A DRIVER who had a diabetic seizure while driving killed a former hospital worker in the resulting crash.

Brian Docherty's car ran into Elizabeth McGuiness, 63, and her friend Barbara McCready, 64, as they left church in Motherwell in June 2011.

A court heard the 45-year-old should not have been driving, having failed to tell the DVLA of his type-2 diabetes and that he had a poor history of taking medication.

At the High Court in Glasgow, Docherty admitted causing the death of Miss McGuiness by dangerous driving and leaving Mrs McCready severely injured.

The court heard that tragedy struck Miss McGuiness and Mrs McCready on June 27, last year as the two walked towards a cafe.

The court saw CCTV film of the incident in which the accused drove in the town's Muir Street before stopping and "having some sort of fit".

Despite this, Docherty's car then accelerated, causing other vehicles to swerve, and careered into a parked car before mounting the pavement and colliding with the women.

Miss McGuiness was dragged under the wheels. Mrs McCready was thrown in the air. The car driven by Docherty, of Uddingston, Lanarkshire, stopped as it hit railings.

Miss McGuiness, who worked as a support worker for North Lanarkshire Council, was pronounced dead at the scene, while Mrs McCready suffered multiple fractures.

The court heard that it appeared Docherty suffered a hypoglycemic attack. He was remanded until sentence next month.
