Probe into more raids on bookies

POLICE are probing two more armed raids on bookies following a spate of attacks recently.

A hooded man held up a bookmakers in Glasgow's St Enoch Square on Saturday and just a day earlier a premises in Bothwell was raided.

The city centre robbery happened at 4.20pm at William Hill when a man threatened staff with a gun and demanded cash.

A three-figure sum was handed over, and the man fled towards the Clyde.

No-one was injured but the staff members were left shaken and upset.

Police said the man responsible is a white male, aged 35-40 years with a tanned complexion and stubble.

At the time of the robbery he was wearing a dark coloured jacket with the hood pulled up.

Meanwhile, investigations are continuing following an armed robbery at a Lanarkshire bookmakers in Main Street, Bothwell.

A masked man, believed to have a gun, entered the premises of McKenna Accountants at 12.40pm on Friday and threatened staff before fleeing with a four-figure sum.

He is described as being white, 20 to 25 years of age, 5ft 6in to 5ft 10in tall, with very short, light coloured hair.

He was wearing a light coloured jacket, blue jeans and dark coloured trainers.

Appealing for witnesses to come forward, Detective Constable Cameron Miller, from Hamilton CID, said: "Main Street and the surrounding area would have been busy at the time of the incident."

The Bothwell raid is not being linked to other recent robberies from bookmakers.

These imbeciles are causing far more grief than the few hundred pounds they generally manage to get is worth. The staff of course will be traumatised, the customers are now facing constantly locked toilets and the tills usually unable to pay out more than a £100 or two because cash levels are now kept low. They should remember that it's certainly not a victimless crime, they are being recorded on CCTV, and several years in jail are not worth it. Better to beg or sell the big issue, or better still, get a job.
