Hunt for heavy metal at festival

FESTIVAL-GOERS visiting an Ayrshire town were subjected to mobile metal detector scans by British Transport Police.

Operation Shield saw 51 people scanned at Largs Railway Station last Friday - the weekend of the town's Vikingar Festival.

A spokesman said the aim of the operation was to find anyone who was carrying a knife or another offensive weapon.

One person was arrested for a breach of the peace but no knives were detected.

Passengers who were scanned had to walk through an airport-style metal detector.

Chief Inspector Alex McGuire said: "These metal detectors have already proved to be an extremely useful additional tool in detecting and deterring anyone who thinks they can carry weapons on the rail network."
