THE widows of two tugboat crewmen today called for a full public inquiry into the Flying Phantom tragedy.

Speaking after a damning report slammed fatal safety flaws, Helen Humphreys and Linda Cameron said no other families should have to suffer the same anguish.

Stephen Humphreys, Robert Cameron and Eric Blackley all died when the tug capsized in freezing fog.A report released yesterday by the Marine Accident Investigation Branch found a series of errors.

At a press conference today, Mrs Humphreys and Mrs Cameron said the findings left them "shocked and dismayed".

As well as pushing for a public inquiry, they are also considering legal action against Clydeport Ltd.

This could include a civil claim - and they may also urge the Crown Office to consider corporate manslaughter charges.

Mrs Humphreys, who was at today's press conference in Glasgow with her 18-month-old daughter Nina, said: "We don't want other families to go through the devastation we have suffered."

Mrs Cameron said: Not enough action has been taken to ensure that similar accidents don't happen again."

The Scottish Secretary of the trade union Unite, John Quigley, also called for immediate action following the release of the MAIB report.

Mr Quigley said, "As a result of this damning report Unite are calling for a Public Inquiry into this tragedy and for the Lord Advocate to bring charges of Culpable Homicide against Clydeport.

"Our members go to work to provide for themselves and their families - not to suffer injury or death.

"Unite will not let this issue slip and we shall be urging action on this report from Ministers at the Scottish and UK Parliaments.

"This case has ramifications for our members at all ports throughout the UK."

Unite has also reiterated calls for corporate killing legislation to be placed back at the top of the justice agenda following the release of the report.
