The new Skyhub is set to open on Tuesday

AIRPORT bosses in Glasgow are getting ready for the launch of their new £31million terminal building.

Passengers will start using the ground floor of the Skyhub from Tuesday.

One of the attractions will be a new bar, which has set back one of Britain's favourite publicans a cool £900,000 and will create 50 jobs.

A week later, on Tuesday, October 28, the terminal building will become fully operational and will include a new £12million security search area on the first floor, which will also have duty-free shopping and extra seats.

The extra terminal will offer holidaymakers and business passengers a selection of shops, bars and restaurants over two floors.

High Street pub chain JD Wetherspoon will open The Sandpiper on Tuesday while keeping open an existing pub at the airport where up to 40 staff are employed.

The new pub takes its name from a species of bird being protected at a wildlife sanctuary not far from the airport. The new Wetherspoon's will serve customers alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks as well as coffee and tea and a range of snacks.

Landlady Joanne Small said: "I am looking forward to welcoming customers into The Sandpiper and believe the pub will be a good addition to Glasgow Airport."

An airport spokesman said: "Over the past year, we have invested £31m transforming the airport, and we think passengers will enjoy the new-look Glasgow Airport.

"With state-of-the-art security and a great choice of shops, bars and restaurants all under one roof we've made it easier than ever to fly.

"This is the biggest investment we have made since the 1990s and signals our commitment to invest in security and customer service at Glasgow Airport.

"As well as providing state-of-the-art security, the new terminal extension also offers more space for passengers to relax before their flight, with a new UK arrivals hall, more seating, new shops, bars and restaurants, including the new ground floor JD Wetherspoon.

"Our investment is providing additional employment for local people and transforming the experience for passengers using Glasgow Airport.

"Passengers can expect more improvements in the weeks ahead as we begin upgrading the existing terminal building as part of the ongoing transformation of the airport."

He added: "This investment is great news for Glasgow's economy and will further boost its reputation as a world-class destination."

For God's sake, - this piece doesn't even pretend to be a news story, - it's just a cliche ridden P.R. puff.- Who really wants to know the pub's called 'the sandpiper' or the derivation of the bloody name?

I think you're both being harsh.

I think that calling the pub 'The Sandpiper' fulfils an educational role and will be a key talking point for those drinking in the pub.

Because of this very story I've already learned something about sandpipers today. I'll take that glistening nugget of knowledge to the grave.

Well done I say!

In any event, this isn't a "new terminal". It's an extension to the existing one.

As for BAA, the fact that they say "this is the biggest investment we have made since the 1990s" is actually a damning indictment on their recent ownership of the airport.

Sorry. I

f you're really standing in for Sydney, you'll need to drop in some incontinent and incoherent rant about the Cooncil, and why this is all their fault. Even though no-one actually is at fault in this instance.

All very jolly. A pint of Guinness at Heathrow's new Terminal 5 Wetherspoon's was £2.55 and £3.10 at the Glasgow airport branch. I always knew that the prices at Glasgow airport bore no relation to reality. Guess they'll recoup the 900K investment sharpish.

You obviously don't understand a journalist's lifestyle. Get legless in a pub (while being paid by the newspaper) then write a gushing and uncritical report singing its praises in gratitude for the free drink. It's how journalists always have lived and always will.

The best thing to happen to Glasgow Airport in recent years has been Greggs opening! Where else can you get a steak bake and a fudge doughnut at 8pm on a Sunday?? Magic!
