DRIVERS in Glasgow's West End have been warned to expect delays during a £13million uni-versity revamp.

Work will get under way this week to renovate the University of Glasgow's Sports and Recreation service in Oakfield Avenue.

The university is also carrying out improve-ments to Glasgow University Union on the corner of University Avenue, Kelvin Way and Gibson Street.

The first stage of the works will involve the demolition of the existing GUU extension or 'Hive' building.

There will be partial road closures during the works and the first stage will last approximately nine weeks.

The university said work would be carried out between 8am and 4.30pm to minimise disruption.

Pavements in Kelvin Way and Gibson Street will be closed off during the first week of work.

A university spokes-man said: "The demolition contractors, Reigart, will do all that they can to keep disrup-tion to a minimum, with the work taking place between 8am and 4.30pm.

"There will be partial road closures at stages during the works and inevitably there will be some works traffic and additional noise during at least part of this period.

"During the first two weeks of the project most of the activity will take place inside the building as the interior is stripped out.

"A safety exclusion zone will be set up around the site during the first week.

"It is likely that during this period the adjacent pavements on Kelvin Way and Gibson Street will be closed off."

The university said local residents had been kept informed and apologised for any inconvenience caused.

Benefits of the new venue will include more social space for members and improved sports facilities.
