Glasgow Airport unveil new security search area

A new security search area at one of Scotland's busiest airports was unveiled today, marking the latest phase of a £31 million expansion.

From 4am, passengers at Glasgow Airport began passing through the terminal's new security zone which replaces three separate check areas.

International and domestic departures have been combined in an effort to increase capacity and reduce passengers' wait times.

New shops, bars and restaurants are planned for the former security areas, creating 250 jobs by June next year.

Glasgow Airport deals with about 9 million passengers a year and serves as the country's long-haul gateway to the US, Canada, Egypt and other far-flung destinations.

Operator BAA said the new arrangements had been going down well with travellers.

The airport's managing director Amanda McMillan said: "Security is our number one priority and we have invested heavily to build one of the largest security search areas in the UK, using the latest x-ray technology to speed passengers safely through the airport.

"Over the course of the next few months, we will begin upgrading the existing terminal building to provide additional seating areas, new shops and catering facilities.

"For passengers, it means a smoother journey through the airport, more space to relax and a wider choice of bars, shops and restaurants."

The £12 million football pitch-sized security area took about 18 months to build.

Seems all BAA airports are in decline. Indeed even the cash cow that used to be Edinburgh has seen its largest decline in over 10 years (3%) and worse is to follow, given the current economic problems in the UK

1. Let's see if I've got this straight: I'm travelling to a meeting in London, I arrive at the airport at 5.30am to find I'm in now the same queue for security as two 767s-worth of holidaymakers bound for Alicante and Palma, all with half-litre bottles of Factor 16 lotion to be checked and confiscated? Riiight, this is an improvement how?

2. Now that there is a common departure area where domestic and international passengers mix freely, will passengers now have to be photographed and barcoded, and in future fingerprinted, before travelling? No thanks. I'm not a criminal, so please don't treat me like one.

Two more reasons to take the train, then.

Ah well, it could be worse, try catching your London flight around lunchtime as a Boeing 777 load of Dubai bound passengers try to get through security...

Presumably we'll be advised to allow a four hour check in, after all there 's lot's of lovely shops ti rip us off now.

That's great having all these extra shops etc. But what's the point in having them selling anything liquid over 100mLs when the new security will only take it off you. They should have done all these things for after the security.
