons - wetter summers & milder winters will only get worse.

I'm more surprised that none of you monkeys with red rosettes hasn't blamed Alex Salmond and the SNP government for the terrible weather. Oh but then again I suppose you will propbaly use it as an election slogan in the up coming fife by-election - lets face it youv'e got nothing else to play with.

Maybe the girls could wear white tee-shirts on these rainy days?

Nice one HH, but in fact I dinnae have a Vtech - or any PC at all - Mrs Meriwether says they are "devil's tools" (just like the microwave oven we don't have) and won't let them in the hoose!

Actually I have to mostly use the local (council/CSG) library to access the ET comments' pages... ooooh, the sweet, sweet irony of it all!!!

The weather is messed up all over....Here in Toronto, we have also had the wettest summer on record.

I feel sorry for any UK folk who have traveled over the pond for their summer holidays, only to face more rain than at home!

Our problem now is that we have a huge mosquito issue because of the dampness...Bring on the West Nile Virus!

Not being allianced in anyway to any political party, could someone explain to me why King Alec has not,as yet, relinquished his Westminster seat as he promised to do prior to his claiming the throne? Anyway what's someone from Perth doing commenting on Glasgow issues? Haven't you got the Sheepsh*ggers Digest or the Incest Almanac to keep you amused?

Albertz - there are plenty of Glaswegians who live up north (and elsewhere) who have a vested interest in what happens back home.

Alan_YYZ of Canada 4.33pm

Alan I came over from Glasgow to Ottawa late June to escape the Scottish summer and have done so these last few years, some years Scotland has been lucky (not many I grant you).

This year has been the worse in Ottawa (just up the road from you at Toronto)I have experienced these past 5 years, but hey, it just ain't ever as bad as it gets back home, as I say to people here in Ottawa, if you think the cloudy/sunny weather is bad....go live in Scotland, I'll take warm rain any day to cold.....

I'm hoping they'll be an indian summer back in Glasgow in September when I'm due to fly home again.
