Another motorist who stopped to help an elderly woman involved in a car crash has died.

The 39-year-old was one of two men who raced to the aid of a woman on a busy dual carriageway in Renfrewshire. Police said he died from his injuries on Saturday. His name was not released at the request of his family.

The man was treated at Glasgow’s Southern General Hospital after the crash on Sunday January 31.

Thomas Rarity, 47, from Bathgate, West Lothian, died instantly after being hit by a van after he stopped to help the pensioner.

The 39-year-old motorist was also struck by the van after stopping his car.

The horrific accident happened at around 8.20pm on the busy A737 near Linwood, Renfrewshire.

The 71-year-old woman’s Volkswagen Polo was travelling east at Linclive Spur when it was in a collision with a Seat Leon being driven by a woman aged 25.

The two men stopped so they could help but they were hit, along with the OAP’s car, by the Vauxhall Combo van being driven by a 48-year-old man.

Emergency services rushed to the scene but Mr Rarity died instantly.

The 39-year-old man was taken to the Southern General, where he was treated for head and leg injuries.

The elderly woman was taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley, where she is being treated for a shoulder injury.

The Seat Leon driver was uninjured but was left badly shaken by the incident.

A full report on the circumstances surrounding the crash has been forwarded to the procurator fiscal.
