[italic]The museum, which tells the story of Britain's oldest police force, has attracted 55,000 visitors in its seven years and this won a three-star award from tourism group VisitScotland.[/italic]
Oh Aye, historic status, world heritage site like most buildings over the past 50 years in historic Glasgow.....
"The building requires attention after years of neglect, so rather than rectify the faults and maintain it with only our museum as tenants, they have served us with a Notice of Removal.
Typical scenario which has gone on for many years.
Very sad.

I'm sure some space could be found in the new transport musuem for these exhibits!

Would'nt it be possible to put the museum back in the building once it was renovated, shouldn't that be part of the renovation package?

Unless it accidentally burns down whilst being renovated and needs to be replaced by a new, oh so trendy, glass and fake sandstone building. But that is the future.

Nah, I'm reckoning he's either 1) on one of those 12 week SAGA deals to the Costa Brava,or 2) he's in the jail for stalking Mr Purcell.

I wonder if Mr Dinsmore is aware that our ever wise City Council threw £1m of their own Heritage money into renovating the old Orkney Street Police Station and work is now well underway to convert it into some kind of "social "office rental property with all rental income going to their puppet landlord, Glasgow South Regeneration Agency, (formerly the Govan Initiative). Surely they could take on board such a worthy institution at a peppercorn rent.
After all, despite what you read in the papers, many Govanites[bold]bold[/bold] have no idea of the real history of the Police...Don't even see them on the streets...... All those tourists visiting the bustling, vibrant heart of Central Govan !!!
Bahsra-on Clyde! Go for it Stevie Baby!

It's a shame to see this museum close. It had a very intimate atmosphere and the curator was always friendly and helpful with any queries about exhibits. My own favorites were the decorated war heros from the Glasgow police and of course the timeline of the truncheon or nightstick used to beat the living daylights out of scum the world over.

It is based in the B-listed District Court No.1 buildings in St Andrew's Square, which celebrated its centenary in 2006....which will be a nice wee selling point for forthcoming, but as yet unannounced, conversi
on to flats like every other building in the street.
Perhaps the new generation of police officers should take the opportunity to see how much more effective and successful policing was despite the lack of technology and mandatory car allocation.

I can remember going there many years ago. Lots of home-made weapons from the 1930s - a length of scary-looking sharp blades used to tear the hair off animal skins with a handle at one end - you would not have wanted to see that being swung anywhere near you. Also a piece of someone's nose bitten off in a fight and preserved in a glass bottle!!!! Great stuff - I hope the collection is kept safe for display again soon.

I wonder just how many people even knew this place existed? In my view this should be a museum run by the city council as part of some other one not as a stand alone. Is the history of the police force such an interesting subject on its own?

An alternative premises could be the closed down Police office at Temple in Glasgow.
Situated on Bearsden Road it is a bit out of town but is accessed from the Clydeside Expressway via Crow Road.

Thanks for all the supporting comments.
The historical Turnbull Street building is the ideal home for the Glasgow Police Museum and we hope to achieve this in the future with a lot of hard work and the support of people like yourselves who are proud of our City and it's heritage.
Annie asks: [italic]Is the history of the police force such an interesting subject on its own?[/italic]
My answer is that the history of the Glasgow Police is impressive with many firsts, not least is that it was UK's first municipal police force (1800) 29 years before Peel's police ; first municipal police detective (1819) ; Supt. William Mackintosh (father of C.R. Mackintosh) ; First UK police bravery medal (1871) ; First Police Signal Box (1891) ; UKs First Police Dogs (1910) ; Scotland's only Policeman V.C. holder (John MacAulay 1917); black/white chequered cap band invented (1932); Stone of Destiny kept in Turnbull St. building for 2 nights (April 1951).
But it's all the stories that fill in between these events that makes its history interesting and are, in fact, a big part of the history of our City.
Thanks for all your support here and in the future.

Actually, I would find a police museum quite interesting, and am sorry it will get closed down before I get a chance to see it next year. But maybe it will have a new home by then. Hopefully.

Sadly another part of Glasgows heritage goes down swanny river. Get the display rehoused in the People's Palace. Its where it belongs with the rest of Glasgow's past. More people would have found it interesting if they could have found it in the first place!!!!
Excellent displays and truely part of our heritage. Don't leave it to rot.

You can be assured that the Glasgow Police Museum artefacts will not be stored away indefinately, if at all......we are determined to get new premises meantime and continue the fight to have the Turnbull St building renovated as an attraction for the City.
The Peoples' Palace, Art Galleries and Transport Museum are all fantastic museums, but they have many more items in store than they have on display, and cannot devote the space to collections like ours. In fact, we borrowed Police artefacts from Glasgow Museums that had not seen the light of day for many, many years!
Plenty of people know where our museum is (was) as we have had [bold]55,000[/bold] visitors since we opened in 2002.......9500 this year alone!
Advertising is too expensive for a free admission museum like ours but the museum is mentioned on all the websites checked out by people visiting the City or just looking for interesting places to visit. We also have our own website www.policemuseum.org
.uk.

old paddys market?some of the winos could give talks on when they helped to give info on all the criminals, then were rewarded with a hot cup of tea and a roll on bacon, and afterward shown the back door to carry on with the 'undercover' work.

Alastair,
I really feel for you in this. I am involved with another group trying to find somewhere for a colllection of items from Glasgow's engineering heyday, which the Glasgow city council musuems are not interested in. Some items are of course pretty large but they are all fascinating and there are lots more available to be rescued right now if only we had a location.
I wonder if you and the commenters above would find it worthwhile to work together on a museum of glasgow's work heritage. I can think of several old buildings looking for uses right now: Howdens factory building in Scotland street, the cinema at Bridgeton cross, the Fairfields building at Govan and the old Scotway house now isolated at the Yorkhill development site. Find us at http [colon slash slash ] clydeheritagetrust [dot] blogspot [dot] com
