I actually feel sorry for Steven Purcell now: it's quite obvious that if he had anything [bold]materially good[/bold] to say about REAL achievements in this city then he would be telling us about it in his own inimitable, uneducated way... however all we get is a monotonous muttering about AIMS, BIDS, PLANS, etc. etc.
[bold]Remember the Purcell PLAN to save Glasgow post offices from the bungling incompetence of UK New Labour???[/bold] Of course, not one post office in Glasgow was saved by our decrepit city council, even though Purcell waded in with the usual amazing Purcell PLAN to save our post offices crap!!!

He said: "We are proud that Glasgow is known as the Dear Green Place.
"We have a number of public parks which we are enormously proud of.
So why are you selling it off then Mr Purcell?

WHAT???? Are you feeling OK Sydney? In fact, is this the REAL Sydney?
I was actually looking forward (for some bizarre reason) to some Purcell bashing comments from you Sydney.
I have to say, I am a little disappointed.
Anyway, looks like another slow news day for the Labour Daily Newsletter.

Yeah yeah yeah, spin spin and more spin. If Steven is so concerned about the quality of our green space, why is ElderPark Park a total disgrace. The local community in this area have been campaigning for a few years now for a programme of improvements to the park which have never materialised.
In fact a council backed lottery bid was withdrawn at the last minute as it would have required council match funding.
This is nothing more than steven wanting to keep the spin going,

Glascow city council have absolutely no concern for green space in the city, they are only interested in generating cash. One small example was the recently suggested developement of a £30 million hotel on the current car parking area next to the City halls on Ingram street. Described as 'waste ground that should be developed' by a council spokesperson, it is in fact quite an attractive green space with semi mature trees.

Unlike almost every other major city in the EU, Glasgow appears not to have noticed that some people might like to cycle around the city without running the gauntlet of heavy traffic. I'll believe Mr Purcell's claims when it starts building a few cycle lanes.

I actually think that Glasgow is really well positioned to green (re-green?) itself. There's already a great legacy of investment in parks and other public space.
Sadly, though the problem would seem to be peoples' disregard for their respecting their own environment. So, that would need to be sorted out first. And what are the chances of that?

[italic]The programme aims to develop cycle routes, walkways and green spaces in areas blighted by deprivation and industrial closures.
The Glasgow and Clyde Valley Green Network said the project hopes to raise the quality of life for thousands of people.[/italic]
This effectively means that any part of the city that was ruined as a result of 50's and 60's planning and any site which onced housed a factory will never see another building or community ever again.
Never a better time to remove yourself from the city population figures then.
Most of the north side (as well as the east end) of the city is consumed in greenery whereas 40 years ago, these areas contained buildings and people.
Sheer wasteage of land and an absolute joke for attempting the ambition of one of Europe's leading cities.
And the next smart plan is.... Probably another motorway, going.... somewhere.... anywhere.... will bring economic benefits and help Glasgow floruish further blah blah.
Could be a plan for.... 500 new homes on a patch of land that is served by no amenities and a mile to the nearest bus stop and it will be a new area with nothing except houses so future generations from those who were from Post War crapholes can further slide down the ranks in society to be sneered upon.
This place is dire, there is plenty of green space, and Purcell wants to give us more of it.
We will end up looking like the most de-urbanised, unhealthiest and crappiest city in Europe when we compare ourselves to the culturally vibrant cities that exist elsewhere - that includes those with top class public transport, which Glasgow and its controllers past and present are allergic to.
Very poor indeed - what a place this really is when you take away all the Labour Gloss of years gone by.

I for one could never understand why a load of people who were exported from their inner city communities, could go an vote for a party who gave their areas nothing, a Corporation who had no money for repirs and done nothing to counteract the rapid decline in population, employnment and the mass declining state of the city as the Labour government (with a little help from the tories) was hell bent in demolishing anything that was Victorian.
We have today a city that is largely devoid of any cultural beauty, most of it is kept within the confines of the city and the west end as places like Laurieston with the Georgian palaces and Cowcaddens with its large greek style buildings were wiped.
All the famous works and buildings which mad Glasgow one of the wealthiest city in the world, we have now very little to show for its past achievements.
Thats how the unimaginitive Labour party believes that we can all look at the future by creating more green spaces.
Amazing stuff eh? And at what cost?
Continued decline no doubt - more of the same - largely a dull, depressing city outside the touristy bits - somehow, Labour voters love this as this has been the norm for many years.

Scotland can vote Labour (or the SNP for that matter) all it wants - but ultimately Middle England will always decide our fate.

In turn, Scotland becomes banana republic with Glasgow being the principal shanty town.
That would be the realistic outcome of being gimped by English votes.
Come to think of it, thats happened already - I suppose Scotland, it has nothing to lose as a country - moreso as it already has been plundered and robbed of its wealth and standing, which will never be given a moments thought under future Westminster governments, for however long this country wants to be raped by British law and Government to make us Carbon Copies of what you see in Liverpool and Inner City London.
I guess that was Tony Blair's vision of us all being the same.
Scotland can vote Labour (or the SNP for that matter) all it wants - but ultimately Middle England will always decide our fate.

people can not use the cycle paths/walkways we already have in glasgow, as soon as you leave the public areas you are accosted by drunks junkies and neds so why not get areas we already have cleaned up maintained and lighting put up before tackling any new ones.

Bits of tollcross Park covered in broken bottles on Sunday. glasgow Green better than it used to be but spoikt by so many events being held there restricting access and churning up the green areas. and the blue bin recycling scheme; no blue bins here in gallowgate

there is probably green grass under all the beer bottles, bricks, weans nappies, needles, chippie bags, wine bottles, buckfast bottles, protest papers of the ..go ape proposal in pollock park(once a DEAR GREEN PLACE,ooh one way to make glasgow green is ....bring the green rubbish wheelies which is supplied by the council and place them in the beautiful parks....but then again they have to be fireproof and chained to a cement block for fear of being set on fire or damaged( get hints from zoo keepers how to run the parks so that they will not be tottaled)
