CRIMINALS' cash is to be used to boost women's football in Scotland.

Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill announced today that the government was giving the SFA almost £300,000 to encourage more girls to play and coach the sport.

The money comes from the CashBack for Communities scheme.

It will be used to link schools to the 12 Scottish Women's Premier League clubs, to help fund roadshows in areas not covered by these clubs - and to develop a national programme.

Around 27,000 females in Scotland play the sport.

Mr MacAskill said: "Football can play a big part in diverting young people from getting involved in crime and anti-social behaviour."

The cash was welcomed by SFA chief executive Gordon Smith and Scotland international Shelley Kerr.

Mr Smith said: "We're committed to creating and maintaining structures that will allow as many girls to play organised football as possible."

Ms Kerr added: "I think it's crucial that girls are given as many opportunities as possible to play football, to develop their talent, to learn about teamwork and to learn good habits for life."
