A WITNESS in the Elaine Doyle murder trial appeared visibly shocked after hearing his former prison pal had accused him of murdering the teenager more than 27 years ago.

Robert Brown, 47, then asked to be allowed to leave the witness box when he also discovered his accuser, Brian Buckley, was serving a life sentence for murder.

Buckley was convicted of sexually assaulting and strangling a 25-year-old mum of two in Wrexham, Wales - a case that defence QC Donald Findlay claimed bore some similarities to Elaine's murder.

Elaine's naked body was found yards from her home in Ardgowan Street, Greenock, on the morning of June 2, 1986.

Mr Brown told Mr Findlay he had no idea Buckley had accused him of the murder in 2008 following a TV programme about unsolved killings.

He added he had no idea Buckley was serving a life sentence for murder until Mr Findlay told him in court.

Judge Lord Stewart granted him a break and his evidence will resume today.

On trial is John Docherty, from Dunoon, who denies Elaine's murder. The 49-year-old claims the culprit might be among a list of 41 names taken from files of the police investigation into the murder. Buckley, who was 17 at the time, is one of the names on the list.
