The memorials which the lady is sitting by do not look in any way out of the ordinary or unacceptable. This is a petty minded gesture by this company. The items do not look large or unsafe and did the company let the site get into such a state that it prompted complaints?

I have marked the poll that there should be restrictions as to what is left by a grave as some memorials do go OTT.

I know it sounds crazy, but under Health and Safety regulations, headstones, etc placed at a graveside must be secure and not in any way a public safety risk, particularly to children who may play in the cemetery.
In fact, not that long ago one council made safe, headstones which they deemed unsafe, and sent relatives the bill to cover costs.
Crazier still, they employ a person to check the safety of headstones. Job creation in other words.

How did they find out the address of the relatives. Also relatives are not responsable for upkeep of cemetary. The Bill is only valid if a relative authorised the work to be carried out

I take it they didn't ask before going ahead and putting these memorials in place. Sometimes a quiet word is all that is needed and could have spared all the grief.

Many memorial stones, when deemed unsafe, are actually laid flat, and relatives think it was vandalism until they are notified otherwise.
The memorials are not the property of the council; they are the property of the executors of the deceased person but the council(or firm) are responsible for the graveyard and have a duty of care to the public.

WHAT AN ABSOLUTE DISCRACE!!!!! The plot in which my Cousin and Gran have are kept tidy and safe at all times. The Co-op have NO right to do what they have done. I feel terrible for not just my family but the other families that have had to go through this horrible time. Is it not enough that we have lost our loved ones?

I may be missing a point somewhere, if so I apologise. I am sorry for this lady's losses but this a cremetorium garden of remembrance, not a cemetery plot. Unfortunately plots and permanent memorial stones are all part of the choice between burial and cremation. I also have close family whose ashes were scattered in this garden and organised a small rose bush and plaque at the site. It has been trod on and moved numerous times, not by the council and not by the co-op, but by other families of no more or no less grieving relatives, to make space for their memorials.
Those responsible for maintaining the site have to set some kind of limit on the size and types of memorials there, since there's no way this site can accommodate permanent marker stones.

the co-operative funeralcare have stated that they have informed relatives by letter but that is not true,my dad's plot is only one of several family plots we have at craigton and not one of us have received any writen notice.
All our plots are kept clean and tidy and do not have anything on them that could be a hazard to any member of the public the only notices are the ones that are pinned to some trees in the crematorium and if people are not there every week then they have no way of knowing.

Re the sad story in the Evening Times 22/10/08 My-self and family can sympathise with Catherines story my family only found out by chance when my sister went to visit our mum's plot to find notices pinned all over the Crematorium telling people to remove personal belonging as they would be removed or put in a skip we did not receive any letter informing us this was going to happen we removed all our tributes to our late mum including a heart shaped stone specially made from Spanish granite which now resides at our family home it's disgusting and very upsetting to be treated in this way as we a family of eight who tended regularly to tend to our mum's plot with loving care like Catherine we did not receive any notification but found out totally by chance we and every body who has a lost love one paid not only good money for a place to grieve and remember for these people to destroy this in a very cruel and calous way with no hint of compassion once again no letter was ever sent or even intended some-one should be made accountable for this heartbreak to many families and I would challenge any-one at Co-operative Funeral Care to produce the letter which was suppost to be sent we as a family decided we would take our mum home so she could finally rest in peace at our family home in Mosspark. why dont crematoriums have a wall like at ibrox or celtic park where you can put a brick up as a permanent memorial to a loved one this would take up far less room than is currently taken up by other items and would be easier to maintain

You can buy a small and shallow plot for the interment of ashes. This allows you to bury the ashes and also erect a monument on that site. That would resolve the distressing stories mentioned in above comments.

Id like to say that I am one of the people who complained bitterly about the state of the Garden of Remembrance at Craigton due to the amount of tac and unauthorised plaques that has been left there. I have a rose tree in rememberance of my Father and Grandmother and last year I had to have their plaques removed to a new plot due to the tac surrounding the original killing the tree(which has been ours for 20years). Surely if you want to have a headstone/large plaques etc in rememberance of your loved ones your choice should be a burial? I actually went to Craigton at the end of September to remove my Plaques as the new plot had also started to gather tac and extras too which I was really sickened about, but to my surprise there was notices up advising that all unauthorised goods were to be removed, so I left them. If the tac stays then im afraid I will not hesitate in cancelling future rental of my tree and uplifting my Authorised Plaques.

The Co-op is by the people for the people and would never do anything as crass as removing small items of a memorial connnection particularly as they had been there for 18 years.
No wwhoever ordered the removal would have to be a small petty minded evil son of a *itch who worked Someone knows the truth .
Come on you Co-op managers and workers just what the *ell have you been doing?

My sister and I go every week to my mums garden at craigton, and we were discusted that we had to remove all the personal items. We had a small headstone which we asked permission for 4 years ago and was told it would be ok to have it.We are the first to admit we had a large area with personal items, but would have made it smaller if we were asked to do so, We removed everything BUT left the headstone against the rose tree. A week later I went back and the headstone had been removed along with the artificial flowers. We were so upset,What harm is small headstones doing. I don't know why they are saying letters got sent out as that is just rubbish, we certainly never got one and it seems neither did anyone else. Yes there were notices up. most people kept the place nice and I feel very angry that we can't have anything personal in Mum's garden (thats what we called it) and felt mum was close to us when we went to craigton, NOW I DONT FEEL ANYTHING WHEN I GO. WHOEVER SAID NOTHING PERSONAL WAS TO BE PLACED IN THESE GARDENS MUST HAVE NO FEELINGS.We are very very angry with this decision. Yvonne & Jacquie (barrhead)
quote
