Hopw the feck does it cost almost £3 to pick up a tyre?????????
Where in hells name do councils get their figures and more importantly, their quotes from????
Whilst we all agree that fly tippers should be hammered, it has to be noted that legislation, mainly from Brussels, has led to a massive increase in dumpping.
The EU and the UK government were warned at the time that this would happen all over Europe, but no one listened.
Tyre "removal specialists" are billing councils all over Scotland for picking up tyres from council skip sites ......... WHY??
They are already getting the "materials" for their lucrative businesses for free.
Just on the subject of "recycling"..... if I can get £6 for a non working telly, and £3 for a dvd player, and £7 -£10 for an old bike ..... why can`t the councils ?????
May this incompetence from councils continue ... I`m doing not bad through their ineptitude!!!

When will will pubs have to start clearing up the mess of cigarette butts on the pavements. here are 2 pubs in my street and I have observed staff from both establishemnts coming out with a brush and sweeping the butts in to the gutter. Would it [bold]really[/bold] by that much more effort to sweep them on to a shovel and put them in a bin???

[quote]Mr Booth said: "Given the high instance of cockroach infestation in Govanhill, a limited free treatment service is appropriate."[/quote]
It is not only Govanhell, but also Pollokshields which is heavily infested ny cockroaches.
I for one would not consider eating in any establishments within these areas. Makes you wonder what those 'crunchy' bits are in your dinner. Take-away anyone?
Furthermore, if the infestation problem is not tackled quickly and effectively, the whole city could be affected.

For goodness sake! The top paper in Scotland and you have rubbish on your front page instead of the world crisis which will savage employment in Glasgow within a few months. Yes indeed - the whole city and the whole of Scotland will suffer. The Israelis will hide behind the turmail to launch a strike on Iran.

To make folk laugh even more - The Clean Glasgow Inititiative held a launch of their "Neighbourhood Inmorovement Volunteer" Programme.....last week, at the Lighthouse, in Mitchell Lane.
What a joke, there was more merchandise to sell the farce that "Clean Glasgow" is, and asking people to sign up was effectively asking them to become glorified, voluntary cleaners - with no rewards, or incentives,
apart from the bird boxes, seedlings, and points that can be traded in for more bird boxes. Who in their right mind would sign up to something as shallow, glorified, and pointless ?
For all the gimmicks, and freebies they didn't give away even one set of litter pickers, or pair of industrial gloves. The very things they should of been giving away were brushed to one side ( pardon the pun) in favour of their stupid merchandise.
I mean a bar of soap with "Clean Glasgow" and the 0800 phone number is far better - NOT!
As for Ruth Simpsons speech / rant, she was like a broken down record player, with no passion, real sound of honesty or truth in her voice. Frankly, she was embarrassing to watch.

It seems to be that the council focus on the west end and city centre with this campaign, then occasionally shove a east end location in to try and balance the books. I hope they will be as zealous getting the political parties when the pollute lamp posts with posters and leave them long after the campaign. I also notice their enforcement officers must be scared to go into the southside, I recently had to drive through govanhill, it is a disgrace, they have piles of rubbish the length of Alison street and adjoining streets.

Correct me please if I am wrong but the modern football pitches that young kids play on I think that they are called "3G" all the black stuff that they are lined with is all cut up old car tyres. I am sure that the company's that cut these tyres up would have gladly come along and uplifted these tyres thus saving the relevant authorities a small fortune, or is that too simple an idea.

Yeah, Mr. Statistics.....care to prove your sweeping generalisation? Considering the number of businesses apparently involved, I would question the relevance of council tax collection rates anyway.
Those who are not responsible for the problem have nothing to fear from the guilty being "named and shamed" - or do you object because it deflects the blame for the problem from your beloved target, the Council?

[italic]The voice of Glasgow's silenced majority.[/italic] [/quote] What do you propose then? A softly softly approach? Should people that drop litter or fly tip be allowed to do so as they please with absolutely no responsibility, consequences or action? Should we all just accept it, and then blame the Council, as its their fault that people drop litter?
Also, I don't think that Clean Glasgow has a policy of alienating and antagonising the (the) vast majority of decent Glaswegians... even if you take the amount of people that have been fined or named and shamed (then subtract the ones that are not decent Glaswegians), I think you will come far short of majority of Glasgow's population.
Also remember, the vast majority of Glaswegians are in support of its name and shame policy (If I were to use your sweeping correlation from ET polls to representative of the vast majority of Glasgow from the other day.)
Reader Poll 12/12/07
Should litter louts be named and shamed?
Yes 74.0%
No 24.5%
Don't know 1.5%

Yet more evidence of the complete failure and monumental waste of money that the tacky Clean Glasgow campaign has been: £5+ MILLION pound down the drain... and now the decrepit city council is asking for yet more taxpayers' money to fund this failing vanity initiative when it's imposing £150 million cuts to services for vulnerable people over four years! -- Sydney Meriwether The voice of Glasgow's silenced majority.
If some of the taxpayers didn't dump so much rubbish in an irresponsible fashion, the council wouldn't have to ask for more money. Presumably these irresponsible people are not part if the "silenced majority" you claim to represent.
Would you rather they continued to let the problem escalate, then you could moan about them doing nothing, instead of moaning about them doing something, or would you just moan about them anyway in your usual moaning-faced fashion.....?
I think you'll find that among these individuals there is a strong negative correlation between the amount illegally dumped and the amount of council tax paid... and don't forget that Glasgow has the worst council tax collection rate in the whole country!
'Clean' Glasgow's policy of alienating and antagonising the the vast majority of decent Glaswegians via its heavy-handed 'name-and-shame' stunt means that it will NEVER be successful.

The voice of Glasgow's silenced majority.
What do you propose then?
Yes 74.0%
No 24.5%

I can, however, be found at Blochairn most Sundays with one of the biggest pitches there.
My collection of mainly recycled electricals, electronics (including PCs) and other household and leisure items (or as the missus calls it "junk") is a joy to behold.
Actually the biggest amazement is that it all fits in my van!!!!
Plus .... strangely all my stuff works!!!!!
Anyway, enough of the self advertising.
I can recycle more things in a week than most of the "hardened recyclers" recycle in a year!!!

Dear sir,
There has been swift action about the rubbish in the west end. However nothing has happened over the amount of rubbish, dog fouling and general filth in Govanhill. Alison St is the dirtiest street in Scotland and no action is taken. Is it because Alison St is in a poorer area that the West?

It's a bit ridiculous the fly tipping of tyres wasn't dealt with after the first dozen or two. It must have taken hundreds of van or lorry journeys to dump them.
Having said that, some idiot once actually dumped tyres on a train track down south. The conductor couldn't hide his fury at the idiocy of it - the train was held up while the tyres were removed - someone had dumped them off a railway bridge...

The residents of Maryhill are having difficulties having their household refuse collected, never mind bulk collections or fly tipping. We've not had any collections for 2 weeks, fingers crossed for this week.

We contacted Clean Glasgow after a rouge landord got a group of Slovakian kids to gut his top floor flat in Govanhill by them chucking bags of rubble, skirting boards, electric fans, large tubs of paint etc out of a top floor window. This started on a Sat night after 10pm and continued intermittently over the next few days. Even though we caught some of this on video, Clean Glasgow came back to tell us there was nothing they could do. This fly tipping was dumped on an area of waste ground and some had fallen into our back court bin area. They can serve notices on us (the general law-abiding public), but couldn't get a team out to catch the culprits at it, even though we had called them when the culprits could have been caught and fined on the spot. Says it all to us - Clean Glasgow are absolutely not bothered about fining these selfish parasites to society.
