THE shelves of a charity that delivers emergency food parcels are now full thanks to the efforts of Glasgow commuters.

Glasgow City Mission says a 12-hour foodbank organised by Network Rail at Central Station collected enough bags of groceries to feed desperate families for six months.

Rail bosses took action after learning that the charity had all but run out of stocks of food due to a surge in demand for the service.

From 7am to 7pm on Thursday, staff collected donations from passengers and office workers who had made a detour to support the drive.

Virgin Rail and Lidl were among the companies which donated food.

Grant Campbell, chief executive, of Glasgow City Mission, said: "We are going from empty shelves to a supply that could last six months."

Meanwhile, a food bank set up in the South West of Glasgow has been able to improve its storage facilities thanks to a donation.

Property management company Ross & Liddell has donated funding from its Community Bursary Programme to SW Glasgow Food Bank, which has bases in Ibrox, Cardonald and Pollok.

Since its launch in late 2013, the service has seen an increase in the number of people visiting, especially in the last few weeks where numbers have risen.

With more and more people requiring its services, the bank has purchased lockable shelving to ensure the food is stored safely.

David Barr, assistant minister at Ibrox Parish Church, thanked Ross & Liddell for its support.

He said: "The Food Bank has really taken off and we are seeing a high number of people visiting all three sites each week.

"We have fantastic support for the local community, with donations being made all the time, so we need to ensure we are storing the food in the correct way.

"The funding from Ross & Liddell has been invaluable and the lockable shelving is a massive improvement.

"Food Banks have become a necessary service for people and we are grateful to everyone who volunteers and supports the service."

The Bursary Programme is now in its third year and was launched to provide support to organisations that make a vital difference in their community.

The initiative has attracted applications from a wide range of community groups and charities across the country.
