Shamed Baby P council leaders quit

Two leading figures on the shamed Haringey Council quit today over the Baby P scandal.

Council leader George Meehan and cabinet member for children and young people Liz Santry have resigned in the wake of a damning report into failings exposed by the tragedy.

The Children's Secretary Ed Balls ordered an urgent review of welfare services at the north London authority after the little boy was killed while on the child protection register.

Inspectors handed him a first report this morning and he made a statement about their initial findings this afternoon.

Local Liberal Democrat MP Lynne Featherstone suggested the report would reveal a "litany of failures" and lead to the resignation of Haringey's head of children services, Sharon Shoesmith.

Pressure is mounting on Mrs Shoesmith to quit over her department's handling of the Baby P case.

At the end of the trial of those responsible last month, she avoided saying sorry for the tragedy.

Asked if she would apologise to the child's natural father, she said only: "I am responsible to see that the services that I head up work to the best of their ability together with partners to protect children."

Mrs Shoesmith had also insisted there was no evidence requiring anyone to resign or be sacked over their involvement in the case.

The infant, who can't be named for legal reasons, was 17 months old when he died in a blood-splattered cot in August last year.

He had suffered more than 50 injuries at the hands of his abusive mother, 27, her boyfriend, 32, and their lodger, Jason Owen, 36, despite 60 contacts with the authorities.

the failure in this case caused the death of this child, this comes under the heading of murder in the highest degree, thank god these useless council workers have quit...they should never be allowed to work in this capacity again, be it with children and the elderly and other vulnerable people.

Somehow, I get the strange feeling that once the dust has settled, these same social workers will mysteriously find the same type of job in another council's social work department. Ed, live up to your name, and have the "balls" to ensure that you prove me wide of the mark!

A lovley little boy too, what a tragedy. He should have been looking forward to tearing open Christmas presents instead of what he got from those monsters!! I can't pretend to even imagine what suffering he went through.

Not before bloody time. Everyone involved in this case should be sacked.

Has anyone really "resigned" or have they all just stepped down a rung until this all blows over? They should just be sacked and that's that.

Agree with the above comments - they'll be merely staying out of the firing line till all the fuss dies down. Come on Mr Balls (how apt a name for him!) and show you really mean business.

I believe this little boy's home was visited on no less than 60 occasions before his death. What evidence does she want?.. I think if she looks closely at her hands, she will see that they are stained with this wee fella's blood, metaphorically speaking!

I've an awful feeling that nobody in Harringey actualy deserves sacked for incompetence, but rather, this poor baby has been the victim of systemic 'political correctness'. They've probably been afraid to take baby into care bacause of legal ramifications, and not been able to do what they felt was right. -It's probably not the people that should be binned, -it's the system they have to work with!

sack them....they had every opportunity to protect this child, never mind this bull about politicaly correctness(it is not correct all the time, ....take photos, tell relatives of your concern, do something,if you get fired for 'overstepping' your position so be it ,at least you would have a clear concience knowing at least you lot tried to save a defenceless baby.
