PROTESTERS fighting a plan for an aerial adventure course in Glasgow today condemned vandals who wrecked a similar site.

The Go Ape adventure park at Aberfoyle was targeted by people who sawed through steel cables on a 150ft-high zip slide.

The Perthshire site has been forced to close since the weekend incident just days after permission was given for a new site at Glasgow's Pollok Park It is thought those behind the vandalism back a campaign against the controversial plans . FFP - believed to stand for Freedom For Pollok - was sprayed on signs at Aberfoyle.

Campaigner Bill Fraser, spokesman for Save Pollok Park, said: "We condemn vandalism of any sort, particularly if it could put lives at risk. We have never campaigned against Go Ape as an activity, just its location which we think is unsuitable.

"People who carry out such violent acts have no place in our campaign."

Central Scotland Police have launched an investigation.

The vandals are thought to have struck at night when the park was closed - the second time in a month that it has been targeted.

Go Ape boss Tristan Mayhew apologised for any inconvience to customers.

The damage was discovered when staff carried out a routine inspection and repairs are now under way.

Just last week campaigners in Glasgow vowed to take legal action in an attempt to stop Go Ape going ahead at Pollok Park.

Their warning came after the Scottish Government announced it would not intervene in the saga.

An earlier decision by the council to grant permission had been referred to ministers, with campaigners hoping that would at least result in a public inquiry.

But the decision to take no action clears the way for Glasgow City Council to plough ahead with the plan for rope bridges, ladders and zip lines from trees in the park's North Wood.

Protest group Save Pollok Park, which collected 5000 names on a petition, said it would got to courts to get the decision overturned.

Even constituency MSP Nicola Sturgeon, who is the Deputy First Minister, vowed to double her efforts to have the plan stopped.

Ministers could have chosen to "call in" the application which could have resulted in a public inquiry and, ultimately, the plan being kicked out.

But instead they passed it back to the council, raising no objections.

I don't see any reason why SPP should feel the need to distance themselves from this nonsense - it's quite obviously the actions of idiots and SPP are NOT idiots, they are concerned community activists.

Tis stupid act does highlight a major concern though: that of how can any Go Ape development at Pollok Park be realistically protected - 12-foot high security fences topped with razor-wire perhaps... now that would be a lovely site from the Burrell!!!

BTW would the 'Reader Alex Glass' who took the photie in today's 'opinion' section be the same 'Alex Glass' who sat on the council Planning Committee and voted through the Go Ape plan... if it is then did he do it on 'council time', whereby we would have a situation where Glasgow taxpayers are paying for photographs to appear in the Evening Times???

Cindy,

Does it matter when he took it - I think it's a pretty picture.

I have it on good authority that Steven Pucell has also, on a number of occasions - taken photos of things.

Perhaps you might want to see him 'birched' for doing so.

Cindy - cooncilers have lives too where thaty are perfectly entitled to do what they like (take yer SNP boy in with the AK47) - be that taking photos or firing a machine gun.
They aint just robots for you to gripe at all day fae yer library computer.

Grumpy.

Yes, what kind of things... and would this be related to them doing things that they are "perfectly entitled to do what they like"?

Free Pollok Park?? From what exactly?

The hippies totally failed 13 years ago in their bid to stop it being cut in half by a motorway (lets face it - far worse than turning a section of it into an adventure playground).

So what's their problem?

You're on dodgy ground there mate.

A while back I asked how many of the SPP brigade now happliy use the M77 between Dumbreck and Cowglen. Got into all sorts of trouble then. Good luck.

The folk campaigning against Go Ape in Pollok are hardly a "bunch of hippies" and I would reckon that very few of them were involved in the M77 campaign. The M77 campaign is irrelevant to o Ape in Pollok, but just seems to provide a convenient excuse to slag off people who actually care about what happens to their city by those who are incapable of caring about anything apart from their own selfish little lives.

Of course. Not that they don't have a valid argument whether it be a motorway or whatever - I was just making the point that the damage caused by this development is a drop in the ocean caused by what the M77 and everything that went with it did to Pollok Park.

Why the surprise at the vandalism at Aberfoyle?, it is just a pre-emptive strike prior to the vandalism about to be inflicted in Pollok Park by Glasgow City Councillors.

Diper is spelt DIAPER. Get yourself an American dictionary.

And I use the M77 every week.

It's a pity that people here seem to have lost sight of the issue. I would never condone vandalism but it seems hardly surprising that when the public exhaust all legal means to stop a project in their city which seems to be breaking the law itself that they would resort to this sort of thing.
As someone who opposes the commercial development of Pollok's North Woods I wonder why 'Go Ape' seems to have been given such an easy time by the press. Every time this story comes up the Council is interviewed, the protesters are interviewed, but nobody seems to see fit to ask 'Go Ape' themselves how they feel as an 'enviromentally friendly' company about 5000 protesters, building on an important archeological site, felling trees and going against the wishes of both the landowners and the National Trust. Why has no-one put these points to them?
The answer would presumably be 'no comment'...
