WORK to build a £130million viaduct over the M8 at Paisley for the Glasgow Airport rail link will begin in 2010, it was confirmed today.

Seven companies will compete for the right to construct the St James Spur, one of four new bridges earmarked for the new route.

The viaduct, which will span the St James Playing Fields in Paisley before crossing the motorway, is the biggest piece of infrastructure for the long-awaited £210million link.

Around one mile of extra track will be laid to allow the link to merge into the main Glasgow-to-Paisley line.

The link will be similar to those at Manchester, Heathrow and Stansted, in that journeys terminate right at the airport.

A new airport station will be built south of the multi-storey car park and will feature a moving walkway connection to the air hub.

Both the new station's platforms will be built 30ft from ground level and will be located close to the airport's Terminal 1.

Transport Minister Stewart Stevenson today announced that BMV, a joint venture between Balfour Beatty, Morgan and Vinci, have bid for the lucrative viaduct contract, along with Carillion, Morrison Construction and Roadbridge/Sisk.

During peak times four trains will run every hour between the city and the airport. Each journey will take 16 minutes with just one stop, at Paisley Gilmour Street.

The rail link is set to be operational in early 2013, well in advance of the Commonwealth Games the next year.

Backers predict that setting up the new route will create around 650 jobs in Glasgow and Renfrewshire over the next 10 years, and 700 jobs in Paisley town centre by 2015.

Mr Stevenson said: "I am particularly pleased that seven major construction companies, either individually or in a consortium, are lining up to bid for this flagship public transport project in the West of Scotland.

"We are committed to delivering the project as efficiently as possible and have listened to the construction industry in order to take the necessary steps to protect the public purse."

Platforms at Central station are to be renumbered over the New Year as part of the project.

All high-level services at Central will be suspended from Boxing Day until December 30, during which time platform 11a will become platform 12, 12 will become 14, and 13 will become 15.

A new platform 13 will be built to accommodate the airport link.

First Scotrail would like to apologise for the late running of this train. This was due to a football on the line.

Where did this completion date of 2013 suddenly creep in? I recall it being 2011 not that long ago. Can't see them blaming that one on the wrong type of snow........

Not a "high-speed" rail-link then??

Hope the trains have reinforced windows, being above the footie pitches = a moving target to hit with balls

I still can't figure why they didn't reinstate the old Babcocks engineering line that runs from Arkelston Junction and alongside the airport at Inchinnan Road ?

On a positive note, I suppose those of us regulars at Paisley Gilmour Street will have an extra service into Glasgow, I wonder if it will attract a premium fare though ?

A thought it was 2010,are they waiting to see which one gets sold????????

Even when it does start it will overun the completion date and it will be over budget, plus passenger numbers will be dramatically reduced due to economic and environmental reasons.

Wouldn't be surprised.

passenger numbers will be dramatically reduced
Not so sure, and anyway, a lot of the GARL project is about improving capacity between Paisley and Glasgow, which will be very useful on top of the actual airport link.

Must we condem this link to the airport, look
at the benefits. It has been passed lets hope all goes well.

It is never to late to be progressive with public transport. The Scottish and British people are so backward when it comes to progress unlike the French where public transport is a major voting issue. The Glaswegians moaned a bit when the trams were taken away. The people of Edinburgh are moanin because the tram building will disrupt their poor wee lives. What a bunch of no hopers.

Is this the same MORGAN(ASHURST) who is doing away with over 81 jobs on their construction side at Faslane naval base? double standards if you ask me.

This is a great opportunity for Glasgow to do what only ten other cities around the world have done, build a dedicated airport express. Brand, price and service levels will all be important considerations in attracting customers. Best of luck.

The "Babcocks engineering line" is on the wrong side of the Cart. Plus, housing has been built on the route of the line at the northern side of Porterfield Road...

Forget the euphoria.. This link is not expected to punch it's weight financially. One must wonder why the Edinburgh Airport Link which was expected to, has mysteriously been knocked-back by the SNP.

This significant investment will pay dividends for the airport, Glasgow and Scotland for many years to come.

The Edinburgh Airport Link was scrapped for that exact reason Foxy - it won't punch its weight financially (costing £600Million+). Good financial prudance shown by the SNP in scrapping it if you ask me!

Not what the experts were saying. You must remember that the Edinburgh Airport Rail Link was an ALL Scotland
transport scheme serving
both Scotland and the UK. The Glasgow Airport scheme will start at Glasgow Central and finish at the Abbotsinch buffers. A White taxpayer Elephant...
It might be a scheme for Glasgow but it certainly isn't one for Scotland.
The current buses and taxis into town would suffice.

Erm... you OBVIOUSLY dont use the M8 between GLA and the city centre at rush hour... or any other time of the day!?

Furthermore, if the proposed replacement for Crossrail goes ahead, then yes, via Central station, the link will be conected to the rest of Scotland and northern England... which is a great thing as the airline I work for carries a LOT of passengers from the north of England fed up with Manchester and the southern airports rip-off prices from Glasgow!!

So, appart from the over drawn out timescale, it's a win-win situation!

"So, appart from the over drawn out timescale, it's a win-win situation!"

Not for East Coast Scotland it isn't..It would be yet another political fix to socially engineer air travellers to an airport
away from the current popular choice in Edinburgh..A popular choice that doesn't have a direct rail link or direct Motorway access.

The completion was deliberately pushed back so that the project could be tied in with Network's Rail's planned resignalling of the line between Glasgow and Paisley.
