Our future is in their hands

by Vivienne Nicoll

MEET some of the 200 young recruits who have been signed up to keep Glasgow booming.

They are taking their first steps into work thanks to a pioneering scheme run by Glasgow City Council.

And today they met council leader Steven Purcell to celebrate their new start in life - and the part they will play in the continuing regeneration of the city.

They are the latest to be taken on by the council and City Building as apprentices.

The 60 apprentices for the council will work in a range of jobs, including horticulture, roadwork, business administration, youth work, information technology and cultural heritage.

The 140 City Building trainees will complete apprenticeships in traditional trades such as plumbers, joiners, bricklayers and electricians.

The programme offers high quality training for those aged 16 and over.

Mr Purcell said: "This is another step to get more people into work and offer them an apprenticeship.

"The more skilled trades people we have in the city, the easier it is to attract more investment and jobs. This is a win-win situation for Glasgow and everyone who lives here."

With £4.5billion of construction work under way or planned in the city, the apprenticeship scheme should leave Glasgow well prepared for the future.

Mr Purcell added: "We have an opportunity over the next few years, particularly with the Commonwealth Games coming, to secure apprenticeships for many more school leavers."

He said the 2014 Games would bring significant physical regeneration, increase tourism, job creation, and private and socially rented accommodation. The Athletes' Village, to be built in Dalmarnock, would be used for housing after the event.

Mr Purcell added: "Through opportunities like the apprenticeship places, we will give our young people the same start in life, the same opportunity our fathers and grandfathers received, when the shipyards, the steelworks, the pits and the mills were at their height and employing hundreds of thousands of people."

The Evening Times told in July of City Building's plans to hire 140 apprentices - double what it usually recruits in a year. It received 1400 applications for the posts.

The council has been running Skillseeker and modern apprenticeship schemes since 1996.

Courses run for 18 months to four years, with Skillseekers offered an SVQ Level 2 qualification and modern apprentices offered an SVQ Level 3.

About 95% of those completing the programme go on to find permanent jobs, many with the council.

Earlier this year, Mr Purcell announced every city school leaver in 2009 who qualified for an apprenticeship would be offered one as part of a £30million plan to prepare the city for the 2014 Games.

JOINER
FRANZ HAIDER, a 16-year-old from the East End, is starting a four-year joinery apprenticeship with City Building.

He left St Ambrose School, Coatbridge, at the end of fifth year and had always been interested in joinery, especially craft and design.

Franz applied for an apprenticeship with City Building and successfully got through the three-stage interview process, which included a practical skills test.

He is delighted to have been awarded an apprenticeship and is impressed at the opportunities within City Building.

"I have tried my best and feel really happy I have been successful," said Franz.

"I am looking forward to a career in carpentry and joinery and to working on site. I can't wait to work in houses, to give a good impression of myself and to do a good job for City Building."

GARDNER
GREEN-FINGERED Bianca Caldwell has landed her dream job in the Botanic Gardens.

The 18-year-old, who attended Whitehill Secondary School in Dennistoun, started on a city council vocational programme in September 2006, where she got involved in horticultural training.

She was also given support in numeracy, literacy and interview skills. That helped build her confidence and resulted in her winning a place on a council training programme the following year.

Bianca impressed course bosses and has now landed a three-year horticultural apprenticeship.

She said: "I love working in horticulture and have always wanted to get involved in this field.

"The apprenticeship will give me the chance to learn skills in a wide range of different areas such as nursery work, aquatic features and arboriculture."

YOUTH WORKER
JODIE MURPHY had just started working towards a Skillseekers SVQ in youth work when she was told of the death of her cousin.

The former St Roch's secondary pupil admits the tragedy hit her hard and she feared she would not complete the course which was part of another council-run scheme.

But thanks to the support she got from staff she reached her goal and is now an apprentice youth worker.

Jodie, 19, from Royston, said: "I know now that sometimes we need support.

"My goal is to become a qualified youth worker and without the support I was given I might not have completed my course and missed the chance to progress on to a modern apprenticeship.

"I enjoy working with young people - I know from personal experience that the kind of support youth workers provide can have a real, positive impact on people's lives.

"There are some vulnerable young people and this apprenticeship has given me the chance to progress into a career that will allow me to make a difference."

How interesting - the monkeys at ET are allowing us to comment on the clown Purcell and his attempts to persuade us that liebour are doing the right thing by Glasgow and at the same time we are not allowed to comment on Alex Salmond and the SNP government's bills to be introduced in order to improve things for Scotland and all Scots. Well quelle surprise but of course ET you still managed to get a comment or five from the check out chick Jamieson - ET you are a rubbish liebour rag - always have been always will be.

Same old trash... New Labour mince that things are going to change... jobs will come... tourists will come... social housing will come... these bungling monkeys have been in power in this city for 60 years and in that time Glasgow has went from a proud industrial powerhouse to an irrelevant wee nyaff of a city... just like Purcell is an irrelevant wee nyaff of a man!

Comical that you think anything the SNP suggests could improve Scotland!* They are the biggest joke (and embarrassment ) this country has seen in many a day.

PURCELL SAYS,,,,,,,,Mr Purcell added: "We have an,less over the next few years, particularly with the Commonwealth Games coming, to secure apprenticeships for many more school leavers."

He said the 2014 Games would bring significant physical regeneration, increase tourism, job creation, and private and socially rented accommodation. The Athletes' Village, to be built in Dalmarnock, would be used for housing after the event.
And if the comenwealth games were not coming there would be less apprentices, less opportunity never mind the whopping bill were landed with. Then he says The Athletes' Village will be used for social housing my a8re they,ll sell it to the highest bidder no doubt one of the many cronies they except illegal back handers from PURCELL must be removed so he has no part in any games and as syd says they have.... social housing will come... these bungling monkeys have been in power in this city for 60 years and in that time Glasgow has went from a proud industrial powerhouse to an irrelevant wee nyaff of a city... the shipyards babcock to name a few used to take thousands of apprentices!!!!!! a know a was one and another thing it was a 4 year apprentice ship not these made up 2 year shots

I beg to differ, I think the SNP (not that i voted for them) are doing a reasonably good job. They could be doing better, but on the whole i think they have done a better job then labour would have done.

They have taken some bold decisions on Energy Policy and are working to improve the Health Service and more importantly they are listening to the public more than Labour ever did.

Council bashing aside, can people like Sydney, Fredo and Butterfly not just be happy for the young people who have worked hard to gain an apprecticeship? Which i can tell you is no easy task.

You will probably be the same people who come on here and complain that the Council isnt doing enough to encourage our young people to work, and will say the Council dont provide enough services.

Read the comments of the young people interviewed, they are delighted to be in employment and have some sort of secure plan for the future.

Instead of using every excuse to be negative, why dont you give us all a break and and commend the pro-active youngsters who are willing to go out and work.

C'mon Ev. Times, - Please stick to news and interest stories. Too much space given to being a P.R. organ for Glasgow City Council!

I am delighted for the apprentices, but it,s no thanks to the headline loving council that they are getting jobs it,s because of a skills shortage when was the lasttime they started as many apprentices???

An apprenticeship should insist on at least an SVQ level 3. The SVQ level 2 is exceptionally basic.

Personally I think a City & Guilds qualification in any trade is far superior to any SVQ or NVQ certificate. These were brought in, around 20 years ago, to dumb down the levels required for your tradesmen.

Also the loss of so many excellent technical colleges hasn't helped. The new 'universities' aren't really interested in vocational skills and cannot attract the quality of staff required in these areas. Shame.

Isn't it sad that we have to commend youngsters who are 'willing' to go out to work? It shouldn't be a case of being willing, it should be a case of necessity for them for many reasons.

Just shows how low we have dropped as a society. Time the benefits system was overhauled - take it back 40 years and youngsters will then hopefully realise, once they're able to drink and vote, then they're responsible enough to pay their own way within society.

Did Darren Mirren get an apprenticeship? Or could he not find the City Chambers? (Maybe the decsription of the big building in the toon wi' they two big lions ootside frightened him).

I'm not quite sure what point you are trying to make here? It may be lost in all the punctuation and spelling mistakes.

But anyway, my cousin was one of the young school leavers who was actively looking for a joinery apprenticeship this spring/summer. He eventually got one, but from all the effort I saw he put into finding a placement in a slowing area of the economy, I felt that he should be commended.

To Subrosa, perhaps "willing" may have been the wrong word choice, but I still stand by my view.

He got the job all by himself. You know that process where you apply for a job, get an interview, and then they give the position to the most suitable candidate.

Glad I could clear that up for you.

Fair enough its a good thing for the folk getting the apprenticeships but hasnt this been announced umpteen times already.

Surely the ET could do better than being a propoganda rag for Glasgow labour party.

Mr Purcell's further booming project........didn'
t we have a booming financial sector thanks to him. And now its all gone belly up not a word of a replacement?!?! Ok I never believed Glasgow labour had anything to do with companies coming to the city but they certainly suggested they did have, Mr purcell's face constantly in this rag. Now they all go one by one and not a word? Should be full of praise for this but it difficult that only time this mob are about is when something good is occurring.
