EFFORTS are being made to bring a Slovakian police officer to work in Govanhill.

The idea is the brainchild of Shettleston MSP Frank McAveety and local councillor Anne Marie Millar who are concerned about relations with the large Roma community - many of whom are from Slovakia - that has moved into the area.

They invited Slovakian Consul Zuzana Zitna to the area and took her to some of its worst spots, including the area dubbed "Ground Zero" around Westmoreland Street.

Ms Zitna then went on to meet Chief Superintendent Robin Howe, the divisional commander for the area.

Mr McAveety said forging links with the Roma community, which is around 2000-strong, was proving difficult because of language and cultural barriers.

He said: "Normal points of reference such as family relationships, the churches, trade unions and sports clubs don't exist. We have to do more to connect with the community and someone who understands them would be of immense assistance."

Mr McAveety said he was aware of a growing hostility in the area - a point also made in a recent petition by Govanhill Housing Association. The association is also concerned about the relationship and interaction between slum landlords, agency gang masters and organised crime.

Mr McAveety said: "We would like an officer seconded from Slovakia to work with Strathclyde Police on some of the issues which crop up and we asked the Consul to consider the idea.

"Anything which can help us work with and manage the issues faced by the community would be helpful."

He said the visit by Ms Zitna had been "very helpful" in drawing attention to some of the problems.

As well as walking round the area, she also visited some people in their homes.

Mr McAveety added: "All of us are pulling together to try to improve the area and make life better for these people and establish good community relations.

"Anything the Embassy can do to help that will be much appreciated."

Ms Zitna, who is based at the Slovakian Embassy in London, wasn't available for comment.

Govanhill Housing Association chairwoman Janice McEwan said: "If a Slovak policeman came to work in Govanhill I think the existing partnership between the police, the Govanhill Law Centre, Govanhill Housing Association, other agencies in the area and the whole community would be significantly strengthened."

Communities Minister Stewart Maxwell, who has made several visits to the area, said: "It's not just desirable but also necessary that we have the right services in place.

"People have to be helped to understand what is appropriate.

"We are aware of the issues in Govanhill and are engaged in discussions with Glasgow City Council and GHA on how to tackle them."

Chief Superintendent Howe said talks had taken place about a liaison with a Slovakian police representative to help address any issues or problems involving the Govanhill communities.

The officer is likely to be based at the Slovakian embassy in London but will be available for discussions with Strathclyde officers.

Chief Superintended Howe added: "We look forward to meeting and developing relationships with the Slovakian Police officer who will be able to advise us on any problems that may arise."

This is what the Westminster government wants. Destabilisation and civil unrest. This type of social engineering has only one purpose to collapse communitiew and create unrest. Glasgow council and Glasgow Labour MP's should have been a bit more rebellious and questioning of their PM and government before allowing large migrations of foreign immigrantas to settle in a city already ravaged by social, religious and financial divisons.

Same old bloody story, -we say we can't afford to look after our own properly,- lowest pensions in Europe etc. -but here we go again - the bloody do-gooders want to bend over backwards to throw your money at Tom, Dick and bloody Zuzana!

Hope their more dishy than the Wegie cops - maybe we should Czech them out! LOL

On a more serious note, our lax Scottish mentality of dealing with crime has clearly not worked well - as why else to we have a "revolving door" scenario with our prisons.

People see prison as a soft option, and as for A.S.B.O's being a badge of honour - clearly it's not so much about how we police our crims - but what punishments we have in place to deter those if they are caught.

Introducing a "Boot Camp" or far stricter Community Service - where the work to repair vandalism etc instead of being put out to tender for private companies by the council, is repaired by the vandals who caused the damage.

Cheaper labour, and with guidance, training, and support - maybe this kind of punishment could see a trade learned in the process.

But, hey that would be far too sensible.

You could not make it up. I think that although Eastern European policing methods would be welcomed by most Glaswegians and indeed the police themselves, I doubt human rights and the liberal left will allow truncheon beatings, torture, and even 'disappearances' on those that would try to destabilise society.

Beware "brainchild" and McAveety" in close proximity. Disaster looms.

Do we send British cops to countries where there are British communities?

Wonder why not.

Has it not dawned on people like Frank McVoteforme and Anne Marie Milker that perhaps they have no intention and never did have any intention of integrating in the first place. The Roma community no matter what part of the world they are from or what part they are settling in at present have no intention of integrating. The above two PC muskateers believe it is language and culture, REALLY?, it han't stopped them begging, busking, selling the big issue, etc. In fact the community is well structured, you have heads of families whom we would call gang masters, who delegate who will beg, sell big issue, busk, work in factories etc, it is well organised and structured. The Slovakian Roma CHOOSE to only integrate when it suits, that is what these do gooders dont understand, and the people living in govanhell do. This is where the resentment comes in, people living in the area know whats really happening, I could type in more what is going on but I know my post will be removed, it is common knowledge what is going on, it is not racism, it is not anti Roma, it is fact, the problem is that the PC brigade who dont live in the community but only visitm or work for 7-8 hours per day in an office surrounded by PC directives have this ideal notion of a community who have came to Govanhill to integrate and become hard working citizens who contribute to the scottish economy and culture, but they are hampered by language, culture and at best people not allowing for this or at worst racist. All I can say is this notion is noble but totally fictitious. They only want to integrate when it suits, i.e. benefits, begging, big issue, etc.

Why is Glasgow on the receiving end of so many Roma?

Because our city councillors have let it be known that they will accept anyone in Glasgow and fix them up with all they need. Our councillors have allowed thousands of asylum seekers into Glasgow and refuse to assist our Home Office in the removal of those thousands who have no right to be here. Glasgow is a worldwide recognized dumping-ground. That’s why their transporters offload the Roma here. The Roma don’t choose to come to Glasgow - they are directed here, brought here. Glasgow is a soft touch. Govanhill is now Glasgow’s very own ghetto. Offload your undesirables onto Glasgow - no action will be taken.

And our councillors who welcomed them into Glasgow have absolutely no idea how many Roma are in Glasgow or Govanhill. 1,000? 2,000? 3,000? - who knows?

Appears that Glasgow will continue to be the dumping ground (courtesy of our councillors) for Scotland. Possible solution is to move the decent people out of Govanhill and dump our councillors and their thousands of asylum seekers and illegals in Govanhill. Create schools which are solely for the non-speaking, non-reading, non-writing children of immigrants. Create a ghetto for the immigrants and leave them to build some sort of community. House the numerous asylum seekers / Roma / migrants and assorted immigrants’ ‘‘charities’’ and their highly paid directors in Govanhill where they can live and work hands on with their poor wee immigrants.

Oh, and don’t forget to supply them with a Slovakian police officer, a ‘‘foreign cop’’, to keep them under control (lol)

newman, I would agree with you absolutely. These people are not interested in integrating at all. We've had several families and all bar one of them have actually been respectful of fellow residents and not caused any problems for the duration of their tenancy. For the most part language is not the problem - that's what they pull out the bag when they don't want to deal with you. The arrogance we've seen displayed by those who live and visit in our close is disgusting. I do resent them being here and I don't see what economic benefits for Glasgow they bring and what positive contribution they can make to Glasgow culturally or financially. The policeman is a novel idea, but nothing's gonna change. These people don't care what country/city they're in and the mess they leave behind. There's probably a healthy amount of financial fraud keeping them going as well as the begging and other crimes of dishonesty! Let the PC brigade share a close with some of them and see how long they last.

I may not have grasped the story properly but I thought the slovakian policeman was being brought over to here to assist our police officers in doing their duties. After all if our officers were to use their powers, I'm sure the "pc" brigade and lawyers would have a field day protecting their clients civil rights, (ie not understanding their rghts as they were being read to them) and yes I do live in govanhill.

You're in Scotland/England/whe
rever... abide by the laws of the country and none of your "cultural and language differences". Learn the bloody lingo, there's a start!!! While I'm at it, maybe we should have an African Police Officer for our area... cultural and language differences aplenty. We also have quite a large Iranian community who work their butts off... else we'd have no pizza or kebabs :o) At least they work! And talk about friendly.... I even learned a few words of their lingo... :o)

In my experience of African asylum seekers, ignorant, untidy, not friendly.

Thank you "fedup". Most of what you said actually equates to what we are going through with our African neighbours upstairs. We've had their crap thrown in our garden, had loud music played, banging and scraping... we banged up and the cheeky sods banged back down! Been onto the council, and apparently an officer from The Asylum Seekers Unit is going to visit them, as he/she speaks their language!!!! LEARN BLOODY ENGLISH OR BUGGER OFF!!!!!!

Glasgow is a soft touch for asylum seekers? Ours is only a wee town so the problem is even more obvious. I'm no racist, I get on with Indian, Chinese, Iranian.... but trouble makers are trouble makers regardless of their colour/creed/whateve

We have clearly defined laws.
We have officers charged with upholding those laws.

People coming from other countries to live in Glasgow should be given one warning that their behaviour id unacceptable. Then on a second occasion arrested (as appropriate).

Don't care if they speak English or not.
Lawbreakers should be policed without fear or favour.

As a last resort deportation should be an option.
Italy manages to deport EU citizens so there is no reason why we can't as well.
