City hotel boom is scaling new heights

Exclusive by Vivienne Nicoll

plans have been drawn up for a £140million hotel and office block in Glasgow - with a 270ft-tall glass tower as its centrepiece.

And details of the development - on the site of the former Albany Hotel in Bothwell Street - today earned the area the title mini Manhattan'.

Last year, the Evening Times revealed proposals for two hotels, a 14-storey office block and a European-style plaza at the site in the heart of the international financial services district.

But new plans for its replacement were lodged with the city council this week.

Aberdeen-based European Development Company now want to build a 4/5 star hotel with 320 bedrooms, a brasserie, lounge bar, piano bar, luxury spa, health and fitness facilities and conference centre.

The building will be split in two with the east side made up of 320,000 sq ft of office space capable of accommodating around 1800 staff.

London-based architects Aedas say the 18-storey Bothwell Plaza will be the tallest commercial property in the city to date and, because it will be both a hotel and office, will be the first building of its kind in Scotland.

It is believed the hotel will employ around 250 people with a further 1000 involved in the construction phase.

Building work is expected to begin this year and will be completed by 2011.

EDC director Ivor Finnie said: "We know how popular the Albany was as a venue for local people and for visitors to Glasgow.

"What we are planning is a completely new development which will carry with it the charm and attraction of the Albany to provide a first class hotel and conference centre."

Neil Baxter, secretary of the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland, said: "The concentration of tall buildings in that area gives it a mini-Manhattan feel, which is positive.

"Tall buildings can be fantastic or can simply be bland but the reputation of these architects goes before them and I am confident they will produce something which will do Glasgow proud."

The Albany opened in 1973 and in its heyday was a popular base for visiting celebrities. It was where Celtic legend Billy McNeill held his testimonial dinner.

Councillor Gordon Matheson said: "The site has been cleared and I am very keen to see development take place. That said, I think there needs to be further discussions with planning officers to sort out some of the details of this application, not least the proposed height of the building."

It will carry the charm and attraction of the Albany Hotel

Looks good. Another positive propoposal for the city. The gap sight left by the Albany closing is bad for the area. I hope this new hotel project will go ahead as soon as possible.

I think it's about time that Glasgow City Council were given the credit and respect they deserve. they're moving this city foward. Well Done Mr. Purcell and Co. Keep up the good work (here's to another four years in charge).

Moi??????

I stand by my comment. Deep in my heart I feel for Mr Purcell. Day after day he lead sthis city forward. In a relentless and often unrewarded manner, he takes us through these difficult times.
I admire the man. In fact............. he should be our Scottish Icon that the ET mention in another story.
Posted by: Brad on 12:30pm Thu 28 Aug 08
Well, I wouldn't want his job, and who would? That's part of the problem - we get the politicians we deserve. Also, Purcell doesn't really have that much power, and on those areas he does,he is heavily influenced by his officers.

I'm a bit confused by this story - work is expected to start this year but do they have full planning permission? Can't imagine it being withheld but it takes time to get.

Hope something gets built there shortly though.

Aye not the most imaginative of buildings but it will be good to see it when it's built - now that Elphinstone looks to have been canned.

Don't worry HH - Sydney will be along shortly to put the mockers on this new development.

I'm surprised nobody has picked up on this yet??

...today earned the area the title mini Manhattan'.

Err? How do you earn such a title? And why does the ET constantly need to feel the need to compare Glasgow with other cities? mini-Manhattan, Ingram Street is dubbed Glasgow's Bond street, the Financial District is dubbed Wall Street on the Clyde.

glasgow needs to start putting its words in to action instead of empty words that mean nothing
if you want to keep the big hotel chains hear you will nead to re-educate the people on the filth they are creating and glasgow needs to start using the power they where give to combat the filth

I don't work for the council. If you wish to be rude, at least get the facts right.

My mistake, I thought you worked for the council. Having read the drivel you post on a daily basis I came to the conclusion that the only place you would be employable in is the council.

See, I don't have to get the facts right to be rude.

As for the hotel, its a carbon copy box structure much like everything else that's popping up these days - tubes design cubes!

That'll catch on ;-)

Alway knew I was ahead of the times. When ever asked "where do you live" reply with the location and "like a Manhattan slum." Not geting any better GHA. But hey! that is social housing!

As long as it actually gets built - and it doesn't end up another 'nearlyproject' that gets canned at the 11th hour...
Posted by: rosscobhoy, Glasgow on 4:19pm Thu 28 Aug 08
Must be pretty easy to design a hotel these days. Just look about the area its being built in and make it blend in. Hey Presto! Big commission cheque.

ET posters should think themselves lucky... I tried noising up the horrible small-minded, mean-spirited, xenophobic, homophobic Daily Mail posters (in a perfectly polite way) earlier on but didn't even get the post up for it to be deleted...

Where "offensive and derogatory" are found, Fredo is never far away. Usually also close to "illiterate".

So Mr Purcell who is a great leader a wonderful person and head of the council. Yet this head of council has failed to get anyone else in the council to do their job? Seems a little bit of a contradiction...lol

The street whores will be replaced by upmarket call-girls direct to your room.

Is all this new building of new hotels in Glasgow absolutely necessary? We have the now empty (correct me if I'm wrong)Central Station Hotel deteriorating in Hope Street. the Central may be old but with renovation it could again become an upmarket hotel.

Why the need for £££millions to be spent on new hotels.

I'm sorry, I can't agree with most of the comments that seem to want Mr Purcell and our city fathers given knighthoods or elevated to Saints.

You only have to look back at some recent stories concerning Glasgow City Council, to see they are no better than a legalised version of the mob. Give Mr Purcell a vest, and we have our own Tony Soprano.

We truly have the best Councillors money can buy!
