Wouldnt it be a b*tch if Go Ape! went under due to the developing recession?! Me thinks Go Ape staff have engineered this, to get out of any constuctive meetings with the council or protestors. who knows maybe in 6 months Go ape will be in receivership and glasgow Council will be purged of its crooked and devious councillors who have put their own interests ahead of the people and the city. This article is inaccurate on at least two points - 'Save Pollok Park' has not been sent this letter, so rather than it being 'passed on to' the Evening Times it must have been sent directly to them; and SPP has not been, and was not intended to be, a 'negotiating partner'.
The letter is full of smears, trying to suggest that the 'leadership' of SPP is responsible for the vandalism - which they have condemned - & 'threatening letters'. It could be argued that Glasgow City Council is responsible, by pushing on with the proposal in the face of extensive public opposition.
It's no coincidence that this letter has been released just before a SPP public meeting. It's simply an attempt to discredit an organisation that's standing up to bully-boy big busines & Council tactics, and shows the desperate tactics they will sink to.

Why is it that folk are always banging on about the lack of amenities in their area they can enjoy with their families, yet as soon as someone is prepared to invest, they want it stopped ??
Do these NIMBY's just want it in somebody else's back yard ?
Surely they would welcome the investment and cash it will bring into the area.
If it's that mad a scheme it follows it won't last long anyway.
This sort of development should be applauded.

The Scottish Governmet did not approve go ape they just sent it back top Glasgow. This is not democracy. The Glasgow council have been shambolic in this whole affair and I hope the voters pay attention.

Perhaps these folk are thinking of amenities which are within the budget of ordinary families?? Many of those who are "banging on" actually consider Pollok Park to be an excellent amenity and one which they enjoy regularly with their familes completely free of charge.
I wonder if Go Ape has contacted the police over these "threatening letters". After all, that is a criminal offence - or are they maybe frightened where a polic investigation in to their claims might lead???

From the letter
Since then threatening letters have been sent to the home addresses of Go Ape! staff and serious criminal damaged has been caused to our course at Aberfoyle on two occasions, with zip wires being cut down and even being partially sawn through, making a potentially lethal trap for our customers and staff.
Those responsible for this criminal damage may or may not have been directly linked to Save Pollok Park
They make an accusation and then put a statement of doubt after it...typical tabloid-like smearing...

So [bold]why[/bold] have the contents not been disclosed and why no police investigation??? Just the letter written by GoApe bosses passed over to a local newspaper.
"smear tactics"? "PR campaign to discredit objectors"? - surely not from SUCH a reputable company as Go Ape!!!!!!

Heidthebaw folk are not always banging on about lack of investment in amenities in Pollok Park. Pollok Park attracts over 2 million visitors a year. It was voted Britain's best park in 2007 and Europe's best park this year. The Go Ape proposal is not actually necessary therefore and has simply alienated many of the people who love the Park because it will destroy the peace and quiet of the natural woodland.
Seymour Hope you are quite right. The Scottish Government can only call in a planning application if it has national importance, as with the Donald Trump planning application. The fact that they did not call in the Go Ape application does not mean that they have 'approved' it. That is blatant spin and misrepresentation.

heidthebaw,
There is always two sides to every story -
And, yet again the E.T. is printing the propaganda, and spin of "Go Ape" in a hope to pacify the objectors into silence.
Well dream on Glasgow City Council & E.T.
And unfortunately, the E.T. in this occassion just chooses to side with the enemy, and G.C.C. and ignore those with genuine concerns, or objections.
Those who stand up against the Council - Go vernment and authorities for what they believe in, wherever, and whatever the issue are to be commended - not berated.
Others who simply moan and do nothing, or slate the opinion of those who are actually doing something need to think twice!
All of those following this story, with the spin from "Go Ape"s publicity companies thrown in know the facts.
The difference is the protesters, campaigners, and people standing up for their rights, what they believe in and raising the issues that are of so much importance have no major publicity companies to back them - just their own gritty determination.
To me that speaks far louder volumes than any Council, or public numpties who seriously believe that there is any comparison between Pollok Park & Aberfoyle.
The two places are miles apart in their differences - and an inner city location - out of convenience, and a severe lack of fore-thought from G.C.C. is a shameful indictment upon an un - representative Glasgow City Council.

Pity the critics on this comments page are not journalists with the E.T. or other papers.
Maybe then, the public would not be so quick to believe the crap they read.
Maybe then the public would stand up and be counted, instead ofbeing so passive, apathetic in their whinging towach other - instead of to the correct authorities.
A "Save Pollok Park" public meeting at Pollokshaws Burgh Hall is one thing.
But, clearly S.P.P. will need to up the ante, and have a mass rally and more attention to let G.C.C and "Go Ape" see whos boss.
The electorate don't vote in these loonies to be completely mis-represented. We vote them in to have our wishes taken on board, and our rights respected, not trampled on.
Greed, money and power cannot always win.
Fighting for our rights through the democratic proceedures we have in place, and people power will win the day.
People just need to sit up and play their part. Action speaks louder than words, abd those who complain verbally and get nowhere need to realise that.

I , my family, my friends and colleagues are all glasgwegian, living in different parts of the city, different political views, jobs ...and the only development anyone i know objects to is the Botanic garden nightclub plan.
This Go -ape - family orientated, promotes risk taking by kids, physcial fitness, outdoors ,easy access with a city base as opposed to hundreds of cars travelling to distant spots.....you lot of pseuodo glaswegians would be better moving east to Edinburgh, try morningside, you would fit in well. En route to the dreary city, try and take your head out of your sphincter. And let us the majority of us real Glaswegians enjoy the go-ape facility. Isnt there a nig road getting built in the east end that you might objexct to? M74 anyone? NO..its not near pollok so you dont give a sheet. NIMBYism at its worst masquerading as community spirit.

should also have added that I am Glasgow born and bred, and do not live in the immediate vicinity of Pollok. Amongst my large social circle (from various parts of the city) I do noit know one single single person who is in favour of Go Ape inPollok Park.
So, I would suggest that you are making a fair number of assumptions about the people who have raised objections.

The story does seem as if it is the result of "spin" by a private company employing there PR company. Answer me this how would anyone get the home addresses of Go Ape employees and why if they received threatening letters have they not immediately gone to the Police as clearly this sort of behaviour is totally unacceptable. Makes me wonder if it actually happened.

Clearly we are all entitled to our own opinions, but only up to a point.
I too am not within the immediate vicinity of Pollok, so please do not suggest that my objections are on the grounds of NIMBY'ism.
Like Mulross - I am of the belief that Pollok Park, with its trails, beautiful surroundings, Burrell Collection, Pollok House and the Highland Cattle within it are more than enough to entertain and satisfy the majority of those who keep going back.
The unfortunate situation with todays generations is that greed, entrepreneurism, and capitalism are turning our city into an elitist habitat, with over-priced indulgences, such as "Go Ape" desicrating our parks tranquility, and spoiling their natural habitats.
This is about the suitability of location, for this venture, and the cost to so many ordinary people who cannot justify paying such high prices.
The only place "Go Ape" belongs is Glasgows City Chambers, George Square, as the monkeying around of our Councillors payed to do their so called job is a joke, and we're paying their wages to make such idiotic decisions on our behalf.

Got all of that rant off your chest ?
Aye, Glasgow City Councillors - don't you just love them. They only work hard when their up for election, claim their exorbitant expenses payed for by our wages, make the policies, and rules to suit themselves,
have their fancy buffets at our expense,
and spin their parties line like parrots, as if their life depended on it.
And, as for the idea of councillors having independantly functioning brains separate from their parties - surely that is asking far too much ?

I think the problem with people like Bob McKay is that they have never actually been to Pollok Park and have no understanding of what the issue is about.
There is no doubt at all that the vast majority of those who are regular park users are opposed to Go Ape. (That is why the consultation ommited them). Not because they are opposed to the scheme in principle but because it is being located in the North Wood.
Does this make them (or should I say us?) NIMBYs? Yes in a sense it does because we are saying that we do not wish something to destroy the peace and tranquility of our back yard. However the phrase NIMBY is usually used to denote people who object to something which is socially, economically or environmentally necessary and which represents progressive for the community.
That is not the case here. Who will lose out if Go Ape is not located in Pollok Park? No-one apart from Go Ape frankly. The park already attracts 2 million visitors per year, has won a host of awards and is internationally recognised as being a superb city park. It does not need anything 'extra' to attract visitors. It is not a failing park, it is an outstandingly successful park. So the description of NIMBY is not really accurate in this case and those who use it perhaps need to think a bit harder about what it is they wish to say.

Go Ape is pure and simple commercialisation of our parks and recreational spaces by a cash strapped council who has no interest in what its voters want.
If democracy is anything worth speaking about then the will of the people accross this city should be speaking far louder than they ever have, as clearly up until now they have not been listened to.
Why do we vote these muppets in ? Certainly not to completely go against the will of the majority of people who are speaking out.
Why do these councillors continue to do theur utmost to please such commercial enterprises, and businessses - greed pure & simple!
Lets ditch this Labour Council - they do not listen to our views, and never will - FACT!
Go Ape is pure and simple commercialisation of our parks and recreational spaces by a cash strapped council who has no interest in what its voters want.

Alot of us living in the pollok Park area don't have an issue with Go Ape as company. We would have been happy if it had been built away from the north wood in the park - I am really angry that there had been offers to talk about alternative sites with SPP yet they seem to have refused point blank to take Go Ape/Council up on their offer....
Those of us who signed the petition and have supported SPP should have been given this information and given the chance to have a say.... who makes the decisons over this type of thing in SPP??

It doesn't take much insight to see the way SPP treat anyone who disagrees with them - they have no rrespect for anyone. Look at their forums above, on their site and the videos are a disgrace.
These people don't just misrepresent Pollok they dont represent any of the good people of Glasgow. Their tone to others is appalling and they have a political agenda. Primarily it is NIMBYism at its worst. They can meet all they want tonight - they have no mandate and do not represent anyone except themselves.
I hope the people behind SPP have a good long look at themselves.

As far as I am aware, SPP have offered to discuss more suitable venues with the company away from the Park. All these issues and others have been discussed at public meetings. The Council have never made any "offers" to discuss anything with the objectors.
There is another public meeting tonight where people can ask questions and have their say. In the meantime, I would advise against being so quick to believe what is obviously a piece of blatant propaganda and a pathetic attempt to discredit SPP that has been put out by the company's PR people.

You are just demonstrating your ignorance there Luggie. "Friends" groups are currently operating in a number of Glasgow parks and there is information and encouragement to form these groups on the Council's own website.
Or maybe you already know that and are deliberately trying to mislead ET readers? Giving Tristam a helping hand with his smear campaign?

Save Pollok Park is I believe a co-joining of community councils across the south side.
I find the idea that community councillors would be involved in sabotage a bit ludicrous. You could accuse these people of being worthy do-gooders perhaps, but not of being criminals.
It may be that there are other forces out there who are targeting Go Ape for other reasons and obviously no-one would support criminal acts. But it has nothing to do with the Save Pollok Park group, which includes people like Conservative MSP Jackson Carlaw and the SNP's Nicola Sturgeon.
Although it must be admitted that Chick Young is involved as well. He is a bit of a wild card I suppose!

The unfortunate sabotage of the Go Ape park in Aberfoyle is of course to be condemned by all those with any sense of proportion and decency.
The point being is that whoever carried out this act of stupidity, endangering the lives of others clearly needs to be punished.
That saying, all we know is that so far it has been utter speculation over who carried out this vandalism. Nobody know for sure if the person / persons was even affiliated with Save Pollok Park.
So, before we go mud slinging,or pointing the finger - lets just remember that this meeting tonight is tobe a fare and open representation of the co-joined Community Councillors, and interested parties, to reach tbe best possible outcome given the circumstances we are facing.
Lets not jeopordise this meeting, or opportunity to raise valid points of view.
Equally, lets ensure that we use what little democratic processes we have available to us and ensure we make our objections count.
Ultimately, what will be will be.
Lets just hope that the final outcome within Pollok Park is one which is amiable for all parties concerned.

Bit of a coy article, wonder in the land of the vandals do they expect to win? Following staff home, threating lives, all should be ashamed.
No doubt the anachists will write a book, probably even have a camera. These people need to be found...

now that the freedom of information act is in vogue, it would be an idea for the greedy ones to find out who donated the park to whom....hands off.there is too much of this bully boy tactics by politcians, there was even a takeover bid of a park which had been given to the citizens of glasgow, there was a meeting to settle this takeover, meanwhile there was a newspaper in england with an advert for new homes being built in glasgow,... 'near shops trains, buses and a new acadamy in the vicinity....before any one knew about the take over bid, or the new academy.... the word used in scotland is....'sleekit.'( its never going to stop, its been going on for years)

Interesting things that came out of the Public Meeting included the fact that any money generated from Go Ape must be put into the "Common Good" fund which can be accessed by a number of charitable groups for different reasons.
NOT placing the revenue generated from "Go Ape" into it's own LES budgets.
Another interesting fact that came out of the meeting was that at one stage back in 1958 the "Common Good " fund was worth a massive £200 million pounds. Now it is only worth a mere £10 million.
The fact that so much of this money has been eaten away literally - used to pay for G.C.c Buffets was pointed out - and is just one of the reasons our council cannot be trusted. . .
Either, when it says it doesnt have the money to upgrade areas of deprivation or poverty, or when it says it has carried out a consultation.
With there being no prior consultation with The National Trust for Scotland either, and the National Trust having a vested interest in the preservation of the Park there is still alot of ground to be uncovered in exactly who has rights over Pollok Park, and whther G.C.C. can even grant planning permission without the open, and public approval of the National Trust, which it still does not have.
Watch this space - there is far more to this story than meets the eye, and all those who attended the Public Meeting at Pollokshaws Burgh Hall tonight can at least feel proud that they united in solidarity to fight for what they believe belongs to the people of Glasgow.
People Power will win the day - the democratic process is there to be used, not abused - Councillors ought to remember that fact.

People Power - what a load of trash. Your name, just like the 'Save Pollok Park' label is an attempt to hijack what belongs to everyone in favour of your own Nimbyism - and you treat those who disagree with utter contempt.
Has it not struck you that the £200 million down to £10 is because its been spent on common good? To suggest that its merely gone to 'GCC buffets' is infantile. Also people can watch this space in whatecver manner they wish - you have no special insight as to what will happen.
Public consultation means consultation for all - including NTS - so they WERE consulted. But just like SPP ignored proper process.
What you blatantly fail to see is that people power WILL and HAVE won the day - it just isn't under any of your names.

A bit more info about the mysterious letter -
It was sent by Go Ape's PR company in Glasgow.
A copy was received by SPP after it was published.
It was embargoed by the PR company when it was sent - which means that the Times couldn't make its contents known to anyone else before publication, so they couldn't get a response from SPP before publication.
The letter is clearly defamatory (confirmed by legal advice).
Which all confirms that Go Ape are resorting to dirty tricks & mis-information - an indication that they realise they've lost the argument?

Not my words those of the Councillor speaking at the Public Meeting - so take up this suggestion with them please.
If I were you I'd check up the facts yourself if you don't believe me.
As for whether people have the right to express their opinions freely without your kind of slating - or others - we'll clearly you're not able to show any respect, so I won't waste any more time replying to you.

Could you provide us with some examples to back up that assertion please? The meeting was told last night by a councillor that £200,000 from Glasgow's common good fund per year is spent on "buffet lunches". what facts are you able to provide on what is spent what most people would consider to be "common good" i.e. benefits the people of Glasgow?

mulross,
You know as well as me that gettinghold of the real fact, which the public are not privy to is made far harder - due to the way G.C.C. in all it's wisdom wishes to hide it's less than above board actions, and behaviour.
The idea of G.C.C not being able to have their cake and eat it, or take full advantage of their positions, to the extent that they abuse their position of power, or the funds which are most certainly not to pay for their buffets may be just one example.
Whether the Common Good fund is as open to all - as the Council would like everyone to think is a matter of opinion.
Whether the Common Good fund has been used for the number of good causes and charities it should be is again debatable.
But - what is abundantly clear is that the people of Glasgow deserve to know exactly what our money is being spent on, and where every penny of it goes.
If it is into the stomachs of our overweight city councillors then this behaviour must be stopped - NOW!

Recently been made aware that the threating letters that Go Ape alluded to were in fact made in March, some 6 months before Go Ape made them public knowledge. One has to ask why the delay? Leaves me feeling that Go Ape or there PR were in fact acting in a devious manner. Also leaves me thinking have they been devious on other occasions.
