I can see all sorts of protests happening because of this ill thought out idea. also i can see legitimate [bold]squatting[/bold] being used as a form of protest. How long as the council owned "The Briggait" remained empty for? A good decade? If the council cant lease out The Briggait to retailers then how hard will it be for Paddy's to be leased out in the middle of quiet bit of Glasgow? I would say to people out there a good way to highlight these issues would be to use squatting has a form of protest over this. At least [bold]squatters[/bold] would use the properties more effectively than the council has over the last 20 years.

Any other city would be doing it's best to preserve their last existing street market.
Not the insulated deep pocketed slugs of the new labour bureaucracy. These parasites have no emotional connection to our city and this is one more example of their contempt for its citizens.
They know what's best for you, a nice new shopping center combined with car park, built with bricks shipped from England and not a window anywhere.
Plenty of scope there to get their big fat bloated snouts into the trough there'll be a few holiday cottages in Ireland bought on the back of this.
Glasgow, where tradition means nothing in the face of money to be made by the most corrupt and inept city council on this island.

[italic]Sir, you started brilliantly and only got better![/italic]
In support of your last point, that Glasgow City Council is the most "corrupt and inept city council on this island", may I offer as evidence a quote from a 'hidden' article in yesterday's edition in this, the finest evening newspaper in the country:
[quote]GLASGOW is still the worst authority in Britain for collecting council tax.
The city topped a league table of 400 UK councils with almost £22million of uncollected money.
[bold]It means Glasgow has had the worst record for council tax collection in Scotland for the last seven years[/bold].[/quote]
So not only is this decrepit council destroying the cultural heritage of our city, it is also failing in its core, pivotal function.

could we not be like other cities and maybe have a large covered market? There'e nough empty buildings that could be used for something like this. Markets are the highlights in a lot of tourist guides to a lot of cities. Or do we just want everyone going to generic shopping centres with surly characterless 'traders' and nice shiny tiles?

[bold]Cultural Heritage????[/bold] Don't make me laugh - it's a grotty, crime ridden eyesore, buried away down a corner with hardly any footfall, so away from the "Z" that shoppers are not going to make the walk down the equally unloved and underpopulated Saltmarket or the bleak southern reaches of Stockwell St. Probably one of the key reasons why the Briggait failed. Most of my adult life I've worked in the centre of town and can probably count on one hand how many times I've ventured down there on foot.
Anyway - as far as a street market is concerned....isn't that what the Barras is meant to be for??? Can't they simply move there instead?

I'm probably going to flamed for this but: I have lived across the road from Paddy's from 1995. When I moved in it was a thriving market and there were no problems with it. At least, I didn't see any. Every night the traders packed up all their stuff and the place was quite clean by about 6ish or so. Now it's a dump. I also read that there are drugs and sales of illegal merchandise going on. So, if the traders who have been there a long time are devastated at its closure, why didn't they get together when the problems started and DO something about it. After all, if there were drugs and illegal goods being sold in other trading communities such as St Enoch's or the Buchanan centre (I don't like either centre), the traders there wouldn't have stood for it. Comments?

The fact is that the [bold]traders have made numerous representations to our decrepit city council[/bold] for help in assisting the problems and challenges faced by the market's traders.
Unfortunately not only have the council (and the police) not offered any help to traders, they have effectively conspired to ensure that conditions deteriorated to what you now witness today.
New Labour politicians may be thick, greedy and irresponsible, but unfortunately they also have huge amounts of time on their hands in which to think (while scoffing copious amounts of free cream cakes) about how they can long-term undermine the best interests of the people they are supposed to help.

As of Monday there was no permission granted for such a build. An application was made in 2003 but that has since expired. basically the owners of the land NV properties tried to get permission to build a multi-storey complex on it in late 2006 but it is not yet approved. So they have erected the present sign on it with the purpose, I can only assume, to attract another party which will take it off their hands. PS The correct name for the ground which is now a carpark is Jocelyn Square.

[italic]Some background[/italic]:
Here's what spokesperson for Paddy's Market traders and tenants, Brian Daly said about the conduct of the council:
[quote]"There has been a sustained approach by some Labour councillors and council officials to make unsupported claims both in council and through the media locally in an attempt to gain public and council support for their project.
"The whole affair has been one of misrepresentation of the facts to the public, the media and to the council itself. We live in a democratic society yet, some of those who we trust to carry out duties on our behalf have chosen to make decisions and disregard the wishes of the electorate.
"Labour councillors refused to share vital information with other elected members from other political parties who also represent this area or include them in the vital stages of the decision making process.
"Elected members who behave in such a way should and must be held fully accountable for their actions, and whilst it would be inappropriate for me to pre-empt the findings of the Standard Commission investigation, I believe the evidence against those Councillors involved is pretty damning. We won't put up with the bully boy tactics of the council any longer."[/quote]
And let's not forget that - according to a press release on allmediascotland:
[quote]Eleven Labour Glasgow City Councillors, including Councillor George Ryan, who last night suddenly pulled out of the contest to represent Labour in the crucial Glasgow East by-election, were reported to the Standards on 18 June 2008 in connection with a controversial land deal in the city centre.
The complaint surrounded their conduct in relation to the controversial attempt to close down the 150 year old Paddy’s Market in the city and obtain land on which the market is currently located.
The complaint which was submitted to the Standards Commission of Scotland by a representative of Paddy’s Market traders claimed that Councillor Ryan misled the council in a report he presented to the council’s Executive Committee which recommended the council purchase the head lease of the land where the market is situated and for the historic Paddy’s Market to be closed down.[/quote]

"Innocent, decent traders", "Cultural heritage"? Come on! The reality is Paddy's is a cesspit of pirate DVD and junk sellers! There's no place in the 21st century for this Steptoe-esque eyesore!
Congratulations to the council for acting to close this place down for the benefit of all the city's residents!

I have to walk by it every day and it's a sad shadow of what it used to be. Every night at 12:30 a vulture comes by with the sole purpose of emptying the 3 huge containers which lie at the mouth of the market (this was not always the case). Why don't the traders get together and produce their own action plan. Or maybe that's already be done and rejected?

We live in a democratic society yet, some of those who we trust to carry out duties on our behalf have chosen to make decisions and disregard the wishes of the electorate. "Labour councillors refused to share vital information with other elected members from other political parties who also represent this area or include them in the vital stages of the decision making process. "Elected members who behave in such a way should and must be held fully accountable for their actions, and whilst it would be inappropriate for me to pre-empt the findings of the Standard Commission investigation, I believe the evidence against those Councillors involved is pretty damning. We won't put up with the bully boy tactics of the council any longer."
And let's not forget that - according to a press release on allmediascotland: Eleven Labour Glasgow City Councillors, including Councillor George Ryan, who last night suddenly pulled out of the contest to represent Labour in the crucial Glasgow East by-election, were reported to the Standards on 18 June 2008 in connection with a controversial land deal in the city centre. The complaint surrounded their conduct in relation to the controversial attempt to close down the 150 year old Paddy’s Market in the city and obtain land on which the market is currently located. The complaint which was submitted to the Standards Commission of Scotland by a representative of Paddy’s Market traders claimed that Councillor Ryan misled the council in a report he presented to the council’s Executive Committee which recommended the council purchase the head lease of the land where the market is situated and for the historic Paddy’s Market to be closed down.
-- Sydney Meriwether "One of Glasgow's more intelligent residents."
Sydney, thanks for the background, but it does not detract from the fact that the market is now a mess.

Well they are roofing over the Buchanan Bus Station to give us an even bigger Buchanan Galleries....
They do give us that horrible German market at Christmas time selling vile food and dodgy goods and it takes up the most of the pedestrian part of Argyle Street.

First of all, I make my money from buying and selling 2nd hand goods of all descriptions, so I know A LITTLE of what goes on.
Electrical items sold there VERY rarely work and are sold illegally since they have no electrical safety stamp.
Most of the clothes come from collections made by VERY dodgy "charities". We`ve all had black bin bags with badly printed labels on them pushed through our doors.
The drugs SHOULD have been nipped in the bud, but no matter who is to blame, it wasn`t.
The pirate DVDs would not exist if the public were not being ripped off by the "legitimate" DVD manufacturers. Lets not forget, MOST DVDs were in the cinemas, and older ones were originally available on video too. So I have no sympathy for the DVD industry AT ALL.
Cap all DVDs at £5 ........ problem vanishes if it is coupled with HEAVY sentences for manufacturing of any DVDs of films currently in the cinemas.
They can`t move to the Barras or Blochairn since they are not open every day.
Besides, Blochairn on a Sunday is now rife with fake DVDs, stolen goods, copied games, bootleg fags, programmed cable NTL/Virgin boxes ..... the list is endless.
The BIGGEST and most ironic thing about all of this?????? Blochairn in one day is worse than Paddys six days, AND BLOCHAIRN IS COUNCIL OWNED AND RUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

However Stewie, who's to say Glasgow wouldn't have received so much destruction, the aftermath of which that we see today (Westminster) if Hitler had won the battle of the fascists? For which the war in Europe was.
My grandfather was a POW in Burma, does that mean I'm supposed to hate Japanese people?
Sorry, I would actually love to go to Japan, one of the leading countires in the world, for which Scotland was far ahead of them not too long ago, as a result of crippling British policy stewie, we are now a joke.
Please stop being so insular, rather a cheap (Alf Garnett) comment from you, surprised more than anything else.

In fact Stewie, my mate is moving to Southampton, he's actually glad, because this place was depressing him, now he's giving it "Ah hear ma train a comin"
Who can blame him? He is being offered the job of his life that he wouldn't have got in Glasgow, so why stay here to be a Jobbyseeker, graduating to Incapacity, when clearly, there is opportunity elsewhere as a result of unionist neglect upon Scotland?
If I could get a chance, I would do that too.
That's another native moved Mr Purcell, many more will follow suit.
Pathetic

I know someone who has been filing in various jobs for the past ten years.
This person came up to me the other day and said... "When are you qualified as a filer, how many years do you have to prove that you can file **** in alphabetical order before someone decides that you are experienced, and you can go on to something further?"
My reply was that half of Glasgow is sitting in officves filing, if its not filing its taking phone calls or sorting out the social problems of the "other half of this crazy city, which the ET and GCC seem to ignore.
Enuff said, any more of this and I might have to put a claim in for incapacity, and milk it like everybody else.

It is GLASGOW [bold]CITY[/bold] COUNCIL.
Good riddance Paddy's Market, the market for trash (no doubt frequented by many Coatbridgeites).
