Lights delight

GEORGE Square glittered as more than 17,500 festive revellers celebrated the annual Christmas lights switch-on - signalling the start of the holiday season.

The city centre was transformed last night into a winter wonderland as Christmas characters milled among the crowd.

And Real Radio's Cat Harvey and Robin Galloway joined stars from the Singing Kettle to keep crowds entertained until the big moment.

The weather was kind, staying crisp and dry, and the highlight of the night was the spectacular 15-minute fireworks display which exploded across the sky.

Although a technical glitch caused the crowd to miss the accompanying soundtrack, kids were transfixed by the multi-coloured pyrotechnics.

Competition winner Ethan Anderson, 10, and his four-year-old sister Lucy had the honour of flicking the light switch.

Mum Carolyn, 34, and dad Tommy, 38, joined the young pair on stage. The family were treated to a limo ride from their home in Shawlands to join Lord Provost Bob Winter and reality TV star Craig Chalmers.

Student Carolyn said: "We felt like celebrities, drinking champagne in the limo and the kids were over the moon.To win was utterly amazing. We're having a fantastic time."

Even without the star treatment, families had a fantastic night watching the Christmas tree light up.

The Holland family, with kids Sarah, 2, and four-year-old Samson, came through from Edinburgh. Mum Sarah said: "I know it's a bit disloyal but my kids love the fireworks here and they're big fans of the Singing Kettle so I brought them to Glasgow as a special treat.

"The night has been brilliant and the atmosphere is just fantastic. It's a special family night out."

The Lord Provost added: "Looking on thousands of smiling faces showed what a success the switch-on was.Glasgow people love celebrations and really know how to party.

In Paisley, meanwhile, X Factor winner Leon Jackson kicked off a street party for 20,000 revellers.

He performed a 20-minute set before helping Renfrewshire Provost Celia Lawson turn on the lights.

A sea of people filled High street where a stage had been erected at the Town Hall where the singer performed three songs and ignited a giant fireworks display.

Ten lucky Evening Times readers were the last to get tickets for the event after they won a contest. They were Lisa McLaughlin, Rutherglen; Brian Riley, Drumoyne; Esther Dooey, Muirhead; Julie Boyd, Thornliebank; Patricia Pearce, Blantyre; Catherine Kerr, Lambhill; Jacquie Johnstone; Catherine Kerr; Pauline Young and Ashley Cunningham, all Glasgow.

I wonder if a bit of chewing gum was the cause of the technical glitch...

We are constantly told to turn our telly's off properly, and not to waste electricity.

So how can this be justified?

I passed by this morning on the bus.

Remember when George Square used to be a really nice civic suare with raised beds and trees and benches? And now it's a tarmac-ed mess that gets used for ice-rinks and crap acts at hogmanay...

A few lights? Well, as I said last week in a different context: ye cannae polish a turd.

Ach stop yer whinging! As long as the kids enjoy it then thats all that matters!

Have to say though as much as I like the lights, it's the same ones every year! I remember those bells and holly from when I was a child! Maybe time for GCC to buy some new ones!?

I remember that after unveiling the "new-look" George Square in 2005 the Council solicited local architects to propose designs for a cafe and pavilion on the open West side.

In addition to their cafe designs, each of the six finalists proposed either a partial or complete re-design of the Square to undo the mess the Council had made.

The cafe scheme was torpedoed by the Council soon after.

Reality will soon kick in - this will be the worst Xmas trading period as the country lurches into recession.Gone are the days of enjoying Xmas.

The true modern meaning of Christmas - conspicuous consumerism, greed, and gluttony. I don't think tacky lights are necessary for Christians to enjoy Christmas as it should be...in quite contemplation in remembrance of the birth of Jesus Christ.

Dare I ask if there is a Nativity scene in George Square, as there used to be when we were considered a Christian country?

buy new ones??? and what, waste even more money the city hasn't got! We all know that three quarters of the city is falling apart, due to abuse, littering, no sense of social repsonsibility, but lets spend a few hundred grand on buying some new lights, onto top of the already huge lecy and servicing bill!!

There was one for several years but this was withdrawn after baby Jesus was stolen.

None of the 3 wise men offered any evidence - could have been an inside job.

once again Glasgow does it again with a spectacular display of the lights and fireworks, the only disapointment was the stewarding and arrangements for the entry to the event, disgracful that coming from the west of the city centre,we had to travel to east side to gain entry.shocking GCC.

How shocking for you to have to walk the entire length of George square. Maybe next year we should supply golf carts to wheel those from the West end the 100 yards to the entrance.
