40% see kids like ‘animals’

Almost half of Scots believe children are dangerous and behave like animals, a survey out today reveals.

Children's charity Barnardo's Scotland said the results showed a "disturbing" intolerance of youngsters.

The poll of 2021 adults across the UK found that 42% of Scots believed children were beginning to behave like animals, while 41% said children were increasingly dangerous both to each other and to adults.

Barnardo's said the attitudes contradict a Victim Support Scotland survey study which has said that less than 1.5% of youngsters commit crime.

The new poll also shows that young people were more likely to be victims of personal crime compared to their elders.

Martin Crewe, director of Barnardo's Scotland, said: "The fact that just under half of Scots refer to children as feral' means we still need to change public perception and recognise that most young people aren't unruly and criminal.

"Most make a positive contribution to society.

"This attitude does nothing to help those youngsters who are difficult, unruly or badly be-haved, change their ways."

Alongside its survey, Barnardo's launched a report which said children who engaged in illegal and antisocial behaviour were those in most need of support.

The report said children who become involved in crime come from the most deprived families, have the poorest educational experiences and are more likely to suffer from poor health.

Barnardo's aims to tackle negative perceptions of children with its first major TV advertisement to air on next Monday, November 24.

What a load of absolute c**p - if this "survey" is typical of the way Barnardo's spend public donations then perhaps serious questions require to be asked by the Charity Commission and teh many Scots who support their work, either by direct giving or by donating items to their shops.

I dont believe the public has to 'change its perception'. Children have to change their behaviour.

Yes, I know its not all children, but these groups need to accept that it is MANY children.

Children need to be taught more about living in the real world - about failure as well as success, about disappointment as well as pleasure - they need to be prepared to take responsibility for their actions - not be pandered to, sheltered from everything, and taught all about their 'rights'.

I wouldnt describe children as animals, because I like animals, and have never seen any behave in such a horrible way as some of the children roaming around where I live.

Again we see Barnardos being used has a Trojan horse by political groups like Common Purpose. Barnardos is not fit for purpose. They are not helping with misguided rubbish like this survey.

"A poll of 2021 adults across the UK..." Is anyone else sick of groups using small scale surveys to create spurious findings to highlight their own cause. I'd like to see the questions asked, to see if they used the words "animal" or "feral" in the questions, or whether over 800 people used the terminology completely unprompted. Seems unlikely to me.

Is this a case of Barnardos actually using stigmatising terms to 'highlight' the stigmatisation of children? Curious.

Did no-one read the article about the 14 year old boy trying to rob 5 men and indecently assaulting a 38 year oold woman at knifepoint..... obviously we are all wrong to think the kids are out of control?!

Social services but out; let the parents discipline thier kids; I don't mean batter your kids thats wrong but I got the belt as a kid and I've no criminal record. Police officers arrest them, do the paperwork and lock them up. Prison officers get rid of the 'cushy' 'easy time' make prison harsh; thats the biggest deterant we have. Head techers; give the children detention after school hours; so it eats into their social life; that put me off skipping classes.

We also need to have more activity centres for kids and teenagers though; other than thier playstations at home what else have they to do but roam the streets. Councils need to provide them with somewhere to socialise without reverting to mis-behaviour.

Simple steps and a difference will be seen.

But that doesn't mean that half of kids are "animals".

Agree with the rest though. Shouldn't be rocket science, just about instilling self-discipline through parenting and activities and - if that fails - perhaps other types of discipline are required.

But this "animals" thing - just daft.

'Almost half Scots asked believed children act like animals' -Should this not have read -'SOME children act like animals?' If so, nobody with half a brain could dispute it, given the almost daily media evidence!

I'm also sick of it Pete. Asking just over 2000 people across the entire UK is hardly a representative sample of then UK population. Given the size of the Scottish population in relation to that south of the Bordcer, I wonder how many Scots were actually included. Yet the charity claims that
ust under half of Scots refer to children as feral
.

And I'm pretty sure that the words "feral" and "animlas" did not come from the mouths of the respondents without any prompting.

'spare the rod and spoil the child'...... the meaning behind this age old adage is, if you do not rule children with positive discipline you will end up with a spoiled child,....boy is that ever true.

Regardless of the answer, it's sad that the question is even asked.

I'm surprised it was only 40% of adult Scots that felt this way. Having witnessed countless instances of teenage neds blighting our city with their mindless vandalism, ridiculous alcohol abuse and wanton abuse of anything and everything, I whole-heartedly agree with those who consider them "feral" and "animals". The problem could be easily solved by introducing clearly identifiable chain gangs of teenagers who are caught. They might treat ASBOs like a badge of honour, but I doubt they'd be quite as proud of spending a few weeks scraping up the sh*te from our city streets.

Just remember that is us adults that made kids the way they are.
