VIDEO: Change has come to America

BARACK OBAMA wrote a new page in the history books today when he won a landslide vote to become the first ever black president of America.

He surged past the winning line after a string of results around 4am saw the Democrat capture the key states of Virginia, California and Washington.

The 47-year-old took to the stage in Chicago to thunderous applause from hundreds of thousands of supporters.

With wife Michelle and daughters Malia, 10, and Sasha, seven, at his side, the president-elect said America was a place where all things were possible and the "dream of our founders" is alive.

He added: "We are, and always will be, the United States of America.

"It's time to put hands on the arc of history and bend it once more to the hope of a better day.

"It's been a long time coming but tonight, because of what we did on this day, in this election, at this defining moment, change has come to America."

Barack Obama's victory speech in full

Mr Obama said he had received an "extraordinarily gracious" call from his Republican rival John McCain, who'd "fought long and hard" for this campaign and for his country. And he added: We are better off for the service rendered by this brave and selfless leader.

"I congratulate him. I congratulate governor Sarah Palin for all that they've achieved.

"And I look forward to working with them to renew this nation's promise in the month's ahead."

He paid tribute to his running mate Joe Biden. Mr Obama also thanked his campaign manager David Plouffe, whom he described as an "unsung hero" who "built the best political campaign, I think, in the history of America".

And after paying tribute to his wife and children, he said he knew his 86-year-old grandmother Madelyn Dunham, who helped raise him but died of cancer late on Sunday night, would be watching.

He added: "Above all, I will never forget who this victory truly belongs to; it belongs to you.

"I was never the likeliest candidate for this office. We didn't start with much money or many endorsements, and our campaign was not hatched in the halls of Washington."

He said that his campaign "began in the backyards of Des Moines" and was built by working men and women "who dug into what little savings they had" to give small donations to the campaign.

"It grew strength from the young people who rejected the myth of their generation's apathy, who left their homes and their families for jobs that offered little pay and less sleep.

"It grew strength from the not-so-young people who braved the bitter cold and scorching heat to knock on doors of perfect strangers, and from the millions of Americans who volunteered and organised and proved that more than two centuries later a government of the people, by the people and for the people has not perished from the earth.

"This is your victory."

Delivering his message, Mr Obama told those whose support he had not won: "I hear your voices, I need your help and I will be your president too." He told those watching outside the US that "our stories are singular but our destiny is shared.

"The new dawn of American leadership is at hand," he said.

"To those who would tear the world down, we will defeat you.

"To those who seek peace and security, we support you.

"And to all those who have wondered if American's beacon still burns as bright, tonight we've proved once more that the true strength of our nation comes not from the might of our arms or the scale of our wealth, but from the enduring power of our ideals, democracy, liberty, opportunity and unyielding hope. That's the true genius of America."

Mr Obama said the challenges to come were "the greatest of our lifetime" - two wars, a planet in peril and a financial crisis, adding: "The road ahead will be long, our climb will be steep. We may not get there in one year, or even in one term, but I promise you, we as a people will get there."

He said there would be "setbacks and false starts" and the government would not be able to solve every problem.

But he vowed: "I will listen to you, especially when we disagree.

"Above all, I will ask you to join in the work of remaking this nation the only way it's been done in America in 221 years, block by block, brick by brick, calloused hand by calloused hand.

"What began 21 months ago in the depths of winter cannot end on this autumn night.

"This victory alone is not the change we seek, it is only the chance for us to make that change. And that cannot happen if we go back to the way things were."

Although victory had been confirmed around 4am, the final margin was still in doubt several hours later.

With a couple of States still to declare, Obama had 349 electoral college votes to his rival's 162.

In the Senate, the Democrats were sitting with 54 seats to the Republicans' 40, and in the House of Representatives, the position was 251-172 in the Democrats' favour.

At last the American Citizens have shown the courage to allow a black president to fulfil 'The Dream' of Dr Martin Luther King! And to add that Mahatma Gandhi's response to the question, 'What do you think of Western Civilization?', He responded, 'I think it would be a great idea!'. At last we are hopefully beginning to see this idea in our lifetime.

I am feeling the positive vibrations of the wind of change from every direction!!!

I'm very happy. Obama seems like a clever guy who is different from the other politicans in the states.

I felt a wee bit sorry for McCain as he seemed a decent enough guy.

As I said last week, looks like McCain's had his chips.

After 45 years, MLK Jr's dream has finally become a reality

I wonder of he (Obama) will go on and rename the White House????

For those who may believe he might be a bad president, could he be any worse worse than the Family Butchers known as George Bush & Son?

Oh yeah, he who chanted "bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran". He's also a fraud who lied about his time in captivity. "The Songbird" was spared a lot of the brutal torture that many of his fellow POWs endured, despite the noise he made against torture, he supported Bush's torture bill, and he's also one of the leading supporters for the censorship of the internet. So much for being a decent man.

The Missing City:

Like all the other Presidential candidates, he is handpicked by the eiltes who own the banks, oil, arms, drugs, media, etc. and will be running the country on their behalf. He can't be any worse than the Bush/Cheney administration and I'm glad their days are finally numbered. :-)

And therein lies the problem! During the Cold War, UK and Western Europe were strategically important to the USA, and now that our new enemy lies in the Middle East, we are still in that position of strategic importance. So, someone please explain why WE are America's "lap-dog"? Shouldn't the British politicians of whatever party be "calling the shots"? I hope we see the dawn of a new era under Obama's leadership, but I won't hold my breath for too long!

congratulations to obama and wishing you all the best in this crazy world! i'm glad the american people have finally ended the bush jnr and republicans dictatorship in america and hopefully the global bullying will come to an end with obama administration.

i do however worry about for obama wellbeing since there are millions of american red necks (with middle names) will be plotting to assassinate him!

Beat me to it Skye.
Whilst I will congratualte Obama for winning, it seems to me that the race element is being overplayed, and possibly in the long run, to his detriment.
I think as much of these "tags" such as "African American" in the same light as a "British Pakistani" and "British Indian" etc.
You are American or not.
We are slightly different in that FOUR countries make up "Britain" (sadly).
If things take a turn for the worse it`ll be "what did you expect, he`s black" and other such comments.
I doubt we`ll have another woman in number 10 for a LONG time because of Thatcher.
I just hope the US doesn`t end up the same.
Anyway, the civil service, banks and big business REALLY run America, just as they do globally.
We can all only wait and hope.

I heard someone being interviewed at the Obama party in Chicago. He said it was good to have a President who did not read his speeches from an autocue machine - Obama is certainly eloquent but now he and his team have to set about the huge task of bringing America the prosperity and financial stability he has talked about in recent months. Let's hope he achieves something - we will suffer if he doesn't.

Well in a racist country like America, it is good to see an ethnic President being elected.

FOUR countries make up "Britain"

Which is all but another state of America.

the civil service, banks and big business REALLY run America, just as they do globally.

Exactly. It is they who run all the major parties both here and in the US as well as in most of the world.

I don’t want to split hairs but Obama is mixed race, he’s as white as he is black.

I do agree however that it’s a very positive decision on the Americans behalf though. He reminds me of Bill Clinton who despite his love of cigars and sex 'er I mean sax was and excellent President.

The last thing the world need was a man in charge (McCain) who admitted making bad decisions as a result of his temper, god help us.

Mmmmmmm, so kids that are BORN into poor families have no hope in America of bettering themselves?
Children all over the world SHOULD be educated as much as possible, and where possible it should be state funded.
Nothing wrong with paying some or all of the cost of higher education once you have your degrees and are earning a decent wage.
Phrases like "let the poor get poorer" are part of the reason the US is hated by half the world!!
Not much chance of a "new start" whilst this sort of attitude prevails.
Yeah, educate the kids, give them a chance, its not the kids fault their parents are skint losers. JUST DON`T ASK ME TO PAY FOR IT!!! Wonder how many millions of Americans sadly have the same attitude as you.

That's the point. Blacks in the US tend to vote Democrate so you can't say for sure the majority only voted for Obama because of his race.

Funnily enough it's been said Clinton was the first "black" president and that wasn't because he dressed will and played the sax.

That's the point. Blacks in the US tend to vote Democrate so you can't say for sure the majority only voted for Obama because of his race. Funnily enough it's been said Clinton was the first "black" president and that wasn't because he dressed will and played the sax.
Did you see the queues never seen so many blacks voting in my life, but anyway i hope he does what he says, and i think it was monica lewinsky who played with bills sax under a table if i remember correctly, perks of the job i suppose, wonder how many butlers/ maids the bold Obama will have,i should think none as that would be the pot calling the kettle

How can you possibly say no blacks voted for McCain. I know your trying to make a point but for every black person that voted for Obama because he's MIXED RACE, there will be someone who didn't vote for him for the same reason. I for one couldn't care less about US domestic issues, we have plenty of our own to sort. I just hope he brings more palatable foreign affair policies into opperation.

Your quite right on me mixing the two comments. It was the way Milly quoted on them that caught me out.

Please explain though how any (western) political party can remove your "individuality of thought".

Your are never going to agree with every policy desicion that either the party you support or not makes. You may have to obey the laws, you don't have to change your views. What's the solution? a referendom for every party edict.

I didn't and have never voted Labour, however I've still be subjected to 11 years of lies and spin. That's politics I'm afraid and it's still preferential to the dictatorships many people suffer under.

the easiest way to explain is the Hilary Clinton quote "it takes a village to raise a child". in other words you are part of the mass.

one of the most creative yet destructive ways of coralling people like sheep is provide them with enough incentives that they no longer need to think for themselves. classic example: welfare. hey!, don't worry about your housing costs, the government will get that for you. don't worry about working to forward yourself, the gov's got you covered. health care...Nah! Gov's going to socialize it. whenever you take away someone's responsability for themselves you reduce their need to be an individual to survive. it is weakening this country and you just saw the Dems put it into action with the 'I want my Mummy' general election....

Despite my previous comments, I actually thought McCain would have made a good President - He seemed dignified, knowledgeable, was clearly his own man and served and suffered for his country. Enter stage left, Palin. Who in their right mind would have risked McCain not lasting the term and this Looney being in charge or the world’s only super power? A creationist? A mentalist !!!

McCain might just have blown it with his choice of running mate.

i do agree with you on that one. Palin was definately the wrong choice. i like McCain because he has already shown that he can cross party lines and has the understanding of international affairs to at least begin to mend ties but not back down like i think Obama may do. unfortunately this election did not come down to policy. again, 'Change' is not a policy.

Missing City...one of the dumbest comments i've seen on here so far this morning.

a vast number of whites voted for Obama. the vast majority of blacks voted for Obama. i will put it to you that a far greater percentage of blacks refused to vote NcCain because he was white rather than whites did for Obama.

and what has LA got to do with anything?

No discrimination has ever taken place by the sounds of what Celtic 4 and Yankeebass are saying - possibly protecting white interests?? Hmmm

Of course it isn't healthy. However, with the state of many of these zombies, who is going to give them a job? Furthermore, it is a disgrace that benifits pay more than some jobs. ALL jobs should be better paid than any welfare handout. Also, don't forget how during the Thatcher years, after many people lost their jobs as shipyards, mines, steelworks etc. closed down and many of them couldn't find alternative work.

I read a piece the other day that put forward the view that the White House got it's name as it was a symbol of white supremacy during the slave trade. I don't know if there is any truth in it, but its not the first time someone has brought up the irony there. ;-)

Teddy Roosevelt first called it the White House in 1901 some 36 years after the slave trade was abolished.

It was painted White after we (the British) burnt it down (think we were just arsin about) so maybe it's simply called the White House because it's white

i've never heard that but i would think that it is because it is a big white house that it is called the Whitehouse.

is it getting to the point that everything that has white or black somewhere in the title is supposedly racist?....sucks for me if i live in Blackpool and support Blackburn Rovers....

by the way, John Adams who was the first president to inhabit the Whitehouse never owned slaves and hated slavery....you think he would have called it that with intention?

Teddy Roosevelt first called it the White House in 1901 some 36 years after the slave trade was abolished. It was painted White after we (the British) burnt it down (think we were just arsin about) so maybe it's simply called the White House because it's white
Something taken out of context by american white folks on here.

Sad!!

Well it did take a while for somebody to jump on that bandwagon and come out with a stupid comment like the one above. Let me assure you that if anybody is racist, it has to be those in America who did not want a president of Black Origin, if I were racist, why would I mention the good work Martin Luther King you knob? Louisiana anyone?????
I thought it was quite an amusing bit of satire. I bet the cartoonists are already pening something similar. Like it or not race has played a part (good or bad) in the election
Well it seems others have an extreme view and just talk garbage for the sake of trying to score a point or two. Yabass and Celtic 4 perhaps lovers? This was Yabass's comment and what has LA got to do with anything? That guy lives in America and even he doesn't know. Hilarious!! What was it now??? Hmmm, let me think, Oh was it only 5 or 6 counties in the whole state of Louisiana who voted for Obama, that being Orleans, Jefferson, Baton Rouge and a few others, not including other states in the south and mid-west?? No discrimination has ever taken place by the sounds of what Celtic 4 and Yankeebass are saying - possibly protecting white interests?? Hmmm Yes, even the papers tomorrow in America will probably be branded racists too for their satirical sketches - sad people out there, probably just jealousy more than anything else at something remarkable happening in Native Indian America! Thats the bit people like to forget - Even Celtic 4 and Yankeebass!
Missing City. you assume that because a state does not vote for Obama it is racist. what kind of backyard thinking brought you up? sounds to me like the only racist on these boards is you with the 'White House' comment. if you had half an ounce of sense you would know that LA (especially New Orleans and its 'parishes' (not counties)) are mostly black...remember the African American Mayor Nagin after Katrina "we will make New Orleans a chocolate City again'. i lived in New Orleans for two years so don't try and preach something you know nothing about. congressman Bobby Jindal is Indian and New Orleans has been run by black mayors for years. explain how Louisiana elects an Indian Congressman if it is a racist state? what's the phrase 'jack of all trades but master of none'? describes you perfectly....
And you are a total idiot, who's looking for an argument - you ain't getting one from me, white supremist!
aaaaawww...and there you have it...the response of the moron...you've been OWNED!

i've never heard that but i would think that it is because it is a big white house that it is called the Whitehouse. is it getting to the point that everything that has white or black somewhere in the title is supposedly racist?....sucks for me if i live in Blackpool and support Blackburn Rovers.... by the way, John Adams who was the first president to inhabit the Whitehouse never owned slaves and hated slavery....you think he would have called it that with intention?

Does the internet give people authority to be right? Is there a special licence for such powers of judgement or is it just self proclamation?

Come off it, you can't play that card. Okay the UK is racist but the US is sexist. When did they ever have a female president.

Thankful (and call me naive) we still elect people in this country based on merit and the policies.

let's wait and see what Obama brings to the table. as i said before if he can get the troops out in 16 months as he said he would without Iraq becoming a nightmare then i will begin to believe he can do a good job. it is very easy to say i will do this and that...what are the repercussions? are you okay with Iraqi's annihilating themselves if Obama is wrong. would it be enough for you just the troops leaving?

you made a racist comment and threw it away as satire.....fair enough... you are probably the same type of person that challenges disabled folks to 100 meter sprint races....
So people with disability cant run a hundred metres is that what you mean? by the very nature of your comment you are guilty of stereotyping and assuming that disability is somehow a reason for a cheap jibe!.Do you not watch the para-olympics in the u.s.a?sprinters with lower-limb amputations would give some able-bodied people a race easily,T.M.C has spoken up in the past for some of our "easy-target" groups in this sectarian divided city, you took a comment and decided it was racist when in fact it was nothing of the sort.

sounds to me like the only racist on these boards is you with the 'White House' comment.
I read a piece the other day that put forward the view that the White House got it's name as it was a symbol of white supremacy during the slave trade. I don't know if there is any truth in it, but its not the first time someone has brought up the irony there. ;-) As for the second coming, what "change" does he really have in store I wonder. :-? http://www.infowars. com/?p=5755
i've never heard that but i would think that it is because it is a big white house that it is called the Whitehouse. is it getting to the point that everything that has white or black somewhere in the title is supposedly racist?....sucks for me if i live in Blackpool and support Blackburn Rovers.... by the way, John Adams who was the first president to inhabit the Whitehouse never owned slaves and hated slavery....you think he would have called it that with intention?
who cares? You and Celtic4 took it to the extremes, as most Americans usually do with a tongue and cheek humour Almost as bad as those who run the dinosaur bbc If not american,. why live there?
because this is a great place to live with great people...don't believe that because GW is president that everybody is like him. i go back to Glasgow twice ayear, and while it is still home and i love the city and Scotland i would never move back....and i have met several people back home in Scotland that tell me they have been here and would like to move if they could. certainly there are distasteful elements here. but you know what i also hear that Scotland now has pushes continuing to rid Scotland of sectarianism (still) and racism...if those problems did not exist why would you need solutions for them? i'm not zipped up the back but it is just as bad back home in the UK as it is here...if not worse...we have just elected a black president. when did Scotland/England elect its first black prime minister?
Come off it, you can't play that card. Okay the UK is racist but the US is sexist. When did they ever have a female president. Thankful (and call me naive) we still elect people in this country based on merit and the policies.
huh? McCain had a woman as his VP choice. are you saying because he was not elected it was because sexist views did not want a woman pres if something were to happen to him....or would you rather stick to the racist arguement that people did not want Obama because he was black? which is it dude? make up your mind. i can't do that for you.
I was using a stupid analogy to highlight how stupid your comment was. ExPats are worse than born again christians or ex smokers, always preaching about there tremendous new life and how sad and downtrodden all us are still to be in the UK
wow....you must be a real hoot to be around. my comment was stupid yet yours was totally wrong and yet i'm still the bad guy. and thanks, yes, i do have a good new life but i still dig it in Scotland. you said downtrodden first. is that how you think of your homeland. must be really sad for you over there waking up every morning feeling that way. myself, i can't wait to get back every 6 months, check out Glasgow, meet the people/friends/relat ives, hit the pubs, walk down Buchanan Street and go see some football. you need to lighten up dude. it gets better if you just work at it.....
How was my comment wrong? I just told you I made a deliberatly stupid remark to highlight a point. Keep up doofus.

just showing you that your comments were, yet again, incorrect. care to answer the question. if Louisiana is racist why did they elect an Indian Congressman. waiting....waiting.. ..
The Oxford-educated Jindal had lost the governor's race five years ago to Gov. Kathleen Blanco. He won a congressional seat in conservative suburban New Orleans a year later but was widely believed to have his eye on the governor's mansion.

Blanco opted not to run for re-election in 2007 after she was widely blamed for the state's slow response to hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005.

But the two multimillionaires in the race at the time — Boasso, a state senator from St. Bernard Parish, and Georges, a New Orleans-area businessman — poured millions of their own dollars into their campaigns to try to prevent Jindal's victory.

Why did they try to prevent his victory?

Why did I mention other states earlier and you have just kept to Louisiana?

Hmmm - I smell a rat!

Well said.
let the poorer get poorer. it is not up to me to pay the way for some clown who has used the common sense they have been given to stay in school and get an education or learn a trade. live over here and see what kind of trash sits about on the stoop all day drinking 45's and smoking crack. thanks to Obama, me, and others like me will be funding them for at least the next four years (moreso than we already are). you are poor because you make poor decisions. get educated, find a job. if you can't afford to drink/smoke/play the lottery...then DON'T! if any of you are ever over this way i challenge you to walk into any 7-11 (convenience store) and see the people that do all of these past three things that i have just mentioned. don't be fooled.
yabass you live out there so I suppose you see more than the media gives us but surely everyone thats poor isnt a stoop sitting crack head.
Sure there are those who wont work or contribute to society but the majority of Americans are hard working decent folk who just happen to be poor regardless.
Point I was trying to get across was that nothing is gonna change no matter who is in the White House & thats a **** shame.
I also hear what your saying & yeah it would **** me off just as it does in this country, watching the wasters of society getting hand-outs while those that really need help are made to jump through hoops.
