Cash boost for 19,000 city gym users after VAT ruling

by Caroline Wilson

GYM users have been given a health and cash boost after a landmark VAT ruling.

The 19,000 members of the Glasgow Club, the gym and fitness package run by Culture and Sport Glasgow, will no longer have to stump up extra fees for non-core activities, such as health suites and saunas.

Leisure trusts in North and South Lanarkshire Council have also lifted the additional health suite payments.

The u-turn follows an earlier ruling by HM Revenue and Customs in 2007 that sporting activities provided by not for profit organisations such as Culture and Sport were exempt from VAT but health suites were not.

The good news for fitness fans - which will also apply to other leisure clubs run by councils and trusts - is the result of a lengthy legal battle between sports bosses and HMRC.

Glasgow Club holders have been sent a letter explaining they will no longer be liable for the health suite payments.

The extra charges amounted to £1 for each visit or around £4.20 a month for a separate health suite membership on top of their yearly membership of £357.

Annual paying members who have paid in advance for the non-core activities will be given the equivalent in days, added to their membership.

In a further boost for gym users Culture and Sport Glasgow has also frozen membership fees this year.

The Glasgow Club is Scotland's largest health and leisure club, with more than 20 facilities available across the city for members to use.

Liz Cameron, Culture and Sport Glasgow chairwoman, said: "This is great news for all 19,000 members of the Glasgow Club, who will again benefit from having unlimited health suite use as part of their membership at no extra charge."

Glasgow Culture and Sport has also introduced a range of new services for pass holders, including online booking for classes and free five-day trials for friends of membership holders.

The Evening Times is also helping readers fight the flab and get fit with some fantastic giveaways.

The countdown to the Glasgow Women's 10k gets under way tomorrow and we will publish all you need to know about the race.

Readers will be offered a free Scottish Slimmers membership and recipe book on Friday. In Saturday's paper we will be giving away passes for top leisure club Esporta.

Surely given the cities unenviable health record the £357 yearly membership should be per household. This would encourage more people to join and maybe give folks the access they might not otherwise be able to afford. Would also remove an excuse from lazy spouses.

Either way it's still pretty expensive for a membership. This is the kind of thing that should be subsidised; the health of Glasgow's residents is atrocious. Saying that, you can lead a horse to water...

The Glasgow Club is pretty good and offers much better value for money - and better exercise equipment - than even most of the more expensive private gyms. The fact you can use all their centres gives it a flexibility, too. Private gyms typically cost upwards of £600/yr with joining fees and no contract get-outs.

It's a bit disingenous to say that they are freezing prices, however. Many fitness classes have been reduced from 1 hour to 45 minutes and the price has remained the same. Of course this is the Evening Times so anything other than regurgitating the press release is asking a bit much.

Plus being the cooncil they do have a tendency to take rather long holidays. Overall, however, it's a rare example of something the council did well, though. It's also nice to see a bit of public support for something which is aimed at people who wish to improve themselves rather than the undeserving poor.

It is subsidised. Its not for profit.

But I do think it should be a family membership and this would attract more.

It's attracting more than enough as it is, especially in January. You can't get near a machine at peak times for tubs of lard walking at 2.5mph on a treadmill.

Maybe gyms should only be open to fit people? not those trying to get fit? Would that suit you stmonan. Ive been into fitness for years and gladly encourage newcomers but some people are gym posers.

My daughter lives in a highrise and 2 gyms and 3 swimming pools are included in the rent.

Why cant we comment on the labour activist who resigned from GHA for fraudulently claiming housing benefit for over 14 years.
This guy was getting poor folk evicted from their GHA houses for not paying rent.
The ET better step up a gear or it will go down the tubes like the herald.

I assume you have never read the ET before - Labour corruption in Glasgow is not a thread that they are going to pull in case it unravels their mutually beneficial relationship.
