A GANG of pensioners robbed a newsagent of almost £8000 in a lunchtime raid.

The robbery happened in Glasgow's West End as a female shop assistant fetched a light bulb for a customer from the back shop of News and Views post office and newsagent in Byres Road.

She returned to the front counter to find a bag containing two days worth of takings which, were due to be banked, had gone from under the counter.

The culprits were captured on CCTV during the raid which happened just before 1pm last Thursday and all look to be aged over 60.

The gang, one of whom wore a suit and tie, also helped themselves to almost £450 worth of stamps and pinched 100 £5 powercards.

Shop assistant Agnes Blaine, 57, of Govan was terrified by her ordeal.

She said: "There were five of them, one of them came into the shop asking for a light bulb which I went to get from the back of the shop.

"When I came back two others blocked my way.

"I couldn't clearly see them, because one of them had a cap, but I think they must have been aged 60 years or more."

The shop is owned by Mamun Rashid, 38, whose family has owned the post office for 16 years.

Mr Rashid, of Jordanhill, said: "I wasn't there at the time because I take my day off on Thursday.

"I came back and Agnes was shaking and crying."

Police are examining CCTV footage from the shop which captures the shocking events unfolding.

A grey-haired man wearing a cream jacket and glasses is seen entering the shop and chatting to Agnes.

He takes her to the back of the shop.

However, while Agnes is away from the counter two men - one in a suit and the other with grey hair and wearing what appears to be a leather jacket - enter the shop and head for the cash.

Another man wearing a baseball cap is in the shop at the time and staff believe he was involved.

The first man later pays for his lightbulb and according to Agnes told her to put the change in the charity box.

A police spokeswoman said they were investigating the raid.

What one's Sydney?

Now you mention it, he's not been on this site for a few days. He must be lying low somewhere.

At least we know where to get cheap powercards now.

He's probably looking for the dosh to try out one of these new hotels - if not, it could be some social outcast pensioners looking for the money for some booze and heating systems seein as Brown only had the cash to plough into banks - oddly enough.

According to reports from a Mr S Meriwether, they are part of an elite squad of robbers, The Aged-team, brought out of retirement by Stephen Purcell.

The "blue rinse bandits" were assembled to pull off heists to cover the shortfall caused by the council tax freeze.

It's believed, Hollywood are interested in buying the rights to the story in order to turn it into a film called Oceans 65 starring Ken Barlow, Peter Stringfellow and Bruce Forsyth.

The gang use an ingenious escape method, avoiding capture by using their "penny ticket" to flee the scene on public transport.

re the takings of 2 days under the counter,? does the insurance company pay out for this theft? ...i do not think so, and if it had not been made public where the bags of money were lifted from there may have been a chance of repayment,(doesent the wee shop sell padlocks for instance? then the padlock would have been harder to break open from the drawer or safe where it was secured.

Now every potenial thief in the city is aware how much money that shop banks. Mind you, ET have helped us all, any-one care to work out their VAT & tax return ;) Not that I would ever suggest that a small asian shop keeper handling cash daily, could ever fiddle the books. They just do not do that sort of thing. Sending money home for family with-out declaring, never does such happen.
