Drivers are being asked to carry out simple checks on brakes, lights, tyres and windscreen wipers before setting off, as part of the Get Ready for Winter campaign.
Inspector David Carballo, from Divisional Road Policing Unit, said: "It really only does take a few minutes each time.
"And once you get into the habit of doing it regularly, the easier it becomes.
"If you do these checks, not only could you save pounds in the long run, but more importantly it could save your life or that of a loved one.
"If you took a taxi or a bus, you would expect all these checks to have been done - so why not in your own vehicle?"
Police have created a five-minute video, which has been posted on their social media pages, to show motorists what essential checks should be carried out.
Inspector Carballo added: "Social media is an excellent medium to get messages across and we thought this would be the best way to show people just how easy it is to check your vehicle.
"By following the basic tips, you can keep yourself safe on the road. Always have an alternative route should your normal route be blocked, charge your mobile and keep it handy should you need it."
Inspector Carballo warned cyclists to also take extra care by wearing fluorescent and reflective clothing.
