‘Get tough’ on booze sales to kids

by Brian Currie

SHOP owners or licensees who sell alcohol to under-18s should be named and shamed, a Glasgow MSP said today.

Paul Martin wants details of rogue traders put on the internet.

Urging a government crackdown, the Spring-burn Labour MSP said it was time to get tough.

He added: "I am appalled that in the past four years only three rogue retailers have been prosecuted in Glasgow for selling alcohol to children.

"The reality of street life in Glasgow is that many more premises are repeatedly breaking the law by selling alcohol to under-18s.

"Shops and supermarkets which sell alcohol to children should know they will automatically lose their licence and be named and shamed.

"Taking action against the harm that alcohol causes should be a priority and this is a practical measure that will show that selling to children will not be tolerated in Scotland."

Mr Martin's call comes as MSPs debate a Tory motion criticising the government's plans to raise the age for buying alcohol in off-sales from 18 to 21.

Tory deputy leader Murdo Fraser said the government's plans were "ludicrous".

Mr Fraser said: "What a pity that this proposal has stolen the headlines and dominated the debate when we should be addressing issues around which we are likely to achieve some degree of consensus.

"It's wrong in principle to raise the age which alcohol can be bought from 18 to 21. We have problem drinkers at every age in society.

"To target 18 to 21-year-olds suggests that group alone has a problem which does not apply to other sectors of society.

"This proposal is discriminatory and there's simply no evidence to back it up."

Simple ...... catch the once take away the SHOPS licence, that way it won`t simply be transferred to the wife/uncle/brother etc.
A thing that has ALWAYS puzzled me though.
Most of the off licences are owned by those of the Moslem faith ...... fags, booze and any pork product is STRICTLY forbidden, yet in most you can buy your booze and fags plus a packet of bacon for the next mornings breakfast.
Anyway, as I say, no matter WHO owns the shop, no excuses, licence removed FOR THE SHOP, AND NOT RE-ISSUED. Also, the named licence holder should be banned for 5 years from re-applying AUTOMATICALLY!!!!!!!

Simple solution - catch them once & they lose their licence & confiscate their stock with no right of appeal...and no future owner of the shop should be allowed to sell alcohol.

If Paul Martin is going to send out press releases to the Evening Times he might at least buy a copy once and a while. Then he would see that the ET has 'named and shamed'.

Fine for shop man who sold 'spy kid' drink

The offending shops must be closed down, as mentioned by others, with NO OPTION to change ownership etc. Shops selling alcohol would also have an easier time if ID CARDS were held by everyone. No ID to prove your age - no alcohol sold. It is quite simple. Would also help publicans, club owners etc etc, but no doubt there will be the usual furore from the civil liberties mob who always ignore the obvious benefits of a card and will also condemn problem situations which arise because we don't have cards!

There already is Scot Card.
A photo ID card for young people.
My daughter has one and I think she shows she`s responsible just by having one.
Mind you she probably got it for the discounts it offers in some places!!!!!
Now she also has her Student ID. Next it`ll be her driving licence ......... now eplain to me again the furore over national id cards...............

Interesting that every poster sees the same straightforward solution. This makes me think there is some law or other to prevent it happening. Politicians rarely miss an easy bandwagon to jump on.

The authorities should also be targeting the low life " adults " who frequently purchase alcohol for underage kids. I recently informed a shopkeeper about one of his regular drunken customers who frequently and openly charges kids for his services, the going rate he charges the kids is £3, for that, he will go into the shop and purchase alcohol/cigarettes for them. The shop keeper seemed not to care a jot, I also informed the community police and they asked ME to keep a note of the days/times this low life was carrying out the offences. Politicians in general are prominent in situations like this when there is a photo opportunity. Time to get tough on the licence holders and revoke their right to sell alcohol, maybe a three strikes and your out system would work.
