A MOTORIST stopped on one of Glasgow's busiest roads was FIVE TIMES over the drink-drive limit.

Police pulled over the man in Alexandra Parade, Dennistoun, at the weekend.

He was arrested after being breathalysed by officers, who found him to be five times over the limit.

His alcohol reading is understood to be one of the highest recorded in Scotland since the introduction of strict new limits in December.

A police statement read: "A man was arrested for drunk driving on Alexandra Parade - fives times over limit.

"Don't risk lives by drink driving."

Research has found that a single pint of beer or glass of wine could now be enough to put someone over the drink-drive limit, which was reduced from 80mg of alcohol to 50mg in every 100ml of blood.

However, the way in which a person processes alcohol varies according to the individual - and a range of circumstances.

A mass public-awareness campaign, including radio adverts and social media messages, has been under way in Scotland for the past few weeks.

The campaign's dedicated website warns: "The likelihood of being caught is now greater than ever before.

"It's estimated that Police Scotland stop over 80,000 vehicles each month, with around 20,000 offences detected every month."

Scots caught drink-driving face maximum penalties of six months in prison, a driving ban of at least a year and a fine of up to £5000.

The same applies to anyone who refuses to give a specimen of breath, blood or urine for analysis.

Campaigners welcomed the reduction.

Dr Evelyn Gillan, chief executive of Alcohol Focus Scotland, said: "The best approach is not to drink any alcohol at all if you intend to get behind the wheel."
