Hypocrites. All political parties are the same. SNP are as bad as Labour. Get rid of all parties and all politicians.
Then Sydney will have nothing to moan about and be forced into getting a life.

Even in terms of the 'Kirk Broadfoots' of the New Labour party, MSP Frank McAveety is one of the most talentless, mediocre attention-seekers ever to 'grace' the pages of the Evening Times.
The struggling politician represents an area with some of the worst social, economic and educational problems in the whole of the UK, but here he is more worried about whether someone is kicked out of a minor city admin post... speaks volumes for the 'man'.
[bold]Come on Councillor Hanif, chin up and don't let these useless drama monkeys get you down![/bold]

Why Hanif was even chosen to be an SNP candidate/councillor is unbelievable.
Anybody with any self respect would have resigned immediately to protect the SNP.

I love the way the ET change the goal posts when it suits them. E.g. they state 'Meanwhile, the row took a fresh twist today after councillor Hanif's 17-year-old daughter Noor reportedly wrote to Alex Salmond calling on him to be thrown out of the party.'
The word 'reportedly' is very similiar to 'allegedly'. Who is passing this rubbish onto the ET. Dont you just love the fact that the reporter has went out of his way to get a quote from all the other political parties?!?
When clear evidence was presented to the ET regarding Glasgow City Council renting out property for £50 per year to a 'charity' only for this 'charity' to sub-let it to other charities making a tidy profit of nearly £100,000 they wouldn't touch it incase they were 'liable'. However they seem to have no problem printing allegation after allegation regarding the SNP.
I am in no way condoning the actions of this Councillor however you have to agree that he has been hounded and now this tabloid is resorting to bringing his entire family into the public eye. I thought this was the action of trash sunday tabloids; clearly not!

[quote]Yesterday the Scottish Conservatives issued a statement confirming Mr Lardner had been reinstated as candidate for the constituency of North Ayrshire and Arran.[/quote]
Interesting to note that Mr Lardner hasn't rated the same front page vitriol that Cllr Hanif has been subjected to. Mr Lardner, named Ian Smith, who was regarded a white supremacist, as his political hero. He also said that Powell's far-right warnings about immigration had "in a small way come true".
So ok for him to still seek public office then?

Why is this paper hell bent on trying to get this man removed?
As I recall, the incident took place in Pakistan, now is that not another country at the other side of the world for which their affairs have little to do with what goes on here?
Secondly, I would claim this paper is being racist towrds this man for his actions as they never ocurred here, but in Pakistan, people fire off guns even to celebrate somebody's birthday, gun use is that common - because its not here, people believe he is some sort of terrorist?
What a load of guff, even so, he would have to be tried through the courts - but for what? An incident that happened in another country?
This is more of a laugh than it is serious.
If a bunch of councillors were to go to Saudi and walk about the streets drunk, be found by the authorities and were later whipped for their actions, would that be considered racist?
No - these are what you are accustomed to when arriving in these countries.
Here, muppets were trying to ban Christmas and yet, this guy is to be removed from office because of what goes on in his country?
Seems a bit confusing and rather hypocritica coming from those who have contributed to screwing up this country
Pathetic to be honest.

The ET has lost the plot. You have to ask what they have against this guy. It's a joke. Glasgow is so full of self interest it's a disgrace. This guy got it wrong and he has apologised. He hasn't done anything illegal and his error was before he became a councillor. The ET should explain why they are after him - is it the colour of his skin. I remember the stuff that was posted here when this all kicked off and the ET was very very slow to remove anything.

Also, its not what a child said, the child happens to be a straight 'A' 17 year old, obviously old enough to vote and intelligent enough to have her own say! And the video evidence speaks for itself, regardless of what anyone states. The story was in the daily record, and they didn't say 'Allegedly' there.

This doesn't have anything to do with race, Im Asian and I agree with the papers 100%. It is illegal for a 5 year old to fire an AK47 weapon in Pakistan, but you can get away with it there. Hanif took advantage of that for his foolish and irresponsible entertainment. Only last week a 5 year old in Birmingham shot her 18 month toddler, when her father was playing with airgund and turned around for a second. If it had been an AK47 probably would have shot everyone there. There is a major moral issue here, if somebody is in the public eye they should set an example. Instead he tried at first to defend his actions, only when he was repremanded did he issue a brief meaningless apology.

Just a quick observation...I've given up reading the ET as it's completely amateurish, biased, and a total waste of money. I do 'read' it online, as the debate that goes on amongst you 'posters' is fantastic - informative, sometimes infuriating, but always entertaining. However, recently I've noticed what I consider to be a bit of a 'pot' and 'kettle' situation going on...it is obvious that Sydney Meriwether isn't Purcell's biggest fan, and if he leaves posts containing such opinions then fair enough, agree, disagree, whatever. However recently certain people have been leaving comments all over the place regarding Sydney's opinions BEFORE he's even commented, effectively goading him into saying what you seem to claim you want him to shut up about. It's all over the articles on here, and I have to say...if you're going to critisise what he does, should you really be doing the same? Should you really be leaving comments about him all over a website and using any opportunity to have a go at him before he's even commented, if you object to the fact he turns every comment he leaves round to the same subject? Just seems rather hypocritical to me.
And before anyone has a go at me, I don't know the guy, frequently disagree with him and I'm not particularly sticking up for him; it's just an observation I've made.
Sorry if that isn't quite as eloquent as it should be...allegedly Thursday is the new Friday, so my brain thinks it's Saturday

Lets not forget that this is the guy who is a slum landlord, mistreating tenants who are taking him to court. He was also campaigning for funding to raise money to fix up an area, but he failed to admit until was caught out by the papers, that he had property there and would have profited. His been abusing his position as councillor for some time. He is also in the papers for serious complaints to the health care commission regarding mistreatment of patients in his nursing home, which he couldn’t answer. Lets face it, his a nasty piece of work and his making the SNP look bad. The sooner they let him go it’ll be best for all including him I think.

Because many of us agree with the this paper. How many times have you taken your kids to Afghanistan, blind-folded them so they have no idea where they are, and shown them how to fire guns? Not exactly a normal thing to do, it it?

That was my point - But you mention Afghanistan? You trying to instill some paranoia vibe into me?
I know of someone who fought in Afghanistan - which may not be all that far from Pakistan, however, it is the affairs of another country, not ours, if he done it here, he should go, but he didn't and it appears he apologised for any inconvenience that was brought upon the heads of stste here.
This paper is clearly a labour paper with very little imagination to publish good reading material - its best efforts is to report on cats who get stuck up trees or slag anything off that isn't labour - like Labour are the best thing for Scotland
Of course, this is why we have the higest rates of depression, alcohol and drug abuse anywhere in Europe on top of people here being the fattest and unhealthiest people in Europe.

The Missing City: "Why is this paper hell bent on trying to get this man removed?" Because many of us agree with the this paper. How many times have you taken your kids to Afghanistan, blind-folded them so they have no idea where they are, and shown them how to fire guns? Not exactly a normal thing to do, it it?
would claim this paper is being racist towrds this man for his actions as they never ocurred here, but in Pakistan, people fire off guns even to celebrate somebody's birthday, gun use is that common - because its not here, people believe he is some sort of terrorist?
What a load of guff, even so, he would have to be tried through the courts - but for what? An incident that happened in another country?
This is more of a laugh than it is serious.

In fairness to the high quality, politcally balanced North Britis media; at least they are consistent. They DID NOT:
* print pictures of a Scottish-born British PM sitting in a mobile tank, smiling behind the barrel of an anti-personnel gun with a huge smile on his face, as a highly questionable image of visual support for frontline British troops forced to fight in overseas wars of questionable legitimacy;
* they did not and have not run dozens of pictures and online 'live' footage of the US Republican VP candidate, laughing and joking whilst firing off round after round of automatic weapon fire; all the while printing positive reportage around this individual;
* they did not print largely positive stories in the middle of August 'celebrating' Scotland's Glorious 12th hunting season, as if this is totally normal mainstream behaviour.
Oh wait a minute.......they did. Double standards? I don't think so as you'd need to have a baseline to begin with. But then again; Hanif is Asian, it was in Pakistan, and it was a Kalashnikov...and we all know what that infers.
ET and Daily Record - setting new lows in balanced reporting.

Well said SunnyJim, I'm sick and tired of the sanctimonious attitude towards guns in this country. Despite the handgun ban the ruling elite and other so-called VIP's are allowed gun protection while the rest of us are left defenceless with no means of protecting ourselves against multiple and/or knife weilding attackers.

MSP McAveety. seems to have labourite friends in the ET...
Maybe we should have a report on McCain's running mate in the good ol! USA.. Or er! G.Bush
I wonder if the ET reporters are leading this family whilst the adults are split.
Like many others I have a dislike for private landlords who own/let property for use that is in disrepair.
It should be remembered Labour and Tory polititions in Glasgow and elsewhere have been into this racket for many years ...
Illegal activities within Glasgow district Council. Some in retirement, some dead, and yes some still making dosh...Illegally.

Sorry,
Please ET get the finger out much of it I can remember since the 50's until present day.
I don't believe this is just lazy journalism.
More likely protecting rackateers..

i wonder how many of the conservative/labour/
lib dem party members who take part in game shooting with 12 bore shotguns and have introduced their children (boys and girls) to shooting by letting them fire .410 shotguns at birds. perhaps even letting them fire 0.22 or 0.270 rifles (deadly at a mile). are they to be similarly dismissed from office? i am aware that a Klasnikov is a military weapon but you are still as dead whether it is a machine gun bullet or a shotgun that hits you. if one of our politicians with famiuly visits Mrs Palin she has a fair range of guns/rifles for "huntin". or is that OK? smell of hypocrisy in the air?

But I think shooting guns in a CONTROLLED environment under supervision of professionals is not quite the same thing as shooting a 600 rounds per minute weapon in a lawless area on the Afghan border and pointing the loaded weapons at each other... Ummm lets get things in to perspective.

As far as I am concerned I would not want this man representing me nor any member of my family. This guy has clearly been a slum landlord for many years. Even his own children dont want anything to do with him. He is a multi millionaire and its been reported that even his wife and children are soon to be put out their family home. I hope he pays his share of CSA money. Lets be honest would you buy a second hand car from this guy?

This whole business is nothing to do with slum landlords or firing guns in Pakistan.
It's to do with a woman angry and in the middle of an obviously antagonistic divorce.
This will be the same woman who gave a glowing report about the man when they were together.
As for involving a 17 year old in her personal problems, the mother should be ashamed. I don't care if the 17 year old is a straight A pupil or a C pupil. Yes she has the right to write to Alex Salmond, same as all of us, but the letter has been so obviously generated from her mother's vindictiveness.
So, two lessons to learn here. Do not use the children of a broken marriage as pawns. Be aware some women will stop at nothing to ensure the man who has humiliated them is dragged into the gutter.
I have no knowledge of these people. I am just a person who has witnessed this type of behaviour many times in my life. Leave your children out of it.
The man should resign now. That's what they want and they'll get it in the end. The SNP have judged fairly in my opinion. Yesterday, MSPs refused to ensure Wendy Alexander was punished for breaking laws. The labour party did nothing about it but lie and lie. At least the SNP have been open.

Was it 70 votes that decided on Wendy the guilty yesterday.???
Everyone of them should be ashamed. Only those voters with low morals would ever think of voting for any of them..
Surely doubt on the 70 must exist as to their reason. Many of them guilty of misconduct?

It doesn't matter how corrupt and devious our own leaders and officials are - that doesn't matter according to most posters - even if their actions or behaviour was ever printed, people would still not believe it, because British Brainwashing has left people with their heads so far up the Bournville Boulevards that they can't see the woods for the trees and that all our leaders and officials past and presenmt who are of labour origin are correct, honest and they are the right people to take us forward.
I certainly smell a good few rats.

Subrosa, you may be right concerning his wife I have no Idea. However, concerning his behaviour and his position of trust being a city councillor in Glasgow, he does have to be seen and act properly with his tenants. He was on all these committees and all the time he was a total hypocrite. You have got to remember a lot of Pakistanis and Muslims treat woman very badly indeed. I just hope he treats his wife and family when it comes to a settlement. She is entitled to half wealth. He needs to abide by Scots law now.

It's up to the SNP how it deals with its millionaire elected representatives.
But just as we found with Mister Souter and the disappearing policy on regulating public transport, money talks in the SNP. They are for sale to the highest bidder.
He's a very wealthy property developer who is reputedly free with his cash (though not when it comes to paying maintenance for his wife and children). They have clearly decided that they need him, and his money, in place, more than they need to make the point that guns aren't big or clever.
It will be up to the electors to decide whether to re-elect him, if he's vain enough to stand in the 2011 elections and the SNP are greedy enough to put him up as a candidate.
Meantime, for goodness sake let's hope he doesn't get to sit on the community safety, social work or education committees, or on the Strathclyde Police Board!

Not funny, though. You don't get to be a millionaire property developer by being nice with tenants.

The thing that strikes me about this story is how so many people commenting are disputing the right of the newspaper to comment abour it, and to expose what he's done.
Irregardless of the rights and wrongs of what he did, the facts are that -
- this guy is a city councillor, who has been identified with senior figures in the SNP leadership like Alex Salmond and Nicola Sturgeon
- this guy is notorious for being a landlord to overcrowded Roma people in Govanhill in what could accurately be described as a slum close
- this guy is a millionaire who has made his money in the property field but withholds maintenance from his wife who is about to be kicked out of the family home
- this guy took his kids in a van with blacked out windows to North West Frontier Province, just a few miles from the Afghan border, in a very lawless area, and proceeded to get himself filmed firing AK-47 automatic weaponry, contrary to the law of Pakistan(whatever he says about it).
And if he'd done it in the UK he would get the jail, no two ways about it!
These are all matters of public interest and worth reporting. Brought together, it is a huge story. And it has been covered as such. There is really is no case for SNP fans to say "nothing to report - move along here". But that is precisely what they are doing.
Anyone who doesn't have an opinion about Cllr. Hanif, or who thinks his various doings ought not to be fully reported, must be very odd.
And the SNP have decided he's a fit and proper person to represent them on Glasgow City Council (after two months is up). That is also a news story.

Everyone seems to be getting a bit carried away here.
Let's agree two things here.
What Cllr Hanif did was wrong, no excuses, he should be punished, no-one should be trying to defend him - particularly not by comparing him to the Republican VP candidate! Please! I would hope the SNP's standards are somewhat higher than the GOP's!
However there is also an extremely nasty personal vendetta going on which for some reason the ET seems to be taking part in, or at least running whatever lines they are fed.
I expect it will all end up in court at some point.

Johnny punchclock you are a case in point, the whole tenor of your comment is sleazy and your allegations unsubstantiated. He has been 'identified' with Alex Salmond and Nicola Sturgeon - yes by you and Frank McAveety. He has not been identified as providing overcrowded property. The flat he rented out was clean and not overcrowded according to the ET however it is an area where other flats are overcrowded and the close itself is in need of repair. Etc etc. And then earlier you imply that 'money talks in the SNP. They are for sale to the highest bidder.' E.g the millionaire Cllr Hanif. Though if Cllr Hanif really is the millionaire monster you make him out to be he could sue you for what you have been saying.
If your aim is to discredit the SNP or him it is not effective because it is overkill and makes us all think what is this really about? And I do wonder who Cllr Hanif has crossed, don't think even a vengeful ex wife could organise this level of attack on one councillor.

HGlaswegian, I don't think there's a personal vendetta, and I don't see why any of this needs to end up in court. But I do think part of the consequences of a public figure behaving in the ways he has behaved is that the public discuss it.
It's time for him to put things right.
He needs to sort out things for his wife and children - make sure they get to stay on in their home and sort out decent maintenance.
He needs to sort out the situation for his tenants - make sure their home is a palace and that they aren't overcrowded.
And he really needs to step down from the Council and let someone less tainted with automatic weapons get a chance.
Is that really too much to ask?

[/quote] HGlaswegian, I'm sorry you feel that way about my comments. Please let me deal with your criticisms in turn.
He has been photographed with Alex Salmond and Nicola Sturgeon - the local MSP knows Mr Hanif well, parts of her Govan constituency overlap his Govanhill ward, and the councillor was a key ally in her 2007 election victory - and it is well known that he has given them advice and spoken at conferences with them. These are readily provable facts and there's nothing discreditable about it - do you think there is? I would be very happy to offer these persons my own advice should they require it.
He earns £500-a-month for a two-bedroomed flat from a family of five Romanians in Westmoreland Street, which surely counts as overcrowding, and rakes in thousands of pounds from flats he owns in Glasgow and overseas.
And he is a millionaire, in a party where Mister Souter, the multi-millionaire Stagecoach Bus baron, managed to get the SNP conference policy of regulating the bus industry overturned in return for a payment of half a million pounds. I'm not saying that he's a monster. Just that he is a millionaire property developer. And I imagine that this was an element in the extraordinary decision by SNP bosses to only suspend him for a few weeks.
In an earlier comment I suggested some simple steps he could take which would greatly improve his standing among his fellow citizens. I only have his best interests, and those of the community, in mind. You really ought not to be so cynical.

Its absolutely bizarre that he hasn't resigned yet. This continued bad publicity is doing the SNP so much damage, if he had any sense or allegiance to the party he would have stepped down ages ago. He doesn't need the money, he is supposedly a millionaire property developer who has contributed lots of money to the SNP, maybe this is why they're reluctant to fire him. What has he achieved for the community, nothing, it was reported that he spends most of his time on holiday in Pakistan.

He needs to abide by Scots law now.[/quote]
Ross I'm not going to be dragged into a discussion about differing cultures. There are plenty men and women on this island who don't treat their partners well either so who I am to judge.
As for you saying he was a hypocrite, well it doesn't surprise me. Long, long ago, when I worked in Glasgow, I can assure you every councillor was a hypocrite - you still see the results (or non-results in most cases) of their hypocrisy when you look around. That was in the days most of the council were labour and expected to be treated as gods. Nothing they did was questioned. It was the same story in Dundee where they wrecked a city.
Hopefully, in the very near future, we will have councillors who do the work for the benefit of their electorate and not for money. The last straw was giving councillors good salaries. I know 4 in my area who still work full-time and yet claim full councillors' salaries.
I digress. This councillor ought to go. He doesn't have the genuine interest of his electorate at heart.

No person in their right mind would take their kids to fire guns! This man is not fit to be a parent never mind represent a constituency. If he was an unemployed dad from a council estate he would have been crucified by now. The SNP should get rid of him out now or the voters will start to turn against them.

Hmmm sorry that might have been two questions!

Why doesn't the ET promote 'fresh calls to kick out all the scum-councillors' who have been travelling the world on our expense to look at flowers!! Aye I bet they like to keep that quiet. When I contacted GCC regarding this they tried to hit me with some irrelevant web-page.
Why dont we hound out ALL the scum. Eg The Deputy Lord Provost, A Stewart (Labour). Never to be seen. Infact when a public meeting was called in the Springburn area earlier this year (his own constituency) he claimed he was at a Labour Conference therefor couldnt attend. When this was looked at it turns out he wasn't there. Turns out he was at an Old-Firm Game. [bold]START REPORTING REAL STORIES AND ISSUES B CURRIE AND GIVE A BALANCED VIEW TO YOUR READERS.[/bold]

I smell something more sinister here, don't think I would be allowed to print what most of us think. Never fired a real gun so I would need to be trained in an emergency.

Its not fair to the constituents in the ward that they have to put up with councillor bang bang, after all the bad press reports about him over the past months (even before the AK47 incident). No one wants him around, not the MSP's, not even a lot of senior SNP officials (who instigated the complaints against him). [bold]He has tainted the image of the party, if he had any allegiance to the SNP or any self-respect he would have resigned already and not hung around like a bad smell.[/bold]

the question was asked about the queen being asked to abdicate because she was using a gun on her own property shooting at birds which every body knows will be on tables in restaurants and households, even if she does abdicate, it does not alter the fact that the glasgow people would be stuck with a councillor who is absolutely useless...a chancer in the highest degree, byee mr hanif before you get deeper in the mire..... cheerio, cheerio, cheerio.

Sorry, may be I missed this, but
WHY did he take his kids on such a journey? WHAT compelled him to show them how to fire such a weapon?
Not quite a trip to disney land.
Don't really want this guy making decisions that effect my life. Go and Go now.
